Funny but the KC Chiefs game didn't sting me nearly as bad as the Buff game. The way I saw it, we were at 100% fault for even daring to have the gall to give Montana a chance to come back. We did it, and he did what he did his whole career, washed up or not. Montana was incredible and he showed it one last time. The Den game (Stagger Lee) hurt because of horrid coaching decisions. Same for the Buff game. As TheFreak said, Prevent Defense FTW! Ughh!! Grrr!!!! Other stinging moments were seeing Earl in a Saints uni. Bum, too. Although they were well into their swan songs, it hurt seeing HTown legends wearing anything other than Columbia Blue or a 12gallon hat. Hakeem in Dino-gear didn't hurt because it was what he truly desired anyway, to play in Canada at the end of his career. I was ok with the Dream fulfilling his own dream. That said, if he ever played for Utah, which was close to happening, I think my head would've literally exploded, Dave Chappelle/Clayton Bigsby skit style.
The 1991 AFC Divisional Playoffs was not the Stagger Lee game. The Stagger Lee game was in the 1987 AFC Divisional Playoffs. The 1991 playoff game included Elway's scramble on fourth and ten and Vance Jackson's approx. 50 yard catch down the sideline.
richard johnson took a couple of steps up, biting on elway running...and elway pulled back and lofted it over his head to vance. aside from frank reich, those playoff losses came at the hands of two of the greatest QB's to ever play the game.
Oilers vs Bills : 35-3 nuff said Oilers choking at home to the Chiefs the next season (last playoff game in Houston Jan 94 15 freakin years ago!!!!) Rockets losing to Utah in 07. Get past Utah and we would have had G.S. in the 2nd rd. Would have beat them in 5 IMO Astros 98 bats go silent vs Padres Astros 99 Walt Weiss and Kevin Milwood Astors 2004 Edmonds hits a walkoff in game 6 and then Robs Ausmus of a 2-run double in game 7. Rolen puts the game on ice with a homer off of Roid Clemens Astros 2005- Scott Podsednik 0 homers in regular season but hits a walkoff on Lidge to win game 1. Still not over that one.
The OP said that the Buffalo game and the Pujols-making-Lidge-his son game were obviously the two initial picks for most people. I think the loss to KC was the culmination of all of the disappointments of the Oilers and probably is the reason they left town. Blowing a 10 point lead at home in the 4th quarter after all of the drama of that year was excruciating. The Buffalo choke was just too unbelievable at the time to get that upset over. It was like watching the Hindenburg.
This. I remember staring at the TV speechless for like 15 minutes after that shot. Especially after coming off that Eddie Johnson shot the previous (I think?) game.
One year the Oilers finished 10-4 and only lost to two teams the entire year....Pitts and Cincy...who finished above them in the standings. That year sucked......no playoffs and only losing to two teams. YIKES !! DD
Game 1 of the 2001 Division Series against the Braves when Wagner gave up the homer to Chipper Jones, ugh. That was a crusher.
I was 8 years old and attended almost every game that season (infact almost every game since I was 4). I cried when Stockton made that shot, I just couldn't believe it.
AHHHH...the Julio Lugo game, he made two critical errors in that game that would have made the ending of that game and probably series a completely different outcome.
I think that UH v UTEP game deserves a little mention now. That will rest among the pantheon of legendary Houston sports choke jobs.
I think so. It pissed me off during the game because NBC kept running promos for Utah vs. Bulls Game 1 with a (or Game 7 of this series) at the bottom.
I remember how NBC use to jock the Bulls 24/7. Pretty much the way TNT, ESPN, and ABC jocks the Lakers now.
Game 7 loss to utah 3 years ago, and the game 7 massacre against the mavs 5 or 6 years ago. Those two losses crushed me.
I thought it was Al Smith. Not sure what kind of defense we were playing, but I don't blame him for "biting" on Elway's running. As a LB, he probably assumed that was his job and that someone else would help out behind him with Vance. It was basically like one defender trying to stop the option. Do you hit the QB and have him pitch it, or do you go after the RB and have the QB run right past you? You're pretty much screwed either way. If I'm wrong about it being Al Smith, forget everything I just said.
it was definitely a DB; i don't remember it being richard johnson but it might have been. i've long maintained the bronco and chief games were far worse than the buffalo game. they were inifinitely better teams in 91 and 93, and the bills game was just a once-in-a-lifetime fluke.
The sad part was that I believe they got killed by the media and fans for laying back vs Elway and not being aggresive so the next year we played the Broncos again and almost in the identical scenrio Eddy decides to blitz three straight plays and each one went for like 20 yards and they scored the game winning TD. AMAZING
it was richard johson: http://news.google.com/newspapers?n...XsQAAAAIBAJ&sjid=0IsDAAAAIBAJ&pg=5367,3988445
