I'm so sick of the stereotype of Muslims wanting to come to America. Man, they always stereotype Muslims by showing things that normally wouldn't happen. Muslims are drunkards. Despicable stereotype. Bigots, the lot of them. Hmm, you had me till now, but I'm not sure if this qualifies as a stereotype. Russell Crowe an a-hole? I think you mean typecast.
Asian males get the short end in nearly everything except for kung fu movies. no pun intended Think about it. Entourage? Lloyd. Gran Torino? Thao and the gangster idiots. Coach Hines? Yamanashi!!!111 Oz? The two asians get killed off in like three episodes. etc. etc. etc. damn, i hate the media
I laughed so hard from the beginning to the very end of Crash (not the Cronenberg flick, which was oddly interesting). The contrived plots forced the key actions of the movie not real character flaws. The unintended double-stereotyping of the characters fed to further stereotype the characters rather than humanize their frailties. For example, near the end of the movie, a group of smuggled Asians were freed to roam in Chinatown. The 2 converted heroes, trying to make good, freed Cambodians in Chinatown, where, these Asians apparently belonged, LOL
The average American doesn't care about anything outside of America. People are comfortable with things they identify with or think they understand. Why would Hollywood go OUT of their way to dispell the stereotypes when they can make easy $$$ playing them up? I also cannot believe all the Asian guys complaining in this thread... cmon, let's be realistic.
I'm really tired of the stereotype that white guys can't be awesome ninjas. It's always some Asian dude stealing that role from deserving white dudes.
I haven't been complaining in this thread but why shouldn't Asians complain about wanting to see more and a wider representations of us in Hollywood pictures?
For every Jin and Sun there is, there's a Lloyd or Indiana Jones and the Asian kid. Would be nice to see Asians get more positive, kickass roles other then in kung fu movies.
And one more even though he is a cartoon character it still telling that Disney had an Asian kid in a major role that is ethnically neutral.
But that is an indication of progress that we are looked at as being people who can fill in all sorts of roles rather than being limited to stereotypical Asian roles.
Very recent progress. I just think Asian Americans are the group most likely to be portrayed as the submissive sidekick and the least likely to be portrayed as the dominant, Samuel L. Jackson or community leader type. Even now, in movies like the Departed, Asians are portrayed as outsiders. I wouldn't get on a soapbox over it, it just kinda pisses me off.
To me it's more like, while we are portrayed and accepted as people and not stereotypes in some TV shows/movies, in general portrayals of Asians are still unflattering. What about the Chinese dude in The Hangover?
