I don't agree with it, but unfortunately I think it is still a slander. But its not like being called gay in 1955. But for an actor like Cruise, who always plays a lady's man, I think it would affect him deeply in his career.
Who came out (After hiding) and sunk, who came out (after hiding) and held their own? My guess is more entertainers sink than swim. George michael - sunk
Isn't a lot of that stemming from the fact that after she came out her show became 90% about lesbianism and 10% about being funny?
i'm with you...i freaking love ellen...she's sooooo hilarious!! love her dry wit...i knew she was a lesbian before her show became a political soapbox...she was still funny....after her show became a political soapbox, it was not funny.
Regardless of WHAT was said, most celebrities will fight, albeit viciously, to uphold their privacy and their name. It happens all the time. It's not the gay part that most likely bothers Cruise. Rather, it's the malicious LIE and rumor that was told. It's not like this guy said, "Well, I think he's gay." There's nothing wrong with that statement. It's his opinion, and he has every right to say so under the Bill of Rights (although it would raise eyebrows). However, this p*rn star claimed he was Cruise's LOVER and that their affair caused his painful divorce from Nicole Kidman. That, my friends, is an outright lie and cause for a lawsuit. Wouldn't you do the same if someone spread lies about you to the general public? And as for Hollywood, Tom Cruise will get any role he wants, regardless of sexual orientation. Why? Because he's freaking Tom Cruise. He can write his own ticket. Besides, a lot of people thought he was gay before the p*rn star opened his mouth, anyway. Did the p*rn star's false revelation affect the box office for Minority Report in any way? Did any of you refuse to see Minority Report because you thought Cruise was gay? For that matter, did any of you refuse to see LOTR because McKellan is a queen? Did you even think about sexual orientation while watching the movie? Unlike musicians or sports stars, actors are paid to act like someone else. People watch their characters on the big screen, not them, so why should anyone care if they're gay in real life? (And, yes, for that matter, why does it matter if anyone is gay, period?) Anyway, I really don't think the issue here is Cruise wanting to protect his fragile male ego or wanting to protect his box office draw as a macho man. Someone spread outright lies about him (gaining notoriety at his expense), and he was pissed. End of story.
By this point, how many of the general public still believes that he's straight? There's always been a significant percentage of actors who were gay, and every so often (at least) it's going to be someone whose main appeal is to straight women... hey, you can still look at him on the screen, and it's not like you were ever going to get in a real-life relationship with a Hollywood star anyway. But I guess he'd rather go around suing people, no matter what. Russell Crowe, on the other hand, has proven his heterosexuality plenty of times. Maybe too much.
You keep comparing this insignificant McKellan to Cruise. Name a star of Cruise's magnitude that is an out of the closet gay. Contest, I will name 10 huge straight stars, you name one gay of their magnitude. Tom Cruise Denzel Washington Russell Crowe Ben Aflek Harrison Ford Tom Hanks Kevin Spacey George Clooney Brad Pitt Samuel L. Jackson Name me one gay star of these guys magnitude. Just One.
there were a lot of rumors about spacey..didn't diminish his career any. fantastic actor, by the way!
pgabriel, you're missing the point. What does your list have to do with anything? Any one of those stars on your list could be gay. Do you know for a fact that they're ALL straight? They could still be in the closet, for all we know. Isabel had a good point about how a significant number of actors are (or could be) gay. Why don't they come out, you ask? Because it's none of our business, that's why. Just like it's none of your business what I do behind closed doors with my girl, and I assure you I'm straight (no wisecracks, please ). Forget box office draw. Do you really think that's the reason? Do you honestly think Tom Cruise would have to lower his paycheck from $20 million a movie to $10 million if he happens to be gay? We've already established that MANY people think he's gay. So, let's talk about openly gay celebs. Do you think Rupert Everett or Nathan Lane are having a tough time finding acting roles? Wasn't Ellen Degeneres the star of Hollywood Squares? Isn't Will & Grace highly acclaimed and watched? Not to go back to the "insignificant" actor you've never heard of (who's gotten 2 Oscar nominations in 4 years), but isn't Ian McKellen viewed as a action star of sorts now (playing Gandalf and Magneto)? Where is this gay bias you claim exists? For that matter, why is it important to be macho in Hollywood? Hell, acting is essentially theater arts, which is often viewed as stereotypical gay. I go to movies to see the character the actor portrays, not the actor playing himself (unless you're talking Being John Malkovich). So I ask again, why should anyone care if an actor is gay in real life? Hey, I may suspect Keanu Reeves is gay, but I'm not going to boycott The Matrix Reloaded or think any less of him because of it (although I do think he's a putrid actor)...
You just made my point. If they are gay, why are they still in the closet. If it is so many in the closet gays, why don't they come out. You keep saying you suspect so and so might be gay. Hello?, Why are they not coming out and saying they are gay. Do you really think it only has to do with privacy. And to your point about Ellen Degeneres and the Will and Grace actor, they play gay roles. As far as Will and Grace being so popular, I don't have any friends who watch that show so I really don't agree with that, and as far as Ellen Degeneres is concerned, her show immediately went off the air after she came out, so that is another bad example.
Well, disagree all you want, but Will & Grace is one of the most watched show on television whether you and your friends are watching or not.
no kidding!! great freaking show!!! other than ed, the best lighthearted show on TV right now, in my opinion.
That didn't come out right. I know it is a popular show, but I don't think it is going to go down as one of the most popular sitcoms in television history. But that is neither here nor there.
I don't want to argue about Will and Grace. As I stated in an earlier post, that is a show about a gay character. I'm talking about someone like Russell Crowe being gay, and still being able to get a role like Maximus, or Officer White in L.A. Confidential. When the guy from Will and Grace makes Tom Cruise income, then we can argue about that.
no...i want to argue about Will and Grace...i want to force you into submission to watch and love the show...and to force all your friends who currently don't watch to become avid fans...the kind of fans who check in each morning to willandgrace.com just to get all the extra tidbits of information they can...i will not cease until my goal is accomplished.
Who would've guessed that MadMax, arch conservative, would become a shill for the gay rights movement's goal of turning everyone fruity???
