Can only include cities I've visited.

    1. Rome. Fascinating, cosmopolitan, ancient and new, exciting.

    2. Tokyo. As Dave Barry said in Dave Barry Does Japan, "Let me get this out of the way, and subtly: Tokyo is ugly. It looks like it was hit by an anti-charm missile." However, I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. It's amazing to get that much humanity squeezed into that space. Imagine a city a little bigger geographically than Houston with 4 times the people.

    3. Chicago. Tourist mecca. Downtown Chicago has it all.

    4. Palermo. Strange, incredible hybrid of all cultures in the Mediterranean, all mosques and temples and crumbling facades and, yes, ugly suburbs surrounded on three sides by the Conca d'Oro ("Golden Shell"), basically a lush green valley of orange and olive groves.

    5. Munich. I use this city as representative of Bavaria/Austria/Switzerland, a very green and mountainous area. The city itself? What city? It was Oktoberfest. I was ger-drunken.

    5. Sapporo. OK, I'm cheating. And biased. City in north Japan, famous for its ice festival, where my fiancée is from and where her family lives. :D

Can someone explain to me why San Francisco is such a popular choice?

I just don't see what all the hub-bub is about that city.

Nelson is beautiful, but its basically a smaller and not as good Whistler.

I gotta admit, San Jose and the rest of Costa Rica is simply beautiful, I loved the few weeks i spent in the city.

3814, have you ever been to Kaslo, B.C.? An old friend of mine started a jazz festival there about 11 years ago. It takes place on the first weekend of August. It's a stunningly beautiful village north of Nelson. The population is about 1000, which doubles during the festival.

When I was there last in '93, it was like stepping back in time to the '60's. A friend and I borrowed a boat from one of the members of the town council to motor around the lake. He had long red hair and an enormous beard! (and cracked me up)

It's hard to describe just how great this village and the festival are. Some of the best times are after it ends at night. Here's a link for anyone who's interested... www.kaslojazzfest.com. I should have started a thread about this early in the summer. I will next year.

Manny, if you've never been to San Francisco, what can I say? I'd live there in a New York minute... at least for awhile. :)

    5. Kyoto (Pristinely beautiful, but no place to get a job in a town built around a "Path of Philosophy")

    4. San Francisco (the yuppies are leaving...now's our chance)

    3. Anywhere in Texas (as i get older the hill country looks better and better. I'm partial to Houston, but i think if i went back i'd want to try something new. Corpus is too provincial but the food is still the best in the world , Austin is too...big city in small town britches meets Santa Cruz without a beach and the job market is probably even worse than it was when I lived there)

    2. Los Angeles (the 5% that is livable. REPRESENT THE 213. The rest is a soulless collection of stripmalls, ghettos and gated communities)

    1. Tel Aviv (highly under-rated. Prettiest girls in the world. Texans are definately an exotic commodity as well, so it's easy to get noticed. I got offered a job. I might do it.)

    Honorable Mention: NYC

I'm still pondering my 5 cities, but Kyoto and the surrounding area is truly amazing. It's one of those places where you walk around with your mouth hanging open in awe of the beauty. There is a lake in an extinct volcano with an island or two sitting in the middle (nothing like Crater Lake in the States) that appeared placed there by some Japanese architect, waterfalls drifting down the mountainsides, temples... it's just so... peaceful.
I was a teenager when I was there, and it's always stayed with me. A vision. I hope it hasn't changed.
