Highlights: Alperen Sengun leads Turkey past Sweden and into FIBA tournament final
    Ben DuBose

    August 18, 2023 1:51 pm CT

Following a late change in plans, Alperen Sengun is now playing for Turkey’s national basketball team in this month’s FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament. On Friday versus Sweden, Sengun continued his run of strong form with 16 points and 5 rebounds on 6-of-9 shooting (66.7%), including 2-of-4 on 3-pointers (50.0%).

For the game, Turkey went +22 in Sengun’s 24 minutes played. Other current NBA players on Turkey’s team include Philadelphia’s Furkan Korkmaz and Utah’s Omer Yurtseven.

After going 3-0 in group play, Turkey was one of four teams to advance to the knockout stage, with both semifinal games taking place Friday. Led by Sengun, Turkey won its game with ease, 105-84 (box score), to set up Sunday’s final versus Croatia. The winner of that earns a ticket to next year’s qualifiers for the 2024 Olympics.

All of Turkey’s pre-qualifying tournament games have taken place at Sinan Erdem Arena in Istanbul, which will host Sunday’s final.

From Friday, here’s a look at Sengun’s highlights versus Sweden. As for the Rockets, Sengun averaged 14.8 points (55.3% FG, 33.3% on 3-pointers), 9 rebounds, 3.9 assists in 28.9 minutes last year. He remains Houston’s expected starting center entering training camp for the 2023-24 NBA season, which begins in October.

CBS Sports' list is based on how we think the game's greatest will fare in 2023-24

Each of CBS Sports' eight NBA staff writers -- Brad Botkin, James Herbert, Jack Maloney, Sam Quinn, Bill Reiter, Ameer Tyree, Colin Ward-Henninger and Jasmyn Wimbish -- submitted individual lists of their top 100 players in the NBA for the upcoming 2023-24 season, and results were calculated by assigning a point value to each player's place on each writer's list. A player ranked No. 1 received 100 points, while a player ranked No. 100 received one point, and the cumulative point totals were used to determine the order for this year's edition of the CBS Sports NBA 100.

    100. Grant Williams | DALLAS MAVERICKS PF | Last year's rank: 100
    99. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope | DENVER NUGGETS SG | Last year's rank: Not ranked
    98. Bruce Brown | INDIANA PACERS SF | Last year's rank: Not ranked
    97. Scoot Henderson | PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS PG | Last year's rank: Not ranked
    96. Markelle Fultz | ORLANDO MAGIC PG | Last year's rank: Not ranked
    95. Bojan Bogdanovic | DETROIT PISTONS SF | Last year's rank: Not ranked
    94. Robert Williams III | BOSTON CELTICS C | Last year's rank: 56
    93. Jordan Poole | WASHINGTON WIZARDS SG | Last year's rank: 71
    92. Jabari Smith | HOUSTON ROCKETS PF | Last year's rank: Not ranked

Smith went through the usual rookie struggles on a rudderless Houston squad to begin last season. But he began to figure things out toward the end of the year. He scored in double-figures in 19 of his final 20 games, averaging nearly 16 points and eight rebounds over that stretch on 47/37/78 shooting splits. That finish, plus a brief, dominant stint at Summer League, set the stage for what should be a much more efficient and productive 2023-24 season with the new-look Rockets. -- Ward-Henninger

    91. Mike Conley | MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES PG | Last year's rank: Not ranked
    90. Walker Kessler | UTAH JAZZ C | Last year's rank: Not ranked
    89. Jalen Green | HOUSTON ROCKETS SG | Last year's rank: Not ranked

Only eight players in NBA history have averaged at least 22 points during their age 20 or younger season. Jalen Green is among them. He is lightning-quick, an explosive leaper who can get to the rim with ease, already a high-level ball-handler and flashed some improved passing chops last season. He has also been derided as an inefficient chucker who doesn't play defense or help his team win. While it's unfair to hold him responsible for Houston's record, there are some real concerns about his efficiency and work (or lack thereof) on defense. Few players will be more interesting to watch this season than Green, who will be under the tutelage of new head coach Ime Udoka and playing alongside veterans for the first time in his career. -- Maloney

    88. Immanuel Quickley | NEW YORK KNICKS PG | Last year's rank: Not ranked
    87. Kevin Huerter | SACRAMENTO KINGS SG | Last year's rank: Not ranked
    86. RJ Barrett | NEW YORK KNICKS SF | Last year's rank: 63
    85. Alperen Sengun | HOUSTON ROCKETS C | Last year's rank: Not ranked

The Rockets have a lot to figure out still, but Sengun appears to be a valuable building block. The Turkish big man averaged a near double-double in his first season as a full-time starter, posting 14.8 points, nine rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. He isn't the biggest or the most explosive, but he brings relentless effort and should get more credit as a passer. Sengun has grown to 6-foot-11 after entering the league at 6-foot-9, and could be in for his best year yet. -- Tyree

    84. Herbert Jones | NEW ORLEANS PELICANS SG | Last year's rank: 88

    50. Brook Lopez | MILWAUKEE BUCKS C | Last year's rank: 84
    49. Kristaps Porzingis | BOSTON CELTICS C | Last year's rank: 86
    48. Fred VanVleet | HOUSTON ROCKETS PG | Last year's rank: 38

Fred VanVleet had a bit of a down year in 2023. After making his first All-Star team in 2022, his 3-point percentage dropped to a career-low 34.2% and he failed to garner even a single All-Defense vote. These are concerning trends for VanVleet as those skills are his calling cards as a player. VanVleet practically never scores inside of the arc, and though he had his best playmaking season last year, his shooting and defense generate the bulk of his value as one of the NBA's smallest starting guards. Is VanVleet slipping as he approaches his 30s? Or will a move to Houston -- with a group of teammates eager to create their own looks -- be just the change of pace he needs? -- Quinn

    Drawback bigs
The center position is in a weird spot in the NBA. The big fellas are certainly valuable, and the absence of a credible big proves to be a fatal flaw for playoff entrants on a near-annual basis. Somehow, the shortcomings that nearly every player possesses seem to become magnified when they manifest in fives. Perhaps this occurs because the biggest players on the court tend to stick out. Or maybe scheme and style of play is so dependent on who is occupying the biggest and perhaps second-biggest slots in a lineup that when a playoff opponent “solves” that scheme, it is often the big who bears the brunt.

Some centers are so good and talented that their teams are comfortable with the tradeoff between advantages given and taken. But for others, their usefulness becomes more situational. If their drawbacks are exploitable, they can become liabilities. But if not, they can succeed and perhaps even dominate at times.

The fun thing about this group is the drawbacks are all different. Brook Lopez lacks foot speed against smaller lineups and stretch 5s. Jarrett Allen has been physically overwhelmed by larger or stronger opponents, as has Nic Claxton. Isaiah Hartenstein and Draymond Green are not meaningful scoring threats. Though improved, Alperen Şengün’s defense is untested in high-pressure playoff environments.

    Tough shooters
Unlike the “Undersized Guards” group in Tier 4C, Donte DiVincenzo and Fred VanVleet combine excellent shooting with a physical robustness that allows them to be competitive against larger players, which is why they get the nod here.
