hot damn!!! --------------------------------- Between the 22nd of December and the 1st of January GMT (inclusive), downloading will not adversely affect your share ratio. We will still be recording uploaded amounts, but ignoring downloaded. For those of you who don't often download because you are concerned it will affect your stats too much, now is your chance to get everything you've wanted. Similarly, those of you who are struggling to maintain a decent share ratio, now's your chance to seed everything you've previously downloaded or upload your own stuff, knowing that it will probably be downloaded much more. Because we don't want the site to be flooded with new users hoping to cash in on this, users who joined after December 21st are not included in this and their stats will still be recorded as normal. If this proves too much for us to handle, we may cut this short, but really hope that won't be the case. Merry Christmas! santa OPP Staff
OK, I have a question and figured this is the best place to ask. So, I'm really new to this torrent stuff and really didn't know about trying to keep ratios up and/or leaving my program open to let others seed from me. Yes, I know, I should have read up more about this stuff before doing it. Anyway, I've downloaded some stuff from a site for a week or so but now, when I go to download anything with my torrent program ( I use Tomatoe Torrent on MacOS X) and get absolutely nothing. It just sits there at 0% while it says I have a 0 for download speed. THEN, I do a little research (especially on the site itself) and figure out that my ratio is .43 and is what is probably effecting my downloads. So, my question is, what do I do now? What do I have to do to start letting people upload from me to get me ratio back up again? Where do I go in my program to do this? Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.
mogrod, I don't see how your ratio has to do with your speed troubles. That's not how these site regulate users. Especially since you just started. There is usually a grace period for new users. And if you were in trouble, they'd give you a warning, or just outright ban you. Besides, .43 ratio isn't even that bad for a newbie. I suspect that either: 1. There's no seeders on the torrents that you're trying to download. 2. You're behind a firewall that inhibiting your downloading. You might need to forward your ports. 3. You have all these torrents open for seeding, but your torrent program is set to only allow x number of active torrents. So check your options to see if it's limiting you like that. Or try to stop some of the torrents and see if that starts up your downloads. Or you can see if there's a "force start" option for your downloads, which overrides the default queue.
this same thing happened last year. It was the most amazing week of my life. I suggest taking this time to download discographies..... you can upload them forever and they obviously dont count against download... win-win
Wow. I just went to Oink to check my ratio from last night and it jumped BIG TIME! Upload what ya got and watch your ratio climb! I'll start my week of leeching tonight.
never got an invite from my post in October, but am still looking for one if anyone has one to share. Been using some other, but the speeds are horrible. My computer is always on and connected for sharing. raw10628@hotmail.com
I've got three Oink invites left, but like m_cable, I'm only willing to hand them out to those who are experienced in the torrent world and promise to seed and keep a high ratio. I can track you and rat-a-tat tat you if need be. Seriously, I wanna keep the invites coming. Also, Oink looks down on hotmail addresses, so those are a no go.
This Christmas bonus at Oink has been awesome. I've gotten about 3 gigs worth of stuff in the past 24 hours without it affecting my ratio. I suggest to everyone (who's eligible) to download everything you want now. And even if there isn't anything appealing, hop onto any big torrent with some downloaders to pad your ratio. It's only counting uploads right now, so you really have nothing to lose. Like I mentioned in the past, audiobooks have bigger sizes, and don't build up as many seeders so it's a good choice to build your upload with.
I've downloaded 35 gigs so far in the past 3 days. I almost forgot what the outside world looked like.
i think i'm pushing 50 gigs since the 22nd.... literally the greatest christmas present i've ever received. i've got a '74 acoustic rolling stones waiting for me when i get home.... awe-some.
As soon as Oink's server's come back up I'll send you an invite. I think they're on the fritz with all of the activity. Edit- Invite sent.
The BBC SFX Collection made me VERY happy this Christmas. I had such a hard time getting to a 1 share ratio, and I am looking at almost 4 now!
