Great picks fade. I'm not suprised by your choices and almost named Contra, Ninja Gaiden and Bionic Commando myself. I've never heard of Einhander and never played Star Ocean 2, but have a similar gaming background as you, so I'm positive I'd enjoy them. Another RPG that blew me away around the time of a few of these games is Phantasy Star. I'm really interested to see how the latest one will pan out.
In no particular order Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1(NES) - Hardest game I've ever played. Still haven't met a single person that can beat it without cheating with a game genie. SuperMario 3 (NES) - one of the greatest games ever, just amazing. Fun and simple. Super Puzzle Fighter (PS and arcade) - Heck of a puzzle game. Plus the animation is cool, and when you duel another player, startegies starts to become amazing. Street Fighter 3 (PS2 I think and arcade) considered by many (including quite a few publications when they do top fighter games) to be the best fighting game. Purest control, smoothist reaction, and nices rhythm of them all imo. "Heavenly Sword Saga, probably translated this wrong" (Xian Jian Chuan Shuo) (PC) - if you have Chinese gamer friends that plays Chinese games/rpg, ask them about this game. It's game play nice at the time for an DOS game and the story is just beautiful. I think I cried at the end of the game (I aint ashame to admit it) and waited nearly 8 years for the sequel to come out, which was dissapointing, good game, but not as good as the original.
You and I must be at the opposite ends of the rpg spectrum, because I absolutely hated Chrono Cross. Aside from the kickass intro theme, the soundtrack was overrated; the regular battle theme is the worst I have ever heard, and almost single-handedly spoiled the game for me. I thought the battle system was stupid. The story was lame and depressing. The fetch quests that sent you to the same places all the time were annoying. It wasn't challenging at all, and the endings (I got both of them) were dreadful. Having all those one-dimensional characters was a dumb idea too. I'd rather have a smaller group of well-developed protagonists, like SO, FF4/6 or CT. Considering the greatness of Chrono Trigger, Cross was a massive let-down. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
Strange, I could say the same things about SO2 on my end as well. Also have to throw in that I felt the item creation and "extra stuff" was a waste of time. The emotion symbols made the text reading painful and too long. And I never understood bringing up 88 endings, like anyone is going to beat it anywhere that many times esp when all the endings are pretty much the same supposedly. There is more than 2 endings in CC btw. And all the characters ... there are a handful of them that are quite developed imo. The rest are just playthings, where you can switch em out to play with their grids, techs, innate colors, see their character designs and hear the game from their pov. I like that. It's not like I'm forced to play with every character, only the important ones and the ones I like.
From what I have read, the details so far have been: -battle system similar to PSO -there are vehicles(???) -entirely diff story having very little to do with PSO. -online -PS2 only -far more emphasis on single player than the last go around Sounds promising but I'll just have to wait and see whether it is actually a next step or just another updated rehash of the DC game.
Final Fantasy 7 (ps1) Final Fantasy 10 (ps2) Socom 1 & 2 (ps2) Zelda (n64) Zelda (nes) Secret of Mana (snes) Goldeneye (n64) Transport Tycoon (pc) A top 5 would be too hard to name, there's too many good games...
1. Super Mario Bros 1,3 and Super Mario World 2. Super Mario Kart 3. Sim City 4. Aerobiz 5. Civilization 2/3 others: Madden, NBA Live on SNES, Halo, Ken Griffey Baseball, Tecmo Bowl, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tetris, Paperboy, Jaleco Baseball, and Rampart. All of the time wasted on videogames.... priceless.

I'll add five games I haven't seen in this thread: Disgaea: Hour of Darkness - PS2 A strategy RPG that you can level up to 9999, convert monsters to your side, level up your weapons, armor and items by going inside them, fight a demonic congress to change settings in the game, multiple endings, new game +, and so much more. Miner 2049er - Atari 800 A sick mix of Donkey Kong and Pac Man that kept me coming back even after I beat it. World of Warcraft - PC Logged over 500 hours into this game, I think I'm obligated to mention it. Culdcept - Dreamcast Combination of Magic the Gathering with Monopoly, over 400 cards to collect, and many different strategies/decks to come up with. Castlevania Symphony of the Night - PS Classic 2D side scrolling action at its finest. A beautiful looking game with addictive game play. Hard for me to resist Castlevania with a ton of RPG elements. B
Wow this is really tough....(in no particular order) 1. Mario (NES)- First game I ever played 2. Perfect Dark (N64)- So many sleepovers as a kid with friends with multiplayer action. 3. Goldeneye (N64)- I know a lot of people who think 007 is better than Perfect Dark, but I have always thought Perfect Dark was better, to me it was Goldeneye but with better stuff. 4. Turtles in Time (SNES)-Everytime I play this game (my friend still has SNES) I still enjoy it, it never gets boring to me. 5. Halo (XBOX)- I hesitated to put this one on here, since its only been around for a few years, but like Perfect Dark....so many sleepovers with friends with literally all-nighters of Halo Honorable mention: Chrono Trigger, Ken Griffey Baseball, Tecmo Super Bowl theres just to many great games...

Gosh this question is impossible! In no particular order: Tetris (NES) Mario Kart (SNES) Wonder Boy (Sega Master System) Street Fighter II (SNES) NBA Jam (SNES) We need brackets.
1) The Legend of Zelda (NES) 2) Diablo 2 (PC) 3) Command and Conquer (PC) 4) Total Annihilation (PC) 5) FF VII (PS1) All 5 of these games sucked out major chunks of my life. I still fire all of them up every now and then.
Top 5 in no particular order: Resident Evil 2 (Playstation) Resident Evil 4 (GameCube) Metal Gear Solid (Playstation) Metal Gear Solid 3 (PlayStation 2) Deus Ex (PC)
For the C64: Jumpman The coolest thing about this game (besides 30 completely distinct levels), was the addition of bonus time. You could set the speed of the game inbetween levels from speed 1-8, but you would lose potential bonus points. This simple addition sent the replay factor of the game off of the charts. For the arcade: Street Fighter II (' and championship) I was living in Japan at the time and all of the machines were linked up in pairs so you didn't have to be elbow to elbow with your opponent. The competition was ridiculous and plentiful - if you were good enough you could play for an hour and not have to play against the computer. I couldn't count the hours I spent in arcades playing this game. For the PC: Warcraft was revolutionary - so cool. Duke Nuke'm 3D was simply great - so many cool scenes and lines. After finding a Duke Nuke'm pinball machine: "I don't have time to play with myself". The second level boss: "I'm going to rip your head off and @#$# down your neck" - the cut scene showing him tearing the head off, pulling out a newspaper and whistling was pure genius.
