I said this idea a couple of years ago. But now i realized that it is not a good idea. Tmac like isolated play too much. When he controlled balls on high key, the team stopped running and he made turnover easily.

If there were a third scorer packing outside efficiently, than Tmac could be an effecient part-time passer. Otherwise, physically he can't afford both passing and scoring job. So the major problem is still the third scorer. I said a couple of years ago, Rockets should require Ron when his price is the lowest. SF3 can be the man if he can come back. Bonzi could be the man if he's in his top shape. But nothing happened.

Rockets just need an outside shooter/slasher to dominate the league when both yao/Tmac are healthy.

You do know he already does it right?

Rafer can make plays but often times Tmac is the primary playmaker. He is considered a SG because that's were he's played all his career like Tim Duncan, Amare Stoudemire, Lebron James and Shawn Marion. Look at lebron, his work load is similar to Tmac's they are both the PG's in the offense. If anything Adleman tried to change that this season, until he realized that our other players' offense sucks and he reincorporated him as the PG.

Basically, what we're missing is a guy who can score to play with him and it may "look" like he is making more plays when he is really just getting more assists.

You think Tmac has an empty tank now?

It always baffles me that people will point out how valuable Battier is because he relieves Tracy of having to guard the Kobes, Wades of the world, then suggest that he bring the ball up the court.

The comparison to Magic is obviously the romantic aspect of this suggestion, but Tracy is far from the passer or dribbler that Magic was. Our team also has a great dribbler starting PG.

I dont think that would work becasue its not what this team needs, I mean we could try it but I dont think we would win many games. We need Tracy to be a scorer for us to be a great team.

Now if somehow we could get another scorer on this team which is not likey then I think maybe it might work, but I'm still not too sure.

JVG just put the ball into T-Mac's hands and said, ok now make plays. Create abnd score.

I think Adelman is trying to change it and he was doing that in the 1st year. Tracy is a great passer and he usually makes the game easier for other players but Adelman at least tried to use him more as a scorer, he tried to use him off the ball more.

The only problem is that we need to have a good playmaker who can creat for McGrady, Yao and other players.

    1. JVG got fired. His thoughts about how the Rockets play ball no longer matter.

    2. Sure TMac can pass the ball well, but his primary role is still to score points. Yao can also pass the ball extremely well, and he also has great court vision. But Yao is effective because he can score points and therefore he draws double teams, and then he uses his great passing abilities to pass the ball to open shooters i.e. Shane Battier. The best way to utilize TMac's passing ability is similar to Yao. Have TMac penetrate and draw double teams, then use his great passing abilities to kick the ball out to open shooters.

    3. Rafer Alston is already a great point guard. There is no reason why we need TMac to play point.

NO, I never said Tmac has an empty tank now, but its certainly as full as it once was.
And I also said Tmac could be Magic, I said he could be a poor man's Magic. Anyone who is over 6-9 and averages 6+ assists per game is bound to draw some comparisons to Magic.

Yea T-MAC would do awesome at the PG, but who is going to score? Luther Head? ROFL this would be a good idea if we had a decent SF

This is called the LeeDDGater theory. Although I didn't bring it as a original, my response put my name 1st :D . Basically what the op is saying is what we have been on board with. Actually DD who I disagree with a lot has been on board with this along time. Gater has been screaming the ideal player, and I'm just wrapping it up. In fact DD has called t-mac pippen v.2. Basically, tracy strengths at this point eliminates the true pg. His size, passing, and creativity eliminates the true pg. He is a upgraded version of pippen. The only difference is he can still light u up. At this stage and his ball domination, tracy controls the flow of the game. That's cool since he such a great decision maker. Tracy for the next few yrs can be 19ppg 6rebs and 8asst if you surround the team right and is committed to the structure. Now I've got that out the way, lets try to make this work.

The idea is getting a sg that's trapped in a pg body. This guy is different because he has to guard pg's, shoot and score with or without the ball and can at least start the offense. The 2 players I can come up with are Ben Gordon and Monte Ellis. Both are undersized 2 guards that are score. Gordon is bigger and a little stronger while monte is quicker. Both players fit the bill. Why? Because both can at least get u into the half court set. Which means dribble the ball up and give it to tracy. Both can play the peja role. Which mean coming off down and staggered screens and either pop the j or put the ball on the floor and get to the rack. Both are quick enough to guard pgs. I would be opposed to the idea as long as the team is committed and the guy alongside or backing up tracy can do some of the same things. So say u get gordon or ellis (i highly doubt they can get ellis), then they guy backing tracy up or playing along side should be similar like a childress or salmons. Also when u make this transformation, the team needs bigger atheletes at the 4 and backup 5. The action off those down and staggered screens also open up backdoor lobs. Its a good idea, plus if it doesn't work, in 2 yrs the team can make a run at James and still keep the same theory working, but with a better player.

I don't think this will solve our problem. We need another playmaker, and switching Tmac's position won't help.

I think t-mac would be good in a Magic role if we had someone like artest at the 3 and a quick defender at the 2 to guard the pg's on d. Someone like Raja Bell could guard the points. Of course, we could rotate rafer in if the chris pauls of the world are lighting him up. I really don't think T-Mac's offense will get back to shape, i think its all down from here. He showed he can score whenever he wants to attack(even if he doesn't get respect from the refs). But, his mid range and long range is just flat and terrible now. Its seriously sad. This dude had the best mid rang jumper in the league. To see him like this is just wow. But, c'mon though, T-mac will never attack non-stop even if he had Yao and Artest taking the scoring load off his shoulders.

I'm not saying he doesn't have to necessarily play the PG position strictly-which means he has to guard the opposing team's point guard. I'm just saying that he should focus on being a facilitator first, and scorer second. Thats why I said in order to do this, we have to trade Rafer + X for a reliable two guard that is also quick-say someone in a Monta Ellis mode. Or we could trade up in the draft and get player like Chase Budinger who can hit the open shot, etc. This way , I think, Tmac doesn't have the pressure of scoring and shooting excessively, he can just play according to what the defense gives him.

    What would you rather have?
    24 points 42% 6 assists
    or
    22-24 points 45% 7-8 assists?

The thread should just be locked honestly. You can't just stick Tmac at PG. It doesn't work like that.

I don't know why some people think this is such a crazy idea. He was THE PG under JVG's offense. Rafer Alston was the SG who brings the ball up past half court.

Do you want Rafer as your SG or someone else who can shoot more consistently? The fact is, when you have McGrady on your team, your PG is in fact a semi-SG.

The only negative is on defense. You don't want McGrady to chase PGs on defense or he will get worn out real fast. So like leebigez suggested, you want a fast SG who can shoot to play alongside him.

You're right. I got a bit too excited.

But then again, I think with Yao and TMac we don't really need a "great" point guard, just someone who can get them the ball and shoot the open shot. I think Rafer does a decent job at that.
