I conceptually agree. However, you seem to have this idea that tipping at restaurants is tied to performance in America. It isn't. Checking back into reality, it's a systemic problem and taking it out on your server is misguided, at best. You don't like the service, take it up with the manager, like you would in any other context outside the food service industry. Don't be a jerk and be the judge, the jury, and the executioner. If you don't like your service at the movie theater, how do you resolve bad service since tipping isn't an option.
Poor service is the trend not just as the customer face, but all throughout. I understand the reason and unfortunately going to the manager, or district manager is not going to fix the issue. Many of these businesses are just happy to have a body at the station so they can keep the business open. Also, service industry is dead. Few people enjoy working with the public. As we become more automated, there is less of a reason to continue the tip creep, both in frequency and size. Personally I am mitigating this by going out less and less. The industry will cannibalize itself.
Update I got a black stone grill. Life is easier and I think healthier, too. I enjoy cooking for family and friends now as well. Thanks for your thoughts.
Totally agree. However, most of what you said isn't the workers fault so I try not to take it out on them. But to be clear, you are NOT obligated to tip people that earn a full wage despite the insidious prompts to do so when it doesn't make any sense. Tipping is completely at your discretion. Aside: I also tip Uber drivers well. They are also captors to a crappy system with many crappy customers.
brah.......now they are taking the card at your table and look you in the face to see what you are going to select. 18, 20, 25, 30....... the only way to eliminate tipping is to eliminate it everywhere. select restaurants....places...aint going to work. workers will go there instead and now the restaurant who tried to change this culture just goes out of business. then the tip supporters will be like see! this is why we need to tip. things in america that aint changing anytime soon: tipping love for giant cars/trucks/suvs.
Meh...you're getting way too serious about this Tip if you want, however much you want, don't if you don't...just like it's always been
of course. I just do my typical tip math. i take 10% of pretax total....(round up or down to make doubling easier) .done. 138.35...? 14x2= 28 166
OK So now. . . . Tipping is in everything I went through a drive through and was asked if I wanted to tip Now the DoorDashers won't deliver without PRE-SERVICE Tips Someone said : Demanding Payment before service is not a tip . . its a bribe. (or extortion) Rocket River
