Here's my take: If you live in a hick town where Sonic is considered a place to go on the weekend, tipping is not only appropriate, it's warranted. If you're picking up lunch in the city, tipping is completely optional, much like the idiotic tip jar at Chipotle.
Don't be such cheap azzes..Yes, tip the Sonic bellhop...Now to go orders, it depends...if I do, it's 10% as there is work being done... Also, I'm iffy on places like Luby's or all you can eat...I mean, you have to get your own food right? what do they do, give you a straw and napkins?
I don't understand why anyone should feel like they have to tip sonic people. They are just doing what they are already getting paid to do. I never got a tip when I worked at Popeyes in high school and had to pack every single order made. To-go places like Chili's is the same exact concept as any other fast food places, I am still making the drive to get there and all they are doing is taking my money for the food that someone else in the back made. They don't deserve a tip in my opinion.
I've always wondered about buffets, I've always tipped just to be safe but never really understood what I was tipping for.
for buffets you should tip the waiter/waitress i know this since i've worked at a buffet before we live off you peoples tips
Ok on the Sonic thing, I usually just buy one slush which runs around 1.85 and sometimes half off during happy hour. How much should I be tipping or should I even be tipping?
Amen. And friends and family don't understand this. They just do it because that's the norm and that's dumb. Giving your money away because everyone else is doing it and for fear of looking like a cheapass is dumb. Your tip has NOTHING to do with your service because you've already been served by the time you get the check. It has no bearing on how the waiter/waitress will serve you. So if they serve me with crappy to adequete service, they get no tip. If they serve me with good to great service, they get a tip.
Black? I wish restaurants would just give their employees some real money (i don't mind paying more for my meal). I just hate feeling compelled to tip my waitress when the manger took my order and someone else's waiter filled my drink. Who the f should i tip?
So should you tip barristas as Starbucks? Or how about people at McDonald's? Or better example, how about Whataburger? Because they do bring your food out to you with a tray of salt/pepper/ketchup.
If I tell those mofos easy on the ice and they fill to the brim with ice, then I'm certainly not tipping...
I don't tip..... <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/zBFUDbOldMs&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/zBFUDbOldMs&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
On a recent road trip we stopped and ate at a couple of country eateries. One person, from the moment you walked in to the moment you leave, is all who is serving you. No question as to who should be tipped, and greatly I might add. On the same road trip we stopped at Applebee's (convenience from the hotel) and had about 4 different people waiting on us. Tip = not so great, avg.
For whatever reason i guess i look like someone who won't tip...so people give me crappy service. I used to leave them a really poor tip or even worse nothing but i realized that was just perpetuating the assumption they were already going by. Now i usually just leave a note or talk to the manager (depending on how bad the service was). If i'm with a group of older coworkers or something this rarely happens.
What about things like foot massage, haircuts, bell hops, and other non food related tipping? What's the standard policies for that?
Let everyone hear this, if you are flying and you use curbside. Tip the damn Skycap. Most skycaps are all old guys and they will tell you they accept tips.
