Most fans in China imo like SF3. even less SF3 bashers there.
Sometimes we too hate Steve's stupid decision making, but in general, most people believe he is an excellent player to play with Yao, and they two can do something really big.

To be honest, maybe most of us love to watch nba game(Rockets game to be more exact) just because of Yao, and come to this forum because of Yao. As Yao has stayed here for nearly two years, we are now falling love with this team, too. If I'm a YOF 1 year ago, I'm now a half YOF fan and as long as Yao stay here I believe I will become a real Rockets fan.

another reason I like here: As an English major, I find reading posts here the only chance I enjoy reading English. BTW, Any one who studys Chinese in this forum?

and a final question: can anyone here be kind enough tell what the often used word "dude" means? I can't find it in the dic.
    does it mean "brother"?

ppl in china might like Francis.... but the commentator definitely doesn't seems to like him much.... I watched a few games downloaded off China's website and it seems to me that the commentators seems to always says good thing bout Yao even when he did somthing wrong but when Francis is having a good game, they will still bash him.....

maybe just the few games I watched... but that's what happen in THAT few games.....

lsqdavid : what do you mean by studying chinese? Major in chinese? or just practically study chinese before?

Well, lots of fans from China are still arguing whether Yao is a better player than Wang Who?. Seems to me like pathetic losers or trolls.

    So ¡°¸¥ÀÏ´ó¡± = "SF3" in Chinese?

so then what does ¡°Ð¡¸¥¡± translate to?

Glyyde: I'd say both. I'm just wondering how popular Chinese is here in Houston. The commdentators of CCTV are the biggst Yao only fans in China now I'd say.

I have got it! dude=guy/man, thanks Clutch Forum! I do appreciate.

No one will think Wang zhizhi is as good as Yao now. but it will be a great help to the national team if he can get back.

"¸¥ÀÏ´ó" has the connotation of " NO. 1 player of the team, the leader". Yao uses the name quite often in his bbs. It shows respect.
more fans would like to use "С¸¥" , which shows intimacy and his small size compared with Yao, is somewhat like "little francise" in English.

Interesting topic. Interesting to see the China/foreign fans point of view on Francis/Yao. Not surprising that the Chinese are the most critical of their own player in Yao. I guess that is the way it is, we are always the most critical towards our family members because we know them so well.

Cultural interaction is a neat thing, ain't it?

They say that in another few years, there'll be more Chinese content online than English. And if you carry these trends out another 25-50 years?

Those of ya with the opportunity (especially you ethnic Chinese), start polishing up your Chinese skills. It's going to pay off; there's nothing better in this world than to be bilingual English/Chinese-fluent.

On the issue of Chinese fans bashing on Yao... I think it's true, I know several older Chinese who call Yao weak and feminine (seriously), and think he's an embarassment.

It seems to be a generational thing. Older, first-generation Chinese-Americans are still insecure about being in this country, and inevitably feel like second-class citizens. They speak English with a thick accent, and are perceived as "foreigners" by everyone they meet. They're very sensitive to supposed stereotypes. Some of these also purposely isolate themselves from the "Chinese", desperately seeking assimilation and acceptance.

I think younger Chinese in the US, whether ABC or first-generation, are more confident... we're fluent in English and comfortable in American society, and we're also representatives of a far more confident, increasingly successful China. We don't mind going to stadiums and screaming for Yao Ming in English and in Chinese, wearing YM-inspired jerseys (I still wear my Shanghai Sharks jersey), and wearing our emotions on our sleeves.

Thank god Yao Ming has made us look good, so far. :)

I agree with you 100% Heech. It's impossible to watch a Rockets game with my dad, ever since Yao came on the team all my dad does is yell at yao to be stronger more aggressive. He's worse than any anti Yao guy around. I dont even think he enjoys the game anymore, Yao pisses him off too much. LOL

Yeah but when Yao starts winning championships, he'll probably be the biggest YOF around. ;)

From what I read in the Chinese BBS, fans over there generally are amazed how atheletic SF is, but displeased with his play decisions. The consensus is pretty much the same as the assessment to SF on this board.

I am a chinese YOF, kind of. :D But some of my chinese friends don't like Yao, most of them are women, Yao is too slow and too hesitating to be their favorite B-ball player. Interesting enough, if they don't like Yao, usually they like SF3. I guess somehow they stereotype NBA players as SF3's type. Maybe Yao is not attrative to female fans across the world.

True that Yao has a lot of pressure on him and the hopes of millions of people riding on him (let's not get carried away with billions - there are many Chinese, I'm sure, who could care less about YM)... but I'm not surprised he hasn't succumbed to the pressure and crumbled.

It comes down to this - game is game, if you have it and work hard, you will succeed to some extent. If you have a smart coach and willing teammates, you can become something very special. This is what fans in China and here (the U.S.) are waiting for in Yao and the Rockets.

The chinese fans that live in the USA and see every game are able to form a more accurate and divergent opinion than their overseas brothers, because they are more experienced with the American way of life and know not to trust as being real, every thing that you see. and hear. ie: we are not so easily conned into holding true an opinion which is only superficial.

From what I read from sina.com, generally, fans like SF3. They call him older brother (the number 1 on the team).

Let's not put it this way. It's more like we can have 1st hand media but they are just having 3rd person media!! So they can't form opinion as a 2nd person. How about that.
