my secret plans....hahahahahaahahahah!!!! you're all part of my master scheme!!! actually i'm a shill for good comedy... arch conservative is a funny phrase!
For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure the guy from Will and Grace is straight in real life... the irony...
Why are they still in the closet? They probably don't want to deal with the eventual media crush and scrutiny and having to become (possibly an unwilling) champion of gay rights. I knew a couple of gay people in college, and I even had a gay roommate 2 years back (a friend of mine from school who came out 3/4 of the way through our one-year lease in the City). Having talked to these guys, I learned they really only want one thing: to be left alone and treated like everyone else. I can imagine that this is probably what most gay celebrities (and "commoners") want. It's their business, not ours. So I ask again, what does your list have to do with anything? Do you honestly think in-the-closet celebrities care or are paranoid about box office draw? Rumors circulate, anyway. Invisible Fan mentioned Richard Gere. Excellent example. (What? Critical acclaim for Chicago??) MadMax mentioned Kevin Spacey (Huh? Best Actor Oscar??). Another good one. It's all about privacy, not their oh-so-precious reputation. Actors are more known for their... gasp... acting abilities and characters, not for their real life personas. (Think about your favorite actor and ask yourself, "What do I really know about him in real life?" I'll bet not much.) You keep harping on Russell Crowe and his macho image. So what? He got more accolades and praise for The Insider and Beautiful Mind than he did for Gladiator. Does that tell you something? Not everyone is concerned with getting macho parts. In fact, NO actor wants to be pigeonholed doing so. Hell, even Schwarzenegger tried comedy to broaden his horizons. Sly Stallone tried comedy, too. You claim a gay celebrity cannot be an action figure, and for the THIRD time, I point to Sir Ian McKellen, for portraying Gandalf and Magneto. Don't believe me? Take a look at this and this. And hey! What about this guy, whom I suspect is gay? Surely they can't have macho parts and blow sh*t up. You're getting away from the main point here, going off on tangents about gays not getting macho roles. Once again, the REAL point is that someone told blatant lies about Tom Cruise to the general public, and he sued for slander. Simple. Easy to understand. End of story. No social ramifications here. Think "Shoplifters will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law" signs you see in stores, but change the word "shoplifters" to "slanderers."
I don't even think it's a gay issue, as was already pointed out. If it had been a woman who bragged about having an affair with Cruise and breaking up his marriage, he would be justified in suing her too.
I guess actors and politicians sue everytime there name is in the Enquire about them having a heterosexual affair. No we don't have a winner. Tom Cruise does not want to be known as gay.
I think it's harder to sue the Enquirer. It must be or they wouldn't be in business. Here you have a specific person making specific comments. Or maybe you're right, I don't know.
Ask, and ye shall receive: Ms. Conduit sued The National Enquirer for allegedly hitting Chandra Levy. Celine Dion sued The National Enquirer for allegedly being pregnant. Melissa Gilbert sued The National Enquirer for being called a "deadbeat" mother. John Major sued the New Statesman magazine for saying he had an affair (they got the woman's name wrong. ). And, oh, by the way, Cruise and Kidman also sued The Star for allegedly reporting that the couple needed coaching for sex scenes in the movie Eyes Wide Shut. Check out all the goodies here. In what universe am I making your point for you? Once again... this... is... about... privacy... not... box... office... draw. Actors... zealously... guard... their... privacy. However, ... this... case... is... about... pure... slander.... How else can I make you at least see my point but to say it slowly? I've tried every other way. Should I draw a diagram next? To quote PCU: "Caine and Hackman in the SAME movie... This is my thesis, man! This is my main argument!! I CAN STOP WATCHING TELEVISION!! YESSSS!!"
