Since the mods have decided to revoke my threadposting privileges - most likely because of the last religion thread I started - I'd like to ask someone to please post this (tangentially related to this thread) How much does it cost you if you sound black? So, is it racism that drives lower wages? Or culturism? Some combo of both?
That's what the author (misleadingly) wrote, not what the study ("react negatively to a culinary tradition other than their own by saying 'yuk'") said. It's not like any punishments are being handed out. It's just advising teachers how to prevent prejudices from developing at a young age. I don't really have too much of a problem with this. That said, what if a kid says 'yuck' to foreign food if it really is yucky and looks and smells yucky? What if a kid is just really sensitive to terrible food? I'm not sure what it's like in the UK, but I know in America that more and more parents, of all ethnicities and nationalities, can't cook for *****. I'm not gonna defend or condemn that, but it really does seem to be true. And if anyone will tell you honestly if food tastes bad, it's gonna be a kid. They have sensitive palates.
One day, a child hates curry, the next he's a violent skinhead. That's where it starts. I think people should be locked up for hate crimes, no matter what their age. There's no excuse for that.
My kid sometimes rejects his veggies... Does this make him anti-vegetarian? No, I just teach him the reason the veggies are beneficial, and train him to eat them, for what they are, for the taste they specifically have... for their uniqueness... This takes time in many things. It does not mean a kid is racist or intolerant. It means they must be taught.
