i don't agree with blake that tmac had even a good game. i thought he had a "decent" game considering how pathetic he started. he did have 19 pts and 9 assists. that's pretty much a double double. i also believe his defensive intensity in that game could be much much better. but i thought he played a part in us winning the game. down the stretch in the 4th, without tmac, we lose right there. when adelman used the screens and curls to bring tmac into the paint, he got 4 STRAIGHT ASSISTS to landry and yao as we were exchanging baskets with the pacers. like i said, tmac could get better with the offense in the first 3 quarters. but when he has been back, i thought our offense in the 4th has improved tremendously. he just needs to integrate himself more in the first 3 quarters and then take over in the 4th. and on defense, it's only his intensity. as u saw on the last play, he was keyed in on stopping dunleavy. he'll get there.
you are really grasping at straws here. everyone agrees with crediting him when the double team he passes out of creates the open shot. He didn't make any bad passes out of the double, and if he gets a TO, it counts against him I'm not a huge TMac fan and that was an objective analysis of ONE GAME. Sorry that the results were not what you wanted. For the LAST TIME...if Yao gets the ball in the post and Rafer's man runs to double Yao, and Yao kicks it out to Rafer, and Shane's man has slid over to cover Rafer (called a defensive rotation) and Rafer immediately, without dribbling or creating, passes it to an open Battier...Yao's double created the opening and his proper rotational pass, along with Alston's immediate pass to Shane, allowed to player to shoot.
I guess people don't uderstand that this is the nba. U have to take and make contested shot over 50% of the time. Was those baseline jumpers by dream uncontested? No. When Kobe is playing, u think he gets uncontested shots? The star players always take shots with a hand in their face unless its a blown assignment. Against good defensive teams, they'll give up shot from 23'9 as opposed to one from 17ft. It really puzzling sometimes and this damn system.
with dream, he WANTS to take uncontested/tough shots. that just showed how great he was. like kenny smith said, "when defenders force dream into taking those baseline fallaways, they think to themselves, 'i got you hakeem,' but to hakeem, he just smiles and drills it. it's an easy shot for him."
Its not the results I care about...its the procedure. By your logic, any pass he makes out of the double team is a good play. In my opinion, you're being a little too generous with your "good play" recognitions. Also, given your logic, its impossible for anyone who draws double teams to have a bad game.
Sorry, but your analysis was far from objective. If you wanted to make it objective, you would've factored in my comments. Keep in mind...I'm not saying he had a bad game. I'm saying his game wasnt as good as your stats imply.
If pass leads to bucket, good play. If pass leads to missed shot, neutral. If pass gets stolen, bad play. Seems pretty cut and dry. And the reason a missed "good shot" is not the same as a missed "bad shot" is the thought process before the shot. Decision making. Deciding to take a good shot is a good decision. Deciding to take a bad shot is a bad decision. For the first time in a long time that I can remember, T-Mac didnt make a bad decision on a 3 point shot. Why is it so hard to see that offensively McGrady made strides this game in the direction we as fans are wanting him to go. He took mostly good shots and drives, made his FTs, and made great passes when the opportunity presented itself.
It was objective. It was about the DECISIONs T-Mac made. When you make a decision, you dont know how it will turn out. But you can determine if the decision was the right one by the set of circumstances under which the decision is made. Wide open catch n shoot? Good decision. Double comes, pass to open man. Good decision. Man overplays you, drive by him to the lane. Good decision. Man overplays you, take tough contested J. Bad decision. Try to beat double team solo and turn it over. Bad decision.
Yes, that scenario you described is cut and dry. But we're talking about a pass that leads to another pass that leads to a bucket. I didnt say he had a bad game. On the contrary, I said he had a good game...just not as good as Blake's "stats" might indicate.
The strides comment was for those who are making the same tired arguments that T-Mac is ball hogging or taking bad Js or whatever. We saw things this game from T-Mac that we hadn't seen much before. How often does Yao throw it out to the top of the key for a T-Mac 3?? I'm just glad it wasnt Bonzi up top there. Also, I think going 6 for 19 is going to bring your overall score down a bit. Sure he got fouled with no call a few times, but his game would have been better if the ball went in a few more times.
It wasnt objective. Theres so many scenarios where tmac could get a "good play" yet only a few where he could get a "bad play". I'm sure if you wanted, you could think of at least 5 other scenarios that were ignored that should've been defined as a "bad play".
The ones I listed were the most common offensive situations T-Mac is in. Since we dont know the offense that well and each player's responsibility we cant say if T-Mac was in the wrong spot when he should have been elsewhere or didnt make a proper cut. Hmm...lemme try. Get the ball up top and yo-yo the shotclock down and chunk a bad 3 pointer. Bad.(dont remember this one yesterday) Tricky pass that gets stolen. Bad.(dont remember this yesterday) Seen this once: Get the ball at halfcourt with 5 seconds to go in the first half only to yo-yo and not get any kind of shot up. BAD! I'm thinking......... Enlighten me.
No. GOD you are frustrating. The plays WHERE I GAVE HIM CREDIT where when his double team led to another quick pass and an open shot. If he was double teamed, passed out of it, and the recipient held the ball or the play just kept running, I DID NOT GIVE HIM CREDIT. Man, you are dense
If an open shot from 15 feet doesn't go in is it a "bad play"? I'd say that you have to take the open shot, no matter what, and just live (or die) with the consequences. On the other hand, a contested jumper where somebody's in your face is probably not a desirable shot, even if it happens to go in.
If the long jumper is catch n shoot, yes. I think if he makes a bad shot, then it moves up to neutral. If missing a good shot brings it from good to neutral, then making a bad one should take it from bad to neutral. Sounds reasonable.
If you are 1 on 1, then chances are there aren't. If you are doubled, then certainly someone is open. Although in order to have a catch n shoot situation you will have to be pretty open which means either no man guarding you or someone who is pretty far off of you.
This thread is way off the mark. The problem with TM is not with his offense, but at the other end of the court. Look at the guy that he guarded: fgm-a 3pm-a ftm-a +/- off def tot ast pf st to bs ba pts D.Granger 7-20 3-6 5-5 -1 2 4 6 2 3 2 1 0 0 22 Here is TM's: T.McGrady 6-19 3-6 4-4 +6 0 5 5 9 2 3 2 0 0 19 I am not saying that TM was dominated, but obviously Granger's performance is NOT worse (if not better) than TM. As a player of 20M per year, fans expect him to dominate the counterpart night in and night out. Apparently TM didn't meet that expectation last night. And that is one of the main reasons that we had a hard time last night. As for TM's offense, consistence is still the problem and now a new issue is how to integrate his offense into this system. But a player like TM will eventually find a way. When you are not feeling it, play some defense!
There is a different thread if you want to argue T-Mac's defensive plays yesterday. This is for those who say T-Mac is a cancer and not doing things to help the team win.
