If you know he's going to be cut, common courtesy suggests you do it as early as possible. He's a good guy with some talent who helped us out last year. He deserves as much time as possible to hook on with another team. This once again shows Rudy acting in a way that make people want to come here.
Sounds good to me. I was a little shocked when I first heard the news that I was not thinking straight. Rudy is a class act and I trust whatever moves management makes!
After the first ten games of last season, exactly when did Torres have a game or streak or even a few minutes that would indicate he deserves any of the above superlatives. He showed a flash but did not pan out. He may look like Clyde but he ain't Clyde and is not going to do anything but sit on someones bench and get scrub time. Damon Jones is better than him and he's a bench warmer for the Kings even with Bibby out. Torres even stunk up Venezuela's games in the World's qualifiers.
4 PG's doesn't seem likely. Something must be up. I mean, why the heck we need Moochie, Tierre, and Maddox? That's basically 3 guys who can play only one position. Sounds like too much insurance to me.
I'm happy with this. Torres could have flashes occasionally on defense...but he never really looked to pass and he takes wild shots far too often for as poor of a shooter as he is. I hope he gets taken on somewhere else, but I can't say I am disappointed that he was cut from the Rockets.
This sums up my thoughts as well. Oscar seemed like a nice guy, but I just don't think he was as good as a fit as a back-up as many (including me) first saw him as. Surely, there is somebody out there that needs depth at the 2 spot and will pick him up.
With these cuts, so much depends on contract status. The reason Collier and Maddox will not likely be cut is because Collier has one more year guaranteed on his rookie deal and Tito has a partially-guaranteed contract. Bottom line: if you're going to have someone sit on the end of the bench, why not have someone you'd HAVE to pay anyway. Torres and Goodrich (and Tierre and Mickael) do not have guaranteed deals. Even if Tito isn't as good as Tierre, his contract will at least give him a slightly better shot at making the team.
I am really pissed. It is the business, I guess. I have to reach way back and rely on my trust in CD and Rudy to be able to finally accept this one. I feel such an emotional attachment to OT. We found him and this was the place where he was going to blossom. His exit was something decided back in summer league. There were guys on this board saying that his days are numbered. He did well since then, including last night. Really sad.
Thats how I feel about the situation. El Torro seemed like a hell of a guy. He is probably better than most backup shooting guards in the league. One good thing about Rudy is that he seems to do all he can to make sure training camp cuts like Torres are put into a more agreeable situation. He did it with Damon Jones and Matt Bullard so maybe he will do the same for Torres.
While it's a shame Oz couldn't crack the roster, I am glad that Hawkins is still in the fold. He IS our backup SG/SF.
i'm stunned . . . . i can definitely see Oscar being one of those guys that later on down the road comes back to kick us in the butt . . .
I agree with most of the comments about Torres being a gunner and the Rockets are better of with a defensive specialist like Hawkins. We have enough scorers now. It also seemed like last year Torres might have had a falling out with Rudy T. He started off getting some minutes at the beginning of the year and then we didn't see him at all. Maybe this was an injury but I don't really remember.
