BCG would make a much bigger splash and would result in an immediate increase of butts in seats. Johnson...not so much.
Yeah, I imagine NBA talent would seek him out too. And what parent wouldn't want their kid going to play for a guy of AJ's character? I am sure the guy could recruit. AJ brings a defensive mindset and gives an immediate identity, AND he knows how to mold a decent PG which will be huge. BCG is a God but AJ could be special at that level.
Take Floyd off of UH's board... http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=5040891 UTEPhas hired former USC coach Tim Floyd and will introduce him at a news conference in El Paso at 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Floyd was the popular choice of UTEP boosters to replace Tony Barbee, who left to take over at Auburn after leading the Miners to a Conference USA regular-season title and a first-round NCAA tournament appearance. Sources said UTEP officials were on the way to pick up Floyd, a New Orleans Hornets assistant, for Tuesday's news conference. Floyd was at UTEP as an assistant under the late Don Haskins from 1978-86. He has had a lengthy coaching career as a head coach at Idaho, New Orleans, Iowa State, the post-Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls and the Hornets before going back to college in 2005 with USC. Floyd was 85-50 at USC, going 39-33 in the Pac-10 and winning the conference tournament in 2009. Floyd resigned in 2009 after four seasons at USC, amid allegations that he committed a violation in the recruitment of O.J. Mayo. It has been alleged that Floyd gave Mayo's handler Rodney Guillory a $1,000 cash payment. Floyd has denied the allegations. Floyd and USC, which conducted its own probe and imposed its own sanctions on the program, met with the NCAA's Committee on Infractions in February. A decision is due from the committee sometime in the next month. Multiple sources told ESPN.com that UTEP was assured before hiring Floyd that he would not be individually penalized in connection with the USC allegations. UTEP would not be prohibited from hiring Floyd, even if he were to receive a show-cause penalty from the NCAA -- in which any school hiring him would have to make its case for hiring him to the NCAA. But UTEP would only have to appear before the Committee on Infractions to see if any other sanctions will be placed upon him. The Miners (26-7, 15-1 C-USA) lost to Butler in the first round of the NCAA tournament. They are expecting to lose center Derrick Caracter to the NBA draft.
Great hire by UTEP. Timmy can flat out coach at the college level. He also spent a lot of time there so knows the area well.
These are all the things that were said before Clyde Drexler coached at UH. You know hoe well that worked out.
I'm sure he tried, but why would a recruit pick Houston over Texas, or A&M, or Baylor, or any other school in a major conference.
TAMU 5 years ago was WAY worse off than UH is now. TAMU is where coaches went to die. Baylor? They took it a step further, their players actually did the killing. UH can get recruits. Clyde didn't because he knows as much about coaching as I do.
I seriously doubt that you know as much about basketball and coaching basketball as Clyde Drexler. Clyde simply underestimated the tireless effort that is required to recruit and coach at the same time. I cannot tell you how many times I heard how great Clyde was going to be because of his NBA success. "He knows what it takes to get where these kids wanna be." "How could you say no to a legend like Drexler." None of it really mattered and was all lip service.
Yeah, Clyde kind of got lazy. I remember Clyde's first game, I was there. We played UT in Hofheinz on ESPN2. I chatted up Calvin Murphy. We won and everything was right. The next game we lost to IUPUI and everything went downhill from there. Gee Gervin, George Gervin's son, was the star of Clyde's first few teams. I swear that Yao signed on to play at UH but couldn't get the OK from the Chinese government. Unless is was some other 7'6" asian guy. I think it was Drexler who recruited Alton Ford. Ford was ranked as the #1 recruit at one point but I think he got dropped to 9th after he signed with UH. I remember that Zach Randolph was another top recruit and I always compared the two because the had similar builds. They posted similar stats as freshmen and both entered the draft after only one season. Randolph turned into a good player while Ford became a journeyman, floated around the Euro leagues and is now in the D-League.
Didnt Clyde recruit Rashard Lewis also? I know he had the inside track on T.J. Ford but he quit before Ford's senior season so he dropped the Coogs off his list.
He also signed Chris "birdman" Anderson (nba player), Chris Booker (all big-ten with Purdue), Antonio Falu (national top 50 recruit) and George williams (national top 30 recruit) among others. Also got looks from guys like Jared Jefferies.
Man whatever happend to Falu? I know when he was at Waltrip thats all the local sports talked about. George Williams was a big time bust with the hype he had. Drexler almost had Field Williams (Waltrip H.S.) too but his grades kept him out of UofH. He was one of the top guards in the state.
