Most likely they'd say "yeah, probably the Lakers will win it all.. but I'm not sure, Cleveland is tough too. Anyways we'd like it to be us, so we're going to work our hardest to get there." For some reason the omission of that last part (which McGrady can't even say... because he's not on the court) has you guys in a huge tizzy. Easily offended, i'd say.
Kinda goes without saying don't you think? You would have to be really idiotic to ask a Rockets player, "Is your goal to win a championship?" No **** sherlock... That is the point of saying it. You NEVER want your opponents to sense weakness. When you are on the court, you NEVER, EVER let your man know that you are tired or defeated. If the Lakers sense weakness, they will destroy us. If we come out confident and REALLY BELIEVE we can win, anything can happen...
Just because Yao mentions the first round in those statements does not mean he won't be thinking about beating the Lakers if he were to reach the 2nd round. If he is at the 2nd round, he isn't thinking about the WCF ... etc. That is how he is. You should know by now that Yao takes things one step at a time. So stop twisting his words to make it sound like anything McGrady said.

This is exactly my point. THE ROCKETS WERE NEVER METIONED IN THE QUESTION! If the reporter asked, "What do you think of the matchup between the Rockets and Lakers?" Maybe, you will hear that bs political answer like "We will give them a tough time, blah blah." You guys automatically assume that we'll be in the next round to match up against with the Lakers to begin and that's the problem. This is why we haven't gotten past the first round for so long. We think so highly of ourselves and have no healthy respect for the opponent... Here's what doesn't make sense: When Tmac assumes that he's gotten past the first round (ie against Detroit when they were up 3-1 in 2003) and they don't make it people criticize him for being overconfident. When he does not mention the Rockets to go all the way then people criticize him for having no confidence in this team...which one is it??
No way anyone on the Rockets would say that. NO WAY. Even if they thought it, they would NEVER give hint of weakness at this point in the playoffs... They might say "The Lakers are a great team", but that is as far as it goes...

Hey, don't get me wrong, I agree with the mentality. This kind of goes back to the "OMFG DONT MAKE THREADS ABOUT THE LAKERS BEFORE WE BEAT THE BLAZERS". Superstition. They can answer a question honestly and still go out and kick ass. Oh well, we'll agree to disagree again.
I don't know, I've only talked to the media once in my life, and it was a tough situation to be in. They asked a question, and I just started saying stuff. Words started rolling out of my mouth without even thinking. Would I have chosen the Lakers over the Rockets, probably not, but I'm not going to get mad at Tracy for doing it. I mean, he also said that LeBron James is the best player in the game... why aren't people mad at him for not saying himself? Or Yao Ming? Or anybody on the Rockets? Man, what a horrible teammate. He also said LeBron James was going to win the MVP... why aren't people getting mad at him for not giving Yao Ming credit? I mean, Yao is his teammate, right? I can tell you why I'm not getting mad at those... because I DON'T CARE. Maybe some of you other guys should give that a shot.

BTW, it's not like he is rooting against the Rockets. He just gave his opinion to the question. If the guy would have asked, "Who are you rooting for in a Lakers-Rockets series?" and Tracy would have answered with the Lakers... you bet your ass I would have been mad. He was asked who he thinks is going to win. The Rockets haven't been out of the first round in over 10 years. They had just had a heartbreaking loss to the Mavs (this interview was done on Friday, you know), and he said the Lakers. Hell, I would be willing to bet that if those guys were to ask Tracy that same question today (or yesterday) he probably would have given the Rockets some credit.
I forget, though... these are the boards that absolutely flip when Charles F'n Barkley says we might not win it all.... I seem to have forgotten where I was. The only thing I get out of this is that Tracy McGrady is in summer vacation and he answered like he was. It reminds me of his answers to interviews done weeks after getting tossed out of the first round. Thing is his teammates are still in the race and they are all that matter to me right now.
