I know Tom Cruise is a nut, and Scientology is wacko, but that clip didn't seem outlandish to me. He was basically saying that his religion teaches that they should be constantly concerned for the well-being of others. Big deal. Most religions tell their people that.

serious question...how is this any wackier than any other religion -- virgin birth, al-isra, ...? The only thing different about scientology is that its not mainstream,

its not suppose to be mainstream. it costs $200,000 or something to move up 'levels' in the church. you don't see any poor people in scientology.

It isn't, other than the fact that it was created on a bet.

Did you read the RADAR report? Once you get high enough, you have to start looking for disembodied aliens in people.

    nail on head.

    L. Ron created it just to see if he could. I tried to start a religion once. Turns out, people in college didn't need me to tell then that sitting on the couch and praying to the glass bong was the way to salvation. They were doing it already.

The alien stuff isn't the weirdest part, let's just put it on par with gods and angels etc and instead look at the orginization.

You have to pay money to advance through the Church.

Members are discouraged from contacting their family if they aren't members and if you do call them, they have a an officer of the church sitting there monitoring your call.

They extract secrets from you in the guise of trying to help you clear yourself of bad things only to threaten to let those secrets out if you try to leave the Church (the movie exec who wanted the church to help him stop being gay)

Hubbard and the current head of the Church have specefically targeted celebs to bring into the church.

They try to keep the Celebs from watching the news, tv, and going online to keep "negative" things away from them.

Special treatment of Celebs: When Tom Cruise was going to marry Nicole Kidman, he told the head of the church about a fantasy he had about running through a field of tall grass with her and the head of the Church had church members clear a field of rocks and spent thousands of dollars to plant tall grass on a field in Colorado where the wedding was happening to make Tom's dream come true. I assume they did it without telling Tom so that is just seems like it was coincidence.

So even if you believe that the concept of God is just as crazy as believing in Alien spirits, that doesn't mean Scientology is not operating like a cult. I definately encourage reading that RADAR magazine story.

[MadMaxPulpit] "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows* in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world" - James 1:27 ( * - orphans and widows were the "least" in the first century world...the poorest of the poor...the helpless...apply that as you will in today's context) [/MadMaxPulpit]

Yeah, DD is right. Hubbard was having a laugh and turned it into a money making machine, still laughing the whole time, privately. What a trip.

    Impeach Bush.

Anyone ever watch that Three's Company episode where Chrissy joins a religious cult that worships a head of lettuce named Ralph? :D

With all due respect, you don't know what you're talking about. You are wrong empirically, logically and from personal experience with people suffering mental illness.
