How can it be scientifically wrong? There's no science that says it is wrong? Most science says there's a genetic reason and pattern for it. That being the case, it means that there was a reason homosexuality existed in terms of helping with the survival of the human species. It could be that by having homosexuals, there were men who didn't compete with other men for women and could serve other purposes that were needed in an evolving social group that was very keen on survival. Of course, if you believe in the bible, you might not accept evolution, which is a whole different can of worms for ya. I think you need to seperate religion and politics. Liberalism is not anti-Bible. Nor are republicans the owner of Christ. If you are worried about the countries direction, you should note that we've been following a conservative agenda for the past 8 years, not a liberal one, and our union is at it's weakest point since 1980. At least in my opinion. As a moderate, I don't think politics is the core play here. It isn't about abortion or gay marriage - and in fact many conservatives are beginning to see this and emphazing more important issues. It's not about god in school either. We have a problem in the sense that to compete on the global stage we need educated and free thinking individuals....we need our best and brightest. But we're losing so many to teenage pregnency, disillusionment, poor education, poor family structure, poverty, and a culture that places being able to throw a football or dunk a basketball, or sing well on tv over getting an education. Parents who do care seem to care about their own glory instead of the long term benefits of their children. What happened to the focus on school? The focus on competiting with the world? Not just in track meets but in the class rooms. Where is the desire to innovate? To me, we need more liberal thinking, not in political stances, but in challenging the frameworks of the past and trying to find new ways to grow our national identity. We need to teach kids to stop accepting and to start exploring and learning. There's a mental malaise going on and that's what is going to be our doom.
Damn this thread is awesome. I wanted to be a part of it. I only saw a few Righties jump in on this thread, and it's the good ones that I like to read.
I'm going to say something that i've always wanted to say... It's the parents' fault... I grew up in a family where my father was a Christian who believed in abortion and was very cynical about anything in the Bible, even though he was very knowledgeable of it. My mother was much less knowledgeable but was in church all the time and my uncle makes comic books about angels. I wouldn't consider myself spiritually enlightened but it was obvious that being a drone spouting whatever momma believes wasn't going to cut it. I blame the parents who don't make it obvious that to find God you actually have to search.
To a certain extent, I agree. But parents like your mother and mine (a true christian zealot) are just products of a system intentionally dictating ignorance and compartmentalization as righteousness. That's not meant to be insulting - it's just the matter-of-fact truth regarding the more hardcore groups usually known as fundamentalists.
It might be my innate desire to root for the underdog but I kind of feel bad for the original poster. You started out stating your concern for where the country is going but before you start being concerned about the country I think you need to take a harder look at what this country is and what its about. Believe it or not we are engaged in a small scale exercise in living out one of the ideals of this country which is the free exchange of ideas. Understandably you are feeling upset that people are pushing back at you but this is to be expected in that we live in a pluralistic society. Further this is what makes our country strong is that we do have a diversity of thought and opinion as opposed to other countries. You have stated you will put God ahead of country. That is fine that you hold that but at the same point then you have to ask yourself does that mean that your view of God is in opposition to what this country is? Does your belief in a literalist Biblical view conflict with the idea of freedom?
I haven't read the thread, but I do want to answer the original question. I'm a Liberal and Democrat because I was a kid in East Texas during the 60's and the Democratic Party was right on Civil Rights and had the courage to do something about it even though it ripped their national coalition apart. I'm a Democrat because my grandfather told me stories of the Great Depression and how the Democratic Party had the courage to do something about it. I'm a Democrat because my other grandfather fought in WWII and Democrats were thankfully in charge and right on the strategy. I'm a Democrat because I abhor totalitarianism and the Democratic Party set the basic strategy for the Cold War. I'm a Democrat because I value equality for all over the pursuit of happiness for a few. I'm a Democrat because my party did something about working conditions and child labor and food safety and wilderness and a host of other things that are important to me. I'm a Democrat because Democrats were ultimately right about Vietnam and Watergate. I'm a Democrat because I think the choice belongs with the woman... I don't like the idea of abortion, but it is part of the human element and other options are much less preferable. I'm a Democrat because I see how stupid and destructive this current administration is to the basic values of this country like individual freedoms, the morality of torture, the checks and balances built into our Constitutional system, the deliberate destruction of the first and greatest middle-class superpower in history. I'm a Democrat because I don't believe the bulk of the blame for the Katrina response rests with a mayor and a governor of a small state. I'm a Democrat because I believe in the philosophy of our Founding Fathers... that war is bad for a Democracy and bad for America and they should be entered into only when absolutely necessary. I'm a Dem because I hate seeing this administration piss away a century of foreign policy effort by both parties. I'm a Democrat because the God I believe in encourages charity and giving and tolerance and understanding... and the use of the brain that He gave us.
As far as the bible is concerned, if Jesus spoke it then I believe it. If some other @sshole wrote it then I don't acknowledge it even if it is written in the Bible. I also love this thread so much that it earned me a new sig!
1. I'll "give you" homosexual marriage if you "give me" No Abortion, okay?! 2. What should we have done/do with all the women who had abortions prior to Roe v. Wade? Arrest them, Mr. One Set of Laws!!!!!!!
What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then ... we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal." -JFK, [September 14, 1960]
