CompaqC, I remember that game. To top it off, it was an afternoon game!! But otherwise guys, relax. Hakeem has been doing it for years and has given us two championships with the fasting. -tariq ------------------
Believe it or not, that's the way it goes. Muslims usually wake up in Ramadan before sunrise to have a meal.....just o fill their tummy up till the sun gets lost ------------------ How Sweet it is!
CompaqC-- that game was awesome! dang-- i can't believe-- i think i had to listen to that one on the radio!.. or..hmm.. was that when we had kevin willis? I remember a fast break pass for a willis dunk early in the game. Barkley was callin' what "mr. olajuwon did was amazing" without a drip of water. -Elie17 ------------------ Oh.. so this is how you add a signature huh? coo coo.
Among current NBA players, Tariq Abdul-Wahad, Mahummed Abdul-Rauf and Shareef Abdur-Rahim are all Muslim. I know Mahmoud and Tariq both follow the Ramadan schedule, but not sure how devout Shareef is in his religion. ------------------ http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/houstonrockets2000
I think you will all be relieved to hear this...Over the past couple of years Hakeem has adopted a new method of fasting that lasts year round, so now that it is Ramadan it should have no significant affect on his performance... by the way being a Muslim myself, I have seen many people practice this kind of fasting. ------------------ ------------------ Hakeem: "Exit Suugar Lan"
I'm a muslim, I play for my HS team and I began fasting today. Here are some of the things we do during fasting. You wake up like around 4:30, before sunrise, and your not supposed to eat a whole lot, so you people who thought that Dream could eat all he wanted and be full for a day, well it doesn't work that way. lol Anyways, you eat in the morning, just like regular breakfast, and then after you eat you pray morning prayers, than you can't eat or drink. No water. You also can't do the regular illegal stuff (robbing, stealing, etc..) you can't curse, you can't think bad thoughts about anyone, I think that's about it. Then at sunset you break your fast with a date (an arabian fruit) and a some food. Then you pray, than you can eat all you want. I've been on my Jr.High basketball team in 7th grade, 8th grade, and now I'm on the HS freshman team and I've never experienced any hunger after the first year. You get pretty used to it. But sometimes it can be annoying because you gotta remember not to drink any water and stuff, so I have to remind myself like everytime after practice or conditioning. ------------------ Francis out top, 9 seconds on the clock, he gives a no look pass to Cuttino Mobley, 4 seconds left, Mobley passes to an open Langhi in the corner with 1 second left! Langhi at the buzzer.......YES!!! How Sweet It Is!!
Im a Muslim and whenever I fast (which is very very rare) I stuff myself as much as I can before 5:30 Shareef does fast the entire month also. And injecting fluid in your body is a no no. Unless its a matter of life and death. ------------------
What happens if you are watching a Baywatch rerun, and Pamela Anderson runs by in a wet bathing suit? Do you just think about baseball? Thanks in advance. ------------------

Indeed, the holy month of Ramadan lasts a month and moves back approx. 10-12 days every year. So, going by that calculation, Hakeem was fasting in the month of Feb. around 5-6 seasons ago - the Championship years. That memorable Bulls game you guys are referring to I believe was in January, around the '96-97 season - or Barkley's first as a Rocket. The purpose of Ramadan is not only to abstain from food during daylight hours, but many other acts of purity are involved (such as no sex during the day). It is the ultimate sacrifice and tests the will-power of oneself. If observed properly, Ramadan purifies the mind, revives the body and cleanses the soul. Playing organized basketball while fasting for the past four or five years as well as other sports has been a challenge, but like Rockets 'R Us, my body has adapted. If anything, I feel lighter and I become more focused in both school and on the court. As for NBA players obvserving their fasting; I know Shareef fasts regularly, and believe fellow Grizz Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf does as well. I'm not sure on whether Bull Khalid El-Amin, Nugget Tariq Abdul-Wahad or Knick Larry Johnson (who converted a couple seasons back) observe Ramadan. I've read through multiple sources that Kareem Abdul-Jabaar used to fast while playing, but have read and heard from others that contradict this? Can anyone confirm this? I read in Magic Johnson's biography that when Johnson was a rookie he had to partner up to be like a servant for a veteran so he got Kareem and Kareem was supposedly a devout muslim so, when Magic had to go get hot dogs or something with meat for Kareem, he had to MAKE 100% sure that they were not pork. ------------------ Francis out top, 9 seconds on the clock, he gives a no look pass to Cuttino Mobley, 4 seconds left, Mobley passes to an open Langhi in the corner with 1 second left! Here's some more on Ramadan: Every year in the month of Ramadan, all Muslims fast from dawn until sundown, abstaining from food, drink, and sexual relations. Although the fast is beneficial to health, it is regarded principally as a method of spiritual self-purification. By cutting oneself off from worldly comforts, even for a short time, a fasting person gains true sympathy with those who go hungry, as well as growth in his or her spiritual life. ------------------ Francis out top, 9 seconds on the clock, he gives a no look pass to Cuttino Mobley, 4 seconds left, Mobley passes to an open Langhi in the corner with 1 second left! So what happens if a drip of sweat was to somehow land in his mouth??? That against his religion too??? ------------------ Miggidy Markell says: 1. Eastcoast is da sh*t 2. Rockets rule 3. miggidy: its a very practical concept, if something like that happens you cant control its alright. if youre rinsing your mouth and you accidently swallow some water, its ok. if you're fasting and you accidently eat something w/o realizing it, EVEN THAT is alright (provided you stop as soon as you realize you're fasting). ------------------ people who are related dont have to look alike. my mom and dad dont resemble each other at all
Ok, lemme clear it up for everyone... The point is not to have pleasure, to withstand it...why?? To know the value of what u have, u'll appreciate it more later...AND, to learn patience.....Now, the IV thing is definitely a NO NO.... Now, regarding the stuffing urself, ur not allowed to STUFF urself through all of ramadan....Before 5:30am, u can eat some to be able to go through the fasting without being TOO hungry...and after the fasting, ur STILL not allowed to stuff urself, U eat just enough to fulfill the hunger.... So, Hakeem will be, if the game times are appropriate, OK...BUT, still, undoubtedly, he will be at least a LITTLE weaker....Now Colier's out Cato's out TROUBLE! And by the way, I didn't know there were so many muslims on this board.... One more thing I wanted to know is, a few years back, I heard Hakeem nearly kicked some guy's ass cause the guy said something about Muslims and 10 ppl had to hold Hakeem back....Anyone know what I'm talking about? Fill me in? ------------------
On the issue of why Ramadan used to be discussed in February and now it is late November.... Ramadan shifts backwards 10 days each yr b/c the Muslim calendar is different from the caldenar we follow. Thus, sometime in the future, Ramadan would coincide with the NBA Finals. This yr it started Nov 27, next yr it will start around Nov 17, then the yr after that it will be around Nov 7. It will be many yrs before it shifts back to June, but when it does, the fasting time becomes longer since the time between sunrise and sunset is longer. Right now, the fasting time is roughly 12 hrs, when Ramadan falls in the summer, the sun does not set till around 8 or 8:30. WizzyWig's info that Hakeem adopted an all year fast is good to hear b/c that would mean he is used to it and it hasnt affected his play in the season thus far. Basically, the year round fast is an optional fasting during 2 days of each wk. Of all Muslims I know, only the most devout adopt that practice. ------------------ Check out the Best Source for Draft Info Draftsource.net
