I based my response on the article. I'm sorry if it offends your sensibilities but when the article declares a comparison with Hitler's regime and states:

This is a dark day for the United States, the day America died and the b*stard birth of a literal dictatorship.

I find it hard to take seriously. The day America died? Seems odd since at worst its being compared to the Alien & Sedition Act (which we seemed to have survived without becoming a dictatorship) and compared to the UK laws (it really would be news to the English to find out Blair is a dictator since he's getting kicked out of office). A literal dictatorship? Please. These jerkoff's don't seem to realize what a real dictatorship is. Sometimes in our democracy the pendulum swings too far one way or the other (look at McCarthyism), but it doesn't take long for the people to get tired of that and the pendulum swings back. In the meantime we've got the SC as a bulwark against the administration getting too crazy, and even then the administration only has a short time left. Further, what I AM worried about are encroachments that are unlikely to be reviewed by the SC. Those are much more dangerous IMO. If it makes you snarky because I don't take prisonnutcases.org seriously then I'm not going to apologize for that.

    Spoken like an honest person.

Do you not share the same viewpoint? If yes, then don't look down on me for it. If no, you are a liar.

For all those words Hayes, you carefully avoided directly retorting.

Did this legislation offend you (as an American)?

    Do you support this legislation?

    Yes or no please.

Not true. You claimed I was nonchalant. I am pretty sure I explained my position and refuted the charge.

Does it 'offend' me? No, I don't really get overly emotional about this kind of legislation. I think its another in a long line of poorly executed actions by the current administration in conjunction with Congress. Although it's kind of startling to see all this talk about the 'words' in the legislation. They should just concentrate on reality.

I don't support the kind of vague language that's been pointed out in the bill, so the answer is no.

There you go. I am not generally in favor of an overly intrusive government although I am unsure exactly where to draw the line where terrorism is concerned (just being honest).

You said "spoken like a Republican" in response to me saying "Better somebody else than me."

So are you saying that you would rather suffer than somebody else?

I live in New York. What do you think?

    What a stupid supposition.

Langauge is all important when it comes to legislation as the language of any particular bill will dictate the reality of how it is implemented. While I agree that much of the rhetoric on this is overheated how vague much of the language is certainly opens up the possibility of giving legal cover for acts that would be considered atrocious.

    Well that settles that.

****ing hilarious. And just a debate ago you used every post for linguistic nitpicking, prompting me to say

    That's priceless (and telling).

Just focus on reality Hayes - who cares if habeas corpus is suspended or if Bush's former legal council thinks the admin can legally torture children. Let's talk reality!
    ^^^
It does not get more real than that.

Acknowledged. I don't have the same problem, but I can certainly understand the quandrary.

I was making fun of rhad, SC - although I didn't think he would kneejerk so badly. Several times in the past he has been outspoken on the need to concentrate on 'reality' instead of words. Actually it went even better than I expected when he didn't get it either and goes off on a tangent below. Obviously as someone who consistently tries to find out what is actually going on rather than make generalizations I believe you need to understand the meaning the words. Oh the fun of the bbs. :)

Oh, rhad. You kill me. I guess using your exact line wasn't a good enough clue. :D

No more posting for me prior to coffee. ;)

I think this is one of your better comments. Honest and to the point. I don't agree per say, but concise.

Refreshingly honest (not saying you aren't usually honest) and fair enough. :)
