Duel at Diablo was the one I was thinking of...but you have blown my mind! I can't believe I forgot about Garner's Support films...easily the best Western comedies ever, with Blazing Saddles. I guess I think of them as comedies first, Westerns second, although they apply. And the other one I was thinking of, I've just recalled, was Skin Game, which wasn't really a Western...
1. High Noon 2. Gunfight at the OK Coral 3. Magnificent 7 4. Shane 5. Man Who Shot Liberty Valence 6. A Few Dollars More 7. Tombstone 8. Destry Rides Again 9. Calamity Jane (Doris Day was hot in this one) 10. Rio Bravo
Okay, now that we have more candidates out there, we should re-think the "Best Ever" list, perhaps with subcategories. If you get into western comedies, then Bob Hope movies like "The Paleface" and "Son of Paleface" and "Cat Ballou," and "The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox" deserve mentions.
I always got those confused with those awful Richard Harris "Horse" movies when i was a kid, and have never seen them. I take it you'd recommend them? Cheyenne was the cat-house one I referred to eariler. Part of what made it so fun to watch was that those two were best firends in real life, and apparently their off screen interplay was a lot like their on-screen one; they were known to sit in rooms doing something, or fishing, etc. for hours, without saying a word, and being perfectly happy and at peace with each other.
The "Trinity" movies reminded me of another classic. "My Name is Nobody" - Henry Fonda & Terence Hill
Lol! Sadly, I was being serious. That was the first thing that occurred to me when I saw the title...maybe those who suggest I'm a little too academic might be on to something...
My Name is Nobody It has a wonderful blend of adventure, comedy and a simple but touching plot. Henry Fonda is perfect as an aging gunfighter who wants to retire. Terence Hill is perfect as the comical admirer who wants Fonda to go out in a blaze of glory. This is a must for all western movie fans!
Good call with Liberty Valence as number 1. In addition to the social commentary and James Stewart, John Wayne doesn't win the girl, which is something different. It's a classic and not just one of my favorite westerns but one of my favorite movies. 1. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence 2. The Good The Bad and The Ugly 3. Straight to Hell(if that counts) 4. The Long Riders 5. High Noon 6. Unforgiven 7. Big Jake 8. Support Your Local Sherrif 9. Blazing Saddles 10. Frisco Kid (Gene Wilder's speech to his would-be finance alone puts this one on the list.) Honorable Mention: Rooster Cockburn, The Cowboys, Fist Full of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, Shane, Open Range, (I can't remember the name of this Charlton Heston movie. He plays and extremely bigoted Army scout who hates Apaches with such a passion, that he refers to one Half Apache he had been sleeping with as an 'it'. The movie of course somehow shows him to be correct. But despite that or maybe because of it, it's one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. It wasn't meant to be funny but it's hilarious.)
No I believe it had the word Arrow in the title. Milburne Stone from Gunsmoke was in this. Jack Palance played the mean evil Apache. Brian Keith was alos in it.
Okay, here is my list (in order of "watchability") after reflection. The Searchers Little Big Man The Shootist Red River She Wore a Yellow Ribbon Dances With Wolves Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid High Noon The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence Stagecoach Magnificent Seven Sea of Grass Unforgiven The Wild Bunch Shane Outlaw Josie Wales There Was a Crooked Man Paint Your Wagon Pale Rider Fistful of Dollars True Grit / Rooster Cogburn The Cowboys
