the history of the texans in this city make the situation incomparable to me. i know we've talked about this before...but there is no way you can expect the same kind of allegiance to the texans that you might expect with regard to the astros or rockets. it's just not the same thing. there are few bigger homers than me....and i'm seriously torn.

As far as comparisons go, this is definitely more applicable.

At this point you root for a loss. The higher we pick the higher the probability someone wants to trade. This team needs the extra picks.

Plus, VY having a great game puts another nail in the coffin in Casserlys carreer. No team should ever suffer the indignity of having casserly as a GM.

It's not about the allegiance to the Texans or fans being upset because of who we picked or passed up in the draft. It's about rooting for a team owned by the guy who ripped the team we grew up with away from us. If you were never an Oilers fan, I don't care who you root for on Sunday and MadMax's argument makes sense. But if you grew up an Oilers fan, I cannot fathom how in the world you could root for the Titans because of one player. Like I said, you would never hear a Cleveland Browns fan root for the Ravens just because they took Troy Smith, especially to beat the hometown team. That's why Houston sports fans suck. They can be betrayed and have memories ripped from them by some greedy b*stard, yet still contemplate rooting for that guy's team to be successful. Downright sickening.*

*Please note this is all in the context of sports, not really anything important.

    GO TITANS!!

    The Texans suck

A I am a fan of every other houston team, but I am not able to root for the Texans. They are just a horribly run organization and the team is very boring to watch.

It has nothing to do with the Oilers. It has to do with the Texans being one of the worst franchises in all sports.

Then don't root for anyone. If you grew up an Oilers fan and you're now rooting for the Titans against the hometown team, you suck.

And on top of that, I don't even want to discuss the Texans with those of you rooting for the Titans this weekend. Why would I want to discuss my team with people who don't care about it?

i'm telling you, if this thing goes the way I think it might on Sunday...the Texans are gonna make the old Oilers look good, from a management perspective. as ric said, this could get real ugly, real quick.

Threads like this will be fun to look back in a few years or however long it takes for the Texans to become a great team.

All franchises have their ups and downs. Its been 95% downs but it wont be that way forever.

I bet thats when people will "get into" the Texans.

I don't disagree with that. It doesn't mean you root for the guy who moved the team you spent your childhood rooting for every Sunday.

Thank God (literally) that Ralph Sampson didn't stop us from drafting Hakeem the Dream Olajuwon!

    Let's see....

2-14 expansion team (and worse off than when they started)
    coach known for developing QB's
hometown hero, superstar college QB led the nation in passing, wins national championship and is MVP of game- proven winner, leader and playmaker-surprises everyone and declares he's coming out as a junior
    Texans have #1 pick.

No problem we have the perfect coach to develop one of the best prospects to come out since P Manning- VY

And with the first pick the Houston Texans select- Vince Young UT

WOW- I'm charged up, how about the rest of the city!

    NOT!

Once VY declared I lost interest in DC

I am having trouble getting my DC interest renewed. :(

So, you're rooting for the Texans this week? Becuase if you're not, you're basically rooting for Bud Adams. That's what everyone is doing when they root for the Titans. If they're successful, guess what? The owner is as well.

I'm going to the game Sunday and while I can't bring myself to root for anything Titan Vince notwithstanding, I am prepared to unleash a chorus of boos until my throat bleeds on David freakin Carr.

Rooting for Vince does nothing for me, I wish him no harm but I feel good when Houston teams do well and my Titan hate far outweighs any Vince Young infatuation. He was an amazing player at UT but that is where he it ends for me, I will despise all that is Bud Adams until the day I die.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! Cry me a river drama queen. I never said anything about rooting for anyone, I was just talking strictly about the respective situations of the two teams.

It's basic marketing. You have to hook people into your product. That doesn't necessarily mean winning, but you have to connect with the fans - and the Texans have done a terrible job of that across the board. There are a lot of ways to do it - personalities, winning, excitement, etc. But instead, they have a bad, boring, ugly product with no personalities that people want to root for.

An example is the NBA. You could play an ugly style of basketball, but if the team is winning, fans will support the team. Or you could play an exciting but mediocre brand of basketball, but people will still come to see them because it's enjoyable. If you are both boring and lose a lot, you lose your fans.

With the Texans, it's not enjoyable to be a fan for a lot of people. The team sucks. They play like they are scared (3 yard passes, etc), so it's not fun to watch. They have a habit of being ridiculously un-clutch, so there's no excitement there. And the "face" of the franchise is terrible, so you can't even be excited to root for the individuals.

Until the Texans reach their fan base with a better product, you can except this to continue. And it has *nothing* to do with Houston - it's basic human psychology and marketing. Fans follow sports to be entertained. If you're not entertaining them, don't expect the fans to stick around.
