My dad say Sabonis play in Afghanistan during his prime (right before the Russians invaded) and same him like 7 years later on the Trailblazers... He always talks about Sabonis in his prime. From what my pops tells me, he was a great player in his prime. Too bad he didn't play in the NBA! I think he is one of the most underrated players of all time.

That's true, Kukoc was the glory, the Euro-Jordan before coming into the NBA, but also because of that, he was not very welcomed and not given much chance to play to his strength. It's also true that he doesn't have the personality to take over a game so he is not a NBA style team leader a Yao Ming could be (or is).
Kukoc is a great player, but he came to the NBA with an asterisk timing and history (Pippen's jealousy, Jordan's ego & conflict with Krause); never have a chance to be the 20-7-7 player he's supposed to be. He also became less effective as he got banged up later in his career, making him a marginal bench player who uses smarts to get by.

By NBA standards,Kukoc was only slightly better than average...not great.MJ had a way of making all those guys appear better than they were.

Doesn't Steve Nash carry duel citizenship for both US and Canada. Something just seems completely wrong about omitting Dream and putting Nash in the best foriegn player list.

Your pop is not alone. Sabonis was still a great center after the injury and when he played for the Blazers. He still understood ever facet of the game and played damn good when he was in the NBA. As I recall he did not have much of a problem against David Robinson in the 88 olympics.

Pre-injury Sabonis may have been a top 10 center of all time...but unfortunately we will never know.

    one never knows.

in his prime physical years, he was great against inferior competition---a couple of below the NBA, plus they only play 2 games a week. Would have love to see him play, during his prime, against NBA competition over a long NBA season where there are many back-to-back games. it is too bad that Sabonis chose not to play in the NBA in his prime years.

did any of you guys actually see him play or following him closely, over the course of a few seasons, to make that claim.
