    Did anyone watch Swimming Pool?

Please spoil it for me cause I'm not sure what the heck the ending meant - there are multiple interpretations, not sure if one is right or not. Or was it supposed to be ambiguous?

I really haven't seen many movies this year, but I just wanted to throw a shout out to "Kill Bill" which I thought was absolutely wonderful.

You got to watch Bad Boys II to know the differents, that movie got everything man wants to see: Women, car chase, shoot out, sick humor. That movie rocks!

    Show yourselves, elitist snobs!

    1. Russian Ark
    2. Lost in Translation
    3. Whale Rider
    4. Winged Migration
    5. The Man Without a Past
    6. Man on the Train
    7. The Station Agent
    8. Nowhere in Africa
    9. American Splendor
    10. Stone Reader

Something like that. Swimming Pool, Capturing the Friedmans, Spellbound, 28 Days Later, and Kill Bill were good. Seabiscuit was probably the most insulting movie of the year.

    ********SPOILER***************

I took it as her (the writer) making it all up. When we see the real daughter, I think we're supposed to realize that the all of the stuff in France was just her imagination.

I'm a peon who watches mostly mass-marketed movies (mainly because the theatre won't give me permanent back damage), with your occasional "indie" flick, so I have no idea what that statement means. Seabiscuit was a fine flick.

I barely saw any movies this year, but my top two, without a doubt are:

    1) Return of the King
    2) Old School (why isn't this movie getting more love - it is an instant classis - it was this year right?)

I'd never seen a horseracing movie before, yet I felt like I had seen it a hundred times before. Total auto-pilot script.

Old School is great, though. Earmuffs!

Thanks, that was my interpretation as well but it just seemed like - not another

    dream movie

    **spoiler**

Just watched Man on a Train last night. I thought it was good, non Hollywood story. I think I was somewhat disappointed because I looked at Ebert's or Bernadelli's 4 star review without reading the review and had too high expectations for the film.
For me, Seabiscuit was disappointing because I've heard the author speak a few times about the book ( on the radio ) and she is an awesome story teller so the movie suffers in comparison. Had a similar problem with A Beautiful Mind, reading the book first spoils the movie for me.

So again, how did it insult anyone? You do know it was a true story, right? Maybe that's why it resonated do familiar with you - because it was something that actually could and did take place. Plus, most horse racing movies out there are more about betting than the racing - i.e., Let it Ride.

Yeah it didn't blow me away or anything, but the acting and humor were superb. That kind of subtlety always grabs me (if that makes sense).

It's unfair to compare Seabiscuit the film to the book (which I haven't read). There's a lot more room to go on tangents and get into details in a book. Anyway, at the theater, the woman a couple of seats over from me starting crying a blowing her nose at the end, and I was like, "What world is this?" I mean, talk about a heavy-handed movie. Obvious stuff. And I'm no jerk--I got a lump in my throat watching My Dog Skip, for God's sake.

No, it's just that the whole structure is totally played-out. No surprises, no invention. Anyone could have written that script. If you can tell what's going to happen throughout the movie (even if you know the basic ending--in this case, the horse winning), that's a bad script to me.

It just struck me as contrived. That usually insults me.

    Thank you!

It was a great movie. But definitely not for everyone's tastes.

I just got back from seeing an hilarious movie called Telepathon!. It's a mockumentary about four teams of self-proclaimed psychics who are vying for a $100,000 prize on a new reality show called "Psychics Unleashed!"

    Very funny.

re: 21 grams - I need to not pay so much attention to reviewers because it always sets my expectations too high. Don't want to say anything so as not to spoil anything, maybe I need to see it again cause there is a lot going on, but I liked Amores Perres (the director's earlier work) much better.

In the Cut was much worse than I expected it to be coming from Jane Campion.

I agree with your take on the French movie - the nineteenth century woman comment bowled me over. The weird thing about Seabiscuit the movie is that it seemed to not be about Seabiscuit, it could have been about a race car! But I think the movie definitely encourages folks to learn more about the real story so that can't be bad.
