I tip my barber/stylist because my haircut only costs 5 dollars, which is pretty cheap compared to some places, especially the chains.

I usually tip 2-5 dollars and I try to give the starbucks associate some friendly encouragement or some sound advice. Usually something like how to make their foam frothier or hairstyles to accentuate the starbucks apron.

Wait I don't go to starflarks...

Yes, they serve regular coffee. And allthough expensive, it is not near as much as the fru fru drinks. About a 1.00 to 1.50.

I never tipped, and now that Mrs. JB has stated that she made well above minimum wage, its not happening for damn sure now. Absolutely ridiculous, if I didn't like the guys who work at the one I usually frequent, I might let them know about their little tip jar and where to place it. I can't believe that, I knew they made more than minimum wage, but $7.50 an hour in 1994 to pour some coffee or mix a drink in a blender and you want tips, please. I use to work at Circuit City loading people's heavy ass 36 inch T.V.s in their SUVs for a bit more than minimum wage and the only time I saw a tip was at Christmas.

We used to tip the beer lady at the Astrodome by our seats. I'd tip her $2 and she'd refill my cup for free. They get paid by how many cups they sell, so she actually made more money and I got more beer. Win win situation.

This is funny, somebody mentioned the Budweiser real men of genius commercials, one about the fancy coffee shop coffee pourer. In the commercial, the guys says "sure, you charge 5 bucks for a cup of coffee, but its putting out that tip jar that takes real guts."

Why is tipping a bartender acceptable, but not the person serving you coffee?

Because alcohol makes you drunk and more willing to spend money.

I'm not French, and I used to work for tips, but I'm on board for this. I hate trying to always figure out if and how much I should be tipping people to to their dang jobs. Seems like everybody's putting out tip jars nowadays.

RE: Starbucks... never did and never will. Same goes for any counter service.

Aw hell, I know I'm drawing an arbitrary line there. I have tipped bartenders before. doh! Where do you draw the line, dammit? Maybe we should tip bus drivers too?

Because, the bartender controls your alcohol quantity on mixed drinks, and your wait on getting a drink in the first place. I always tip bartenders more than anyone else in the food service industry.

Always tip the policeman who pulls you over...tell him "here's a little something for you and the boys...get yourself the fancy donuts"

And if you're in court, palm a twenty to the judge.

Ha! I think it's the person who comes up with those commercials that's the genius.

Well, if the bartender is a woman, she usually has to put up with some drunk, incoherant, slob like me giving her endless lame, tired pick up lines all night long.

The bartender is making money per hour, or a flat fee, that is going entirely toward taxes. The bartender makes what he or she gets tipped, nothing else.

This is, of course, after the bartender has to tip his barback 20-25%.

Starbucks employees, or anyone else running a cash register at a restaurant or something like that? They get paid hourly, that's where they make their money. When I give them 23 cents worth of change after getting coffee or a hot dog (from some other joint), I feel like I'm doing them a favor.

They don't live off their tips, but us bartenders do. That's our total salary, that dollar or more you should be giving us for making or serving your drink.

I worked at a pizza place a couple summers ago making close to ten bucks an hour, and I couldn't believe the tip jar that was out on the counter by the cash register. "Why is that out there?"

    Exact response:

"These idiots have no idea, you should see the money they throw in there, especially late."

By the end of the day, those "tips" (not reported, of course) were enough to pay for beer/dates/food/entertainment ... amazing.

Some people just have no idea how this stuff works. They stiff the waiter/waitresses or bartenders but don't mind throwing a buck or two in the styrofoam cup at the coffee shop or fast food joint.

It's absurd as having a $3.99 bill at Burger King, giving the kid a five, and saying "keep the change."

Vandals smeared 'soapy paste' on Starbucks
    Bay City News

One or more busy vandals spent today's early morning hours painting over the windows of Starbucks coffee shops and posting "For Lease'' and various other signs on the stores, according to San Francisco police.

As many as 17 Starbucks stores may have been targeted, according to Officer Mike Celis, who said the affected stores were mainly in the Financial District, the Tenderloin, and the South of Market areas.

No one seems quite sure when the vandalism occurred, but Celis said it was likely sometime after midnight.

The vandalism reportedly makes the stores appear to have gone out of business.

Christine Eden-Graves, an employee of the Starbucks at 390 Stockton St., said she arrived at work to find the store's windows painted with something white and adorned with a "For Lease'' sign. Other signs had been posted as well, she said, but those were confiscated by police.

She did not know what type of substance was used to paint the windows, but said it "looks like it's white glue.''

A spokesman for the Police Department's Tenderloin Station described the substance as more of "a soapy paste.''

Eden-Graves said the Stockton Street store will operate normally today in spite of the foggy windows.

No suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the vandalism.

    Normal tips

    Pizza guy - $2
    Barber - $3
    car wash - $2
    Sonic - $0
    Bartender - $1 for a guy and $2 for a women ;)

I usually tip when appropriate although I do agree it gets out of hand. I never know what to give a valet for giving me back my car
