I don't have to. I just looked for big name quarterbacks. Look at the stats of any QB in his first two seasons. They're not going to be good. If in 2 seasons, VY hasn't improved at all, then we can talk.
3 in the last 40 years...sweet and namath was not that great of a qb, hardly even very good. He was just a character.
Three for starters. This isn't important enough for me to peruse through every single QB over 40 years to check stats. Those were the first three names I chose and, wouldn't you know, they all had much weaker seasons in their first two years.
I'm not saying he had a great year. I'm agreeing with you that he didn't have a good year. Some of that is because of the OC. Most of it is because he's still learning the NFL and isn't good enough at his pre-snap reads, yet. However, his numbers (all except the TD-INT ratio and rushing yards) increased from year one to year two. Anyone who drafted VY knew he was going to be a 2-3 year project. Even Texans fans who wanted him knew it. Titans fans accepted it and figured it would be a 2-3 year rebuilding process. They still know that this was a rebuilding year. Luckily the defense was good enough to allow them to make the playoffs in a rebuilding year.
im just messing with you half...I like to give the overzealous VY fans a hard time. I'm a fan. he will be good. But he has not been very good that last 2 years and the amount of credit he gets for titan victories is vastly overrated. And sorry, but VY throwing INTs into the endzone, missing open men, misreading the defense and even dropped passes doesnt have anything to do with the OC.
Hard to get any offense to work when your QB is poor of a passer as VY. To me the offense looked like a reflection of Jeff Fishers conservative style. Chow might have been calling the plays, but you can be damn sure Fisher influenced the general direction of those plays. I don't blame Fisher either, if my QB threw just about twice as many int's as TD's, then I would have kept the game on the ground as much as I can. Superb defense with a ball control offense keeps games close so VY has a shot to win it at the end, which he is able to do. So at this point VY is a game manager, but what kind of game manager throws twice as many ints as tds? Thats because those who tend to criticize VY like to refer to the mysterious art of history. History has shown that when a QB can't throw in the pros, hes just not going to succeed, no matter his athletic ability. Its still a little early to declare him a complete bust, but if VY doesn't produce as a QB next year then hes going to be on a very hot seat. The Titans have too good of a defense, they're wasting valuable time trying to develop a type of QB that has not consistently succeeded in the Pros. I'll give him one more season at most, if he can't produce without the OC holding him back, then hes gone. But knowing Bud he'll fire the entire coaching staff before declaing Young a bust. PS Titans want to talk to Heimerdinger about O-coordinator job. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3199273 If he runs a similar offense to shanahan then it looks like your going to get your wish. More pressure on VY to succeed next year.
I saw quite a few games and his judgment and throwing skills certainly were not bad in my eyes for a young QB. I did not see A LOT of plays to be made out of that passing offense that were left on the field due to poor throwing or decision making. I did see some forces, but usually I saw them when his team was fairly desperate--he wasn't blowing leads or chucking games they would have won without his mistakes--and I can give you plenty of examples of young starting quarterbacks who have done that over the years in abundence (including Eli, though in 4 years + 4 playoff games later he may have finally found a rythum in the NFL). Overall I think VY looks as, or more, promising than most (not all) young QBs playing today. The only young guy (say less 27) I would take for VY and not blink (no 2nd thoughts at all at this point) is Ben Roethlisberger. This includes some other #1 overall picks--Alex Smith, Russell, Eli, etc. And before someone brings up Cutler or Campbell and simply relies on stats rather than considering their supporting cast around them I would ask you to look at their teams' performance with those guys before they took over (they were drafted by good teams), and what has happened in Campbell's case when he was injured. Now I won't argue with you if you want Cutler or Eli or Rivers over VY--but I have seen enough mixed decision making and mixed game leadership from them to not bet the house on them at this point.
