    ha ha!

i had an older version that was pretty rudimentary, but i got the new version (3?) a few months ago and you can do pretty much anything you want with it. you can create full songs with all kinds of crazy sounds, string sections, japanese percussion, sythesizers, ect. you can put all kinds of effects on each different instrument.

it just takes me a really long time to work with. there is so much you can do with it.

not bad for a free program.

I’m likin’ you list a lot, including Richard Thompson. I haven’t heard the new one but I have Mock Tudor, which is great if a little bleak in outlook. I haven’t heard a few of the bands on you list but I’ll be checking them out for sure.

Here’s my top 5 of the moment:

    New Pornographers – Electric Version
Broken Social Scene – You Forgot it in People
    The Notwist – Neon Golden
Do Make Say Think – Winter Hymn, Country Hymn, Secret Hymn
The Constantines – Shine a Light
The Shins – Chutes Too Narrow (I just bought it so I’m not sure what the shelf life will be.)
    (ok, my top 6 then)

On my “very good, not great, but I likem’” albums list:
    The Weakerthans – Reconstruction Site
    Caedmon’s Call – Back Home
Young and Sexy – Stand Up for Your Mother
The Wrens – The Meadowlands (too much emo for my tastes)

    Favourite new old album:
Godspeed You Black Emperor! – “lift yr. skinny fists like antennas to heaven!”

The next album you buy should be Electric Version.

Yeah the Beulah album's pretty good, but nowhere near the quality of The Coast Is Never Clear. I still need to hear When Your Heartstrings Break.

Check out Richard Thompson's Mirror Blue (out of print) if you haven't already. Top ten all time for me.

I need to check out those others--especially GYBE, since I like Sigur Ros so much.

I think the only two albums I bought that were released this year were Poodle Hat by Weird Al and Everything Will Never Be OK by Fiction Plane...both extremely solid...

What? Yes, 9th Wonder uses Fruity Loops to make his beats. So what? That's BS that people compain about that. It doesn't matter if he was using and ASR or MPC, it matters what you do with your equipment. You can actually do alot of stuff with Fruity Loops or Reason so I find it funny when people get angry that they dropped a ton of money on some hardware and their stuff doesn't sound any better.

    Anyway, for top albums...

    Another vote for Outkast.

Man, I forgot to mention this album - it is a special case.

The album is "Liz Phair" by Liz Phair and is her fourth, not first, album. Now, if you listen to pop radio some, you probably have heard a song off the album called "Why Can't I?". When I first heard that song, I thought it might be by Avril Lavigne, but I was floored to find out that Liz sang it.

However, that song was written by the same people that write for some of Lavigne's song. But they are some other songs on that CD that are so damn catchy and fun besides "Why Can't I?", and I don't regret buying the album.

Yet, I know what Liz Phair used to be since I have her 3 previous albums - and sorry, but "Liz Phair" is not really her. It is a different person, but that is okay because I enjoy it. But it is not Liz Phair (I know that might sound confusing but other Liz fans know what I am talking about). In other words, Liz sold her soul to make a pop album or at least that is what it looks like. I should hate that album with every fiber of my being, yet I can't bring myself to hate something that contains something so catchy in "Why Can't I?"

Some great choices in this thread. Rather than repeat them, I'll just add the follwing:

    Travis - 12 Memories
    Damien Rice - O
    Warren Zevon - The Wind
    George Harrison - Brainwashed
Lucinda Williams - World Without Tears
Lyle Lovett - My Baby Don't Tolerate

Anyone have the new CD from Brand New? I've heard that it's good.

Also, this thread has convinced me I must run out and get the new Shins CD ASAP!
