In no particular order, my best vocalists (that I can remember) from the 1960's that I saw in concert. I realize I went way over the "number," and these are only from the '60's. I've forgotten some good vocalists, without a doubt, and couldn't include the chicks, like Janis and Grace, or any of the great blues vocalists. I also left out great singers from groups that didn't really have a lead singer, like Buffalo Springfield: Jim Morrison Robert Plant Mick Jaggar Roger Daltrey Ray Davies Jimi Hendrix Captain Beefheart Eric Burdon Mike Love (the Beach Boys) David Clayton-Thomas (Blood, Sweat, and Tears) Steve Winwood (Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith) Steve Marriot (the Small Faces, Humble Pie) Rod Evans (early Deep Purple (first 3 LP's), included because the band was just so damned good in the late '60's)
Freddie Mercury - the best Paul McCartney - surprised he hasn't been mentioned yet Layne Staley - was my favorite singer growing up, amazing tone Eddie Vedder - that low end is phenomenal.
capt beefheart magic band drummer/arranger john french is playing at threadgills on 10/7 doing his songs with a bunch of my friends as his backing band...supposedly he sings just like the captain...and from what my friends are telling me, he is very specific with how he wants them to play. he has charts for every instrument and has been emailing everyone with instructions. its sounds kind of nerve-racking! restricting this list to only dudes cuts my favorites in half and prevents me from listing my all-time favorite vocalist, liz frazier from cocteau twins. i picked 7 and 5 were texans so i cut off the non-texans. waylon jennings - the epitome of manliness tommy duncan - bob wills and texas playboys singer - PURE TONE!!! randy biscuit turner from big boys - soulful punk doug sahm - san antonio conjunto-rock n roll soul willie nelson - king of phrasing and tone.
Knew you'd put Marriot in there, his voice is rock n roll personified. Nillson!!! Lowell George from Little Feat Chris Robinson from the Black Crowes Richard Ca$hcroft from the Verve Steve Kilbey from the church
Robert Plant (Led Zep) Paul Rodgers (Bad Company) Steve Marriott (Humble Pie) Steven Tyler (Aerosmith) Steve Winwood (Traffic/Spencer Davis) Dan McCafferty (Nazareth) Freddie (Queen)
Little Richard is by far my favorite. I remember hearing that he is Lemmy's favorite too. Of course, the rest of mine are all punks. Jello Biafra - DK Peter Zirschky - Funeral Oration (the Dutch hardcore band, not the Italian metal band) Kevin Seconds - 7Seconds Blag Dalhia - the Dwarves
Dude, I love these lists. It's great to read others favorites and then check out any you never heard of, or even forgotten about.
Jack white John frusciante Jimi hendrix Are also fantastic singers. Frusciantes especially. His use of falsetto is pretty beautiful
I love em too bro! Glad to find the other clutchfans music lovers and musicians. Each one of these threads i always find more great musicians that I havent heard based on the comments. I wonder when someones gonna make the drummer thread haha. Btw you are in houston and love punk so do you know 30 foot fall?
I knew Chris LaForge (barely). Sad to hear about his passing. I played a show with his hardcore band, Feels Like Murder, a few months ago. We hung out and chatted for a while afterward. I don't know the rest of the guys though. Just seen'em onstage.
I only know about them (they are kickass) because his daughter is one of my good friends and my best friends girlfriend since high school. I knew her for years before knowing who 30 foot fall was. She got us vip wristbands to that st arnolds brewerys 30 foot fall chris laforge RIP shows. i met him before i knew how good his band was. RIP for sure.
Harry Nilsson was fantastic. Good call! I knew I had forgotten some guys from the '60's. Saw Harry as well, at the Music Hall, I think.
Yep, 30 Ft Fall influenced a lot of us Houston kids. They inspired us to go out and start our own bands. I still remember my buddy playing their CD for me in '93. They got me into bigger bands like NOFX and Bad Religion. You're in Austin right? Any good punk bands I should check out, if they come to Houston? When I lived there Lower Class Brats were the big new thing.
Im glad to see beefheart mentioned so much. In middle school one time i was watching a john frusciante interview and he was going on about how trout mask replica is genius and beefheart is one of his biggest influences. I used to jam that album and safe as milk a lot back then. That song "woman" on safe as milk is super trippy. I think my favorite song on troutmask was called "moonlight on vermont" Super intense music. Love it Edit: the song on safe as milk i was talking about is called "where theres woman" not woman. Its been over 2 years since i really jammed him daily like i used to
Honestly im not as plugged into to the local punk scene as I should be in austin. I knows of daze and days in houston. I know all the big more successful punk bands like leftover crack and stuff like (the dude i jam with all the time who plays drums is a die hard punk fan) i love it too but when it comes to the local scene i mainly only know math rock. Feuding fathers (favorite local band), boyfryndz, hikes are some of my favs. Future death is a badass acid punk band thats local
