Disagree. I've read the Maclean several times, and while the film obviously changed certain aspects out of necessity, I feel it perfectly captured the texture, characters, and feelings of the story. It was, IMO, perfectly done.
Well I guess if two people liked it so much then maybe I need to watch it again without my date giving me a BJ during the second half...
"Then in the half-light, all existence fades to a being with my soul and memories and sounds...and a four-count rythm and the hope that a 'fish' will rise."
"Jeremiah Johnson" is one of my all time favorites. Maybe it technically doesn't qualify, but "Lonesome Dove" is absolutely numero uno for me. Jones and Duval & the rest of the cast were perfect. I've watched it too many times to count. Another mini-series that is close behind "Lonesome Dove" is "Centennial",especially the first few episodes of the trappers, McQueeg & Pasquenelle. Spelling is probably wrong. Great acting, great scenery and great action.
For period pieces, "Death Hunt" with Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin is entertaining -- not a Top 20 but entertaining.
