Wow......thanks guys. I was going to write a goobye thread before I left...I never expected someone would beat me to it. Here's what's what: Starting pay grade of E-4 (Specialist) due to having a degree. $11,000 in cash bonuses Student loan repayment.....this is the primary reason I enlisted. I've got about $25K in loans to pay off. I may as well let the Army do it for me. I plan on going into Officer Candidate School within 2-3 years when most of my debt has been payed off. What else what else....... I was initially going to put my education to use by going in as an Army Broadcast Journalist, but I knew I'd wake up every morning wondering whether I was a 'real' soldier....no disrespect to military journalists, I just knew that was not for me, so I changed over to Field Artillery. I'm a Firefinder/Radar Operator; in english: I'll be the guy directing fire support based on satellite feeds, computer info, and meteorlogical equipment. That and big guns are just cool. Besides, I wanted the chance to avenge my countrymen and fight for something worthwhile. I leave for Basic Training tomorrow (Thursday, 1/31/02) at 5:30am. I'll be out of touch with everyone (even my Princess), with the exception of writing letters, for just over two months during Basic. Then Advanced Individual Training (or AIT...in my case, that's Artillery School) begins when Basic training ends. I should have a good bit more freedom during AIT, but I won't know how much until I get there. I might have computer access, and if I do, I'll be sure to come here first and say hello. I wanted to take a moment to say goodbye to everyone here. CC.net has truly become my digital home in this little corner of the internet. I remember being so worried when MC Mark didn't show up...fighting with people over whether or not Olajuwon should be let go...Achebe and me going at it over the Rebel Flag...talking with Manny and Freak and everyone else about music...and writing a f*cking novel to treeman about what I need to do with my life...calling Glynch names (thanks for that comment, Glynch )...Meeting Jeff and thinking "Wow is this guy putting in alot of work to keep the Rockets in town"...Meeting Jeff and thinking "That dude needs a haircut"...Talking with MrPaige about movies...and talking with Vengeance about unemployment...Jesus, the list goes on. Thanks for letting me in fellas. This site rules, it just plain rules. Thanks Clutch, for this website. I'll be back in touch as soon as I can. I imagine I'll be begging Princess to print out Clutch's recaps to send to me while I'm in Basic.... Thanks again, everyone. Keep my seat warm.
I don't ship to Basic until April 8, but thanks all for the sentiments anyway. Yes, you've all got to put up with me for two more months... Lynus302: Good luck man. Don't ever look the DIs in the eye, and when they tell you to throw that grenade, you throw that damn thing hard and hit the deck... And make sure that the pin is not in your throwing hand. (you'd be surprised how many accidents happen that way) Since we're going the same branch (arty), I'm sure we'll have an opportunity to hook up down the road. Especially if you join a 3rd Army unit like I told you... And remember, WATCH WHERE YOU SEND THOSE ROUNDS!!!
