The Texans have done a good job turning around the team. I am happy with that.. Now I wouldn't say they are in as good of position short term and long term as the Titans (bunch of young talent and best cap figure), but not many are. Of course I was being facetious if I was claiming someone is "wrong" to rout for who they rout for. Most of us are trained/brainwashed young—nothing right or wrong about it (with an ounce of perspective), just is what it is. So lets be honest here, it isn't like UH's support in the city if significantly different from UT or AM. I bet the % of graduates (+children and grandchildren of) from those schools residing in Houston is not huge. Basically they are each sizable minorities, but UH hardly has a dominance on the fanbase--that is why UH wouldn't play UT in a big Houston area stadium during bleacher-gate, a stunning combination of incompetence and boneheaded moves executed by UH. On the point of Nebraska, it is interesting. Or you can bring up Ohio State University. Those whole states really behind their flagship institutions. Persons rally behind them whether they went to college or not. But in Texas, most of the other major schools/alum have bred hate for UT for years. Instead of taking pride in seeing Longhorn jerseys throughout the state, nation and beyond, and in recognizing some of the most universally recognizable symbols associated with the State (Hook em Horns, Longhorn Symbol), the hate overwhelms the positive image UT brings for many. The combination of Longhorn/UT success + traditions more focused on trying (but usually failing) to defeat us than promoting oneself has bread a lot of haters, no question. And personally, if you are kidding around to spew negative crap about UT, and VY, as he lead us to victory one of the most remarkable college football seasons and the most watched single college sports event in history, I am fine with that. But just admit it is based on brainwashing at age 3, 8, 18, etc. Play around with it, but don’t take it too seriously and don’t let it become true hate where it so cloud your perspective that you can’t see strait and get all bitter about it. A lot of the hateful stuff on VY here is just 1) over the line for what sports should be, or 2) under the pretense of being objective. It is like less hot girls hating other girls simply because the other is super hot--not a good human trait. Now Mr. Meowi is a good example of where the playfulness in dissing VY is obvious—that doesn’t bug me. But buffoons like All Hat and No Cattle need to be smacked around.
No, it isn't. Reliant wasn't finished at the time of the 2001 game, and the Astrodome was not an option.
Reliant wasn't an option, but it sounds like Rice U. or that the Astrodome definitely were. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/2001-09-18-houston-stadium.htm 09/18/2001 - Updated 09:44 PM ET Houston to dismantle unsafe seats By Jim Vertuno, The Associated Press AUSTIN, Texas — Temporary seating at the University of Houston's football stadium is unsafe and will be dismantled, school officials announced Tuesday, leaving about 4,000 Texas fans without seats for Saturday night's game. The move angered University of Texas officials, who said they had been repeatedly assured by Houston officials that the seats were safe. "I am in shock. I am appalled," Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds said. He said former Houston athletic director Chet Gladchuck assured him a month ago that university and state engineers had examined the temporary bleachers and they were fine. Gladchuck left Houston earlier this month to become athletic director at the U.S. Naval Academy. University of Houston President Arthur K. Smith made the decision to take down the bleachers after walking the site on Monday. Robertson Stadium holds about 32,000. Houston had added 4,150 temporary seats to meet Texas' request for 10,000 tickets. "After I inspected the structure yesterday and climbed to its very top row, I asked myself if I would feel comfortable sitting there with my wife and daughter and granddaughter. The answer was no," Smith said. "To me the safety and security of those attending the game are the paramount considerations. I deeply regret the inconvenience to those who expected to view the game in person," Smith said. Smith said professional engineers recommended modifications to shore up the stands for Saturday's game. He determined there wasn't enough time to ensure safety. University officials did not immediately return telephone messages left by The Associated Press. The school said ticketholders who lose their seats can watch the nationally televised game on a giant screen in the university's basketball arena. The university said it would refund the University of Texas athletic department for the lost seats. University of Texas officials had wanted the game moved to a much larger stadium, either at Rice University or the Astrodome. Houston officials wanted the game played at their on-campus facility. Dodds said officials at Rice and the Astrodome told him the game could still be moved to either location but that University of Houston officials refused again. "This whole situation in my mind is just absolutely out of whack," said Dodds, who added that the game contract called for 10,000 seats for Texas fans. "I am sick about it. We are very upset about this." Texas coach Mack Brown was equally disappointed that more Longhorns fans won't be in the stands. "We don't know who they are right now. We don't know if they're players' parents or our wives sitting in those 4,000 seats," Brown said. "To have 4,000 of them jerked away right now is just atrocious."
