SJC --- thanks for the response. i guess i'd go for Munich. I love snowboarding - like mountains and lakes and all that good stuff. How hard was it for you to learn the language - if you have? I'd like to get back to my heritage a bit and learn that...my dad's side is 100% german though he was born in Canada.
I think Texans interested in Germany will have a natural affinity for Bavaria (and therefore Munich). Bavaria is the Texas of Germany. In the south of the country, very proud of their state/province, with a slight tendency toward secession.
I took Geman in HS, and continued it in college. I thought that learning the language overall was pretty easy, but I was also excited to learn it. The easiest part was definitely the vocab and sentence structure and, of course, the hardest part I had with German was most definitely the grammar - I really hated grammar.
Dude? Where is San Diego, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz and Carmel? I'm a Texan but if I could afford it I'm going to where the weather is 70 degrees everyday, not to a cold or rainy climate. Plus you get KPIG over the airwaves when your in the car. That ought to be worth a hundred quality of life points right there.
I'd have to ask my parents, but as far as I remember, at age 3 I kind of got the hang of it...and a year later, I could read it, too . Surprised my parents by reading to them from the sports pages of the morning newspaper.
I understand Danish a bit, but don't speak it. It is a little similar to German, but with no offense to anyone, I'd have to agree about the throat disease. You could ask someone who knows Danish what "Fisse" means, but don't quote me . At my previous employer, every male employee automatically became part of the "fisse" mailing list...kind of different from most companies' policies, especially in the US. I agree, the best-looking stewardess I have seen was on SAS, but Singapore Airlines is not bad either. But today, SAS' supervisory board decided to break up the company .
plugged "fisse" into an online translator and nothing popped up, perhaps it's slang, related to "fiske?" bavarians in texas: wasn't Gruene near san anton settled by germans?
there is a lot of German communities in central Texas, Fredricksburg, Shiner, Boerne.. Fredricksburg was/is the largest of the German settled towns...it endured many Commanche indian raids during the mid-19th C that lead to a treaty between the German settlers and the Commanches. It is believed to be the ONLY treaty between native Indians and European colonists that has never been broken.
That's the problem with these lists. Who gets to decide what factors should be taken into consideration when determining quality of life?
With money, any place would turn into a great place for you to live. Without money, any place, expecially the best cities would turn into a worse place for you to live. HAHA.............
I just found that one pretty funny. Houston as one of the safest cities? That I did not expect to see, no way.
I allways kind of knew that the best city to live would be way outside the U.S. If i could only afford to move there i would instantly, i just cant stand the traffic and the wether in houston.
