I wasn't referring to the last two years or last ten years. I was talking about now, right now. The only history is the last game, or maybe three pick sixes in a row. Two losses in a row and going to SF on Sunday night. Can the ship be righted? I wouldn't pick the 49ers on a Sunday night to do it. Maybe Schaub will have a career game. Maybe they roll the 49's, I hope so. I just don't feel it. Doesn't mean it won't happen. We will soon find out. I am not talking about your mother, ease up. It's a sports board. The only thing I am entitled to is my opinion, and after following Houston professional football since 1960, going to games (used to live in Houston), buying stuff, cheering my heart out, following the Oilers and Texans through over five decades, I think I can have an opinion on a sports board. And so can you. It's a game, I'm a fan, I think the organization is burning serious daylight, some of us don't have that much left and we want to finally have the champion we have always hoped for. I think we are close, and I think we need QB more mobile and of a different temperament than Schaub. I also think we could use a more aggressive and creative head coach. That is my opinion and I think I am entitled to have it. Hate to see another wasted opportunity.
I don't understand the nostalgia for the "Schaub of old." In the 3 years he started all 16 regular season games, he threw a combined 39 INTs.
I think it's safe to say that if you compare Schaub's tape from recent games with tape from 2011, there's a HUGE difference. He's just not the same player. Now, there can be two reasons for this. One is that he's just not as good anymore. In which case, bringing up past success is pointless. The other is that his surrounding players aren't that good anymore. In which case, given the Texans cap situation, it's not likely going to get better. If Schaub requires a top 5 defense, top 5 running game, top 5 offensive line to succeed, then he won't succeed because the Texans will never have that again. The Texans this year have a top 5 defense and an average if not above average running game and only .500. Schaub's teammates aren't the issue here.
During his career as a Texan not including this year he has 114 TD's and 64 INT's. As I stated in his last ten games he has 11 TD's to 11 INT's. So yes, he's not playing like the Schaub of old.
As a born and raised Houstonian (and still here), I have to add a hearty "Hear, hear". The long history of ineptitude has taken more than its toll on those of us who harbor hope for the teams we've invested ourselves in. Fifty-three years of pro football is a long time to wait for a championship. My grandfather died at 98. But the year before, he got to live to see the Houston baseball team (going back to the minor league days) he followed through thick and thin finally play in the World Series. I'm not sure I have the same confidence that we will see a Super Bowl with THIS coach and/or THIS quarterback. Not even if I lived to be 98.
31YO JOHN ELWAY 12-4 | 54% | 3253YDS | 13TD | 12INT MATT SCHAUB 12-4 | 64% | 4008YDS | 22TD | 12INT 32YO THROUGH 4 GAMES JOHN ELWAY 3-1 | 51% | 573YDS | 2TD | 4INT MATT SCHAUB 2-2 | 66% | 1193YDS | 8TD | 6INT 33YO JOHN ELWAY 9-7 | 63% | 4030YDS | 25TD | 10INT MATT SCHAUB TBD If we only went by statistics...Matt Schaub is better than John Elway.
John Elway's stats will never look that great because he was stuck under a poor offensive system with Dan Reeves. A fairer statistical comparison between Elway and Schaub would be when Kubiak was their offensive coordinator/QB Coach between 95-02, and my how those stats changed. John Elway 1995 - 26 TD 14 INT 1996 - 26 TD 14 INT 1997 - 27 TD 11 INT 1998 - 22 TD 10 INT
And to add to that, Elway played in an era where the rules didn't greatly favor the receivers and QBs. Oh, and in terms of mobility, Elway had 737 yards and 7 TD runs in those 4 seasons. Schaub the past 4 years, 33 yards and 2 TDs. What's ironic is that despite all the cliches about Schaub being the "perfect system QB". The truth is the most successful QB in the Shannahan/Kubiak system was an old John Elway. And Elway was both very mobile and very much a downfield passer even in his last years. Also, the 2nd most successful QB in that system was Jake Plummer, a notoriously not-so-accurate QB with famous snake-like escapability. While Schaub's most apt comp in terms of style, Brian Greise, was only somewhat successful before an injury derailing his career. Sounds familiar?
Statistically, Josh Freeman last year would have been one of the most prolific quarterbacks in the league back in 2003. Different world now.
Unleash the dragon in Case Keenum or even TJ. Schaub goes wild and cries under pressure. It's not safe for us Texans fans. I don't want thousands of heart attacks and strokes due to Schaub's lack of courage to be a winner. Sigh... last weeks loss was detrimental to my health.
Speaking of the Schaub of old, I was re watching a YouTube video I made of Schaub a few years back and he made multiple plays on his feet. In the 09/10 and 10/11 season Schaub was in no means a scrambling QB but he had decent footwork in the pocket and could roll out/step up and avoid pressure to extend the play and find another receiver <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/cSzkqchFbhM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Of course not.... But being rational and realistic is an entirely different matter. There's no elite QB walking through that door or sitting on our sidelines. I blame this more on Kubiak and this should absolutely be his last season unless we get to the AFC champioship and/or SB. This is Kubiak's guy and system, it will be time to show him the door after this season if we can't improve.
thats a good vid, it shows Schaub had some mobility, and didnt enter into panic mode, like the previous games.
Why do people actually think Case Keenum and TJ Yates can be starters? Yates was not that great when he played, and Keenum doesn't look special. They both played well against PRESEASON defense. The same kind of defense that makes BJ Daniels over in 49ers look like Russell Wilson 2.0 (Who they just cut).
