Sampson was worth any pick in that draft. We could have demanded any pick and some more for Sampson and teams would lineup at our door to make the trade.
Cool. I thought you were a lot older than that. Anyway, hang around and don't let some of these chumps stop you from posting. I thought this was a decent thread for the off-season - I guess some of them have better ideas for threads, and we'll see them soon.
That is so true. Some people forget or never new that Sampson was suppose to be the most dominant center since Wilt Chamberlain. People thought he would be better than Moses or Kareem. Sampson could have demanded Jordan plus in 84.
Very Very True. I mean he was one of only 3 people i believe to win College Player of the Year 3 years in a row. Everyone is always quick to say what if this or that but you have to remember these people were picked becuase of how they did in college and who they were then and their potential. Just like the draft today. Who knew some people picked before Kobe or other players would be scrubs but second rounders would kick there butts. Same with Rodney McCray, in college he was a bad ass that's why we drafted him and anyone would have taken him at that position, At that time he was better than Drexler. Of course after it's all said and done we wish we had Drexler but nothing we can do about that now, but imagine.
I like this thread too. Beats all the fantasy-trade threads. How about for something a little more recent? What if Golden State did not match for Marc Jackson's contract? What impact would that have on the current Rockets? Another long term contract (as I recall, I could be wrong) and wasted space? Would he have been a better player on our team instead of languishing in Golden State and Minnesota? And most importantly would this have totally screwed us up and left us without Yao Ming (I think that this is a definite as we would have probably won enough games to not win the lottery or maybe not...)? When we signed Marc Jackson, I thought it was a nice pickup but in hindsight with Yao Ming now on board...
This one is pretty simple. The Rockets weren't going to pay both of them. Most likely they resign Sam, let Horry walk, and sign Barkley as a Free Agent the next off season.
What if Don Cheney hadn't been fired? Do you guys think he would've led us to the championship? The guy had won 50+ games when he didn't have Hakeem for something like 30+ games I think(?) the previous season. He had also won Coach of the Year the season before he got canned. I always hated Don Cheney and that pissed-but-puzzled look on the sidelines. Drove me nuts.
I don't normally like playing these games because there are too many variables to account for in most situations, but what happens if Seattle doesn't get knocked out in the first round by Denver in 1994?
What if they actually called the foul that occured against Dream as he attempted a last second 3-pointer against Seattle, game 7, 1993 playoffs?
Then, instead of beating Utah in 5 in the 94 WCF, we beat Seattle in 7... in an exact replica of the series the year before, except we actually hold on to a double-digit lead at Seattle.
One I've heard about was the near trading of Jordan early in his career to the Rockets. That would have been something to see. I would have preferred that they would have kept Cassell and Horry instead of trading them off to Phoenix. We lost too many young players for Barkley. don't get me wrong, I liked Barkley but he was already injury prone by then. The one I would never change is the trade for Damon Stoudemire. thank God that never happened.
That was 94. We were behind nearly the whole game. Down 3 with 1.3 seconds left. Max turnaround 3 pointer 4 feet behind the line to go into overtime where we romped.
We were not offered the number 3 for Sampson. This was the deal. The Blazers wanted a big man, and offered us Drexler and the #2 for either the #1 with which they would draft Olajuwon or for Sampson. We could have sent Sampson, gotten Drexler and drafted Olajuwon and Jordan with the first two picks. It would have required a bit of seeing the future.
To me it's not a game of fantasy, but more a way to remember some moments in Rockets' history. These guys have named some stuff I rarely think about.
what if sean elliott hadn't failed his physical with the kidney ailment and the robert horry/matt bullard trade with san antonio actually went through?
In the 1984 draft, did we get the 1st pick because we had one of the 2 worst records the year before? or did we acquire it in a trade
In 1984 there was a lot of conterversy that the rockets threw games to get one of the worst records in the league along with the Caveliers who wanted the first pick. We ended up tying with them and we won the First pick by a coin toss. After that season the Lottery was made =)
