Or it could be that they are rooting for players, and don't really care what happens with Bud Adams. 99% of sports fans could care less about the owners.
I rooted for Bud when the Oilers were here- he brought in Bum, drafted Earl and paid out of the wazzoo for Moon- I stopped rooting for Bud when they left. Period But Bud was hated by the media and blamed for stuff..... Bud wanted a new stadium- that was the trend, the remodel should have never happened especially shopping us with Jacksonville, but the request or demand for the new stadium was legit, I blame the then mayor who couldn't stand Bud for the Oilers leaving. Let's don't rehash that thing, sorry bout that.
Excellent! Unfortunately for McNair, his target market includes a big chunk of those people, so I don't think he can really market that way.
You never draft a D-lineman number 1....never....maybe at 3 or 4, but not at 1..... QBs & RBs.....at 1......especially when Young and Bush are there. DD
True. But clearly looking at this forum, those that did STILL don't seem to care much either way about the team owners. They care about being entertained and having an enjoyable team to follow. If the Rockets win an NBA title, will you be really excited that Les Alexander is getting another championship? When you root for the Rockets, are you thinking "I hope Les gets another win!"?
You know, I really don't hate the titans as much as I did when they first left. Once we got a team of our own, I just considered the titans as another team. Finally when McNair left (the last old Oiler) I've totally moved on. Them leaving is ancient history. Maybe it would be different if they had kept the old name and uniforms. I will root against the titans on Sunday, but only because they are the team the Texans are playing. I'm going to stick with the Texans because it will be that much sweeter when we finally start winning. I won't have to jump back on their bandwagon like a lot of people will have to do.
I certainly care about that as well. I wish the Texans were not the crappy franchise they are. That doesn't mean I go and root for the team that was moved from Houston by a greedy owner, especially against the new Houston team. If they were the Louisville Rockets, you're damned right I'd be rooting against Les Alexander. However, the analogy is not a good one. The only time anyone cares about the owners is when they move your team and steal your history. Or when those don't feel that they're spending enough money on the team.
I still can't see how people aren't sure who to root for. If you are a Houston fan....root for the HOUSTON TEAM.....otherwise.....shooooo. I'm all for Houston and rooting for the hometown team. GO TEXANS.
But given the choice of rooting for a player they love or an owner they hate, most will pick the player. The player is the one on the field they see. They aren't going to turn on him simply because way upstairs in a booth somewhere there's a guy they don't like. Fans root for the players - that's what connects them to their team. The owners are just a background piece, hated or not.
I've never understood what's so bad about "bandwagon" fans. The whole point of sports is entertainment. If people can find a way to maximize their entertainment and minimize their frustration, why is that a bad thing? Why do people have to be miserable for years to earn some kind of badge of honor? I don't think casual sports fans really care if they were on the bandwagon from the start or not. They'll be enjoying the winning just like you will.
People have the right to root for who ever they want to for whatever reasons they choose. Personally, I think pro sports teams represent the city they play for. I've lived in Houston all my life and I'm proud to say that. That's why I pull for only Houston teams, win or lose. I think if you stick with a team through the bad times, it makes the good times that much sweeter. It just means more. Ask Red Sox fans. Doesn't mean I won't get PISSED when we suck. I'm a fan, not a cheerleader. But I won't jump ship. That's just me. I remember when the Rockets won their championships. I couldn't get a good spot for the parade downtown and I was just pissed off because probably about 80% of the people there (who had better spots than me) didn't even know (or care) who played for the Rockets 2 years earlier. It's just a pet peeve of mine.
but don't you feel it's different with the texans. this isn't your boyhood team that you were born into that FINALLY WON IT!!! like it was with the Rockets...or with the Red Sox for others. i mean, the Red Sox?? how is that even comparable?? that team was winning titles for Boston in 1918....the Texans have been around 5 years. maybe it's a character flaw i have...but i just don't feel for the texans anything remotely close to what i feel for the rockets and the astros. those teams are part of me...the texans aren't. maybe one day they will be. i'm sure they will be for my kids. but they're not there yet. similar to the way my dad doesn't feel the same thing for the houston pro sports teams that I do...because he grew up in a Houston with no pro sports at all.
