with regard to Gandalf not being all that in FOTR, what getsmartnow said. I wasn't thrilled about the boost given to Arwen's character for the sake of capitalizing on Liv Tyler, I guess, but that's just because I default more on the purist perspective. Having been really into the old English mythology, Tolkien (so I hear) has been justly criticized for being a little typically male-centric in his mythology. I'm generally very supportive of the trend toward strong, independent women characters, but wasn't this time just because it's hard to accept changes in plot to a much beloved series. I guess it also didn't help that the movie Arwen still didn't have much substance. Maybe it was the acting. POSSIBLE SPOILER: Back to Gandalf again, I'm looking forward to this scene in ROTK - "Your staff is broken," biatch Will be particularly sweet after the effect of the relevant scene in FOTR
SSSSPPPPPIIIIZZZOOOOIIIILLLLEEERRRR I'm looking forward to this scene in ROTK - As Gondor beseiged by the forces of Mordor, Rohan arrives to turn the tide, as the King returns at the head of the army of the Oathbreakers to win the day at the gates of Minas Tirith. I think I win.
Nomar, you win simply because landscape shots with thousands of little animated Middle Earth people are always breathtaking. Despite the relevance of that scene to the plotline, I'm not as into the "king" coming into his own. BTW, I think your post is a definite spoiler. I would tack on a viewer warning or edit.
I thought I was a geek about LOTR, but I saw the DVD of the extended version with a dude who saw the theatrical release 25 freakin times. 25 TIMES. I had felt like a geek for seeing it "only" six times. This guy also had a JRRT tattoo, in spidery-looking script (he showed it as proof of his geek-ness; no, it wasn't on his naughty parts, thank you, it was on his shoulder). Can't wait to see TTT, which looks to veer off in a couple of directions from its source material by tacking on a couple of Arwen scenes (*sigh* gotta bring in the Lifetime audience) as well as some bit with Aragorn being attacked while scouting and barely surviving. I won't spoil anything more but go to your nearest Barnes & Noble or Borders and check out the books on the movie. That bit from the original trailer, showing Eowyn standing at Edoras, staring into the distance, encapsulates what I love about this series: it plays like history, rather than over-the-top fantasy (although the upcoming CGI in TTT might change that a bit). Also, I want a new trailer for TTT. The one in theaters is getting stale. (It still gets me geeked up for the movie, though.)
All right, to put this in perspective: 25 different viewings of FOTR in the theater = 75 hours = over 3 days in a movie theater $250 (using ridiculous Manhattan ticket prices) Let's assume this trend holds throughout the 3 movies. Now we're looking at: 75 viewings for all 3 movies combined = 225 hours = over 9 days in a movie theater $750 (again using Manhattan ticket prices) That's just sick. This person should seek professional help (and not from this board )...
