    Wigman,

That is awesome, and it shows that you can get an amazing home theater experience for a reasonable price.

Baiter, I also love the clean look you have there, very nice.

I'm sure one of y'all can answer this for me. I have the Samsung 50in, 720p DLP. I have Directv, but do not have HD yet. In the meantime, if I use an S-Video cable, will that improve my picture quality over the current crappy RCA cable's I'm using?

slightly but not by much if s-vdeo and composite are you only options for your receiver/dvd player then go with s-video otherwise if possible go with component.

I was in Auckland in 1999. Man New Zealand rocks. I feasted on those feejules fruit. Of course I visited One Tree Hill (Famous U2 song) and yes... there was one tree there!

S-Video is definetly better than the RCA cables. Why dont you just call DirectTV and tell them that you want to switch to Time Warner cause for HD, I bet you they will cut you a deal to get you the HD receiver at no cost.

I already did that about 6 months ago for my DVR upgrade and now I'm under contract again. Wife wants me to wait, but actually hates satellite and wants to switch to cable so I might be switching anyways. :)
I guess in the meantime I'll give the S-Video a try.

well, then u can call time warner and tell them you are a directv customer and that you'll only switch if they give you the hd-dvr with free installation and 3-6 months of free hd premiums. i bet u they would do it.

that is a great price for that tv

only drawbacks i can see from the specs is that there seems to be only one hdmi port with everything going the way of hdmi i would think there would be two. i wish i had more on my tv and i have two... i believe the ps3 will probably use an hdmi for its blu-ray.

You can always just pick up an HDMI selector. 80$ at radio shack:

Has anybody noticed a real difference between HDMI and component video? I have my dvd hooked up using HDMi and my cable box using components, and while the DVD looks better, I think that's because the signal is coming through DVDs rather than a transmission filtered through a cable box.

    http://www.octavainc.com/HDMI switch 4port_toslink.htm

hmm something like this may be more useful for me since my audio receiver only has two optical inputs and right now i have three devices that use an optical for audio, xbox, dvd, sat receiver. i plan/hope to get a ps3 which will push me over the limit of my 2 hdmi ports (xbox is component, dont have a 360 though :( ) that way I dont ever have to switch my receiver. right now i have to use my dvd player through coax which i dont mind but i prefer optical because its better.

its just the price that kills me on it anyone know of something like this only cheaper?

the answer to that question is to get an a/v receiver with hdmi switching and control your components via the receiver.

also, it depends on your priorities, if you watch tons of movies, you should buy an upconvert dvd player and use that hdmi slot.
use the component for the xbox360 and hdtv. the quality is still excellent.

or if you go the ps3 route, watch your dvds/bluray on the ps3 via hdmi, and put the hdtv on component.

problem with the devices on there is that they only do the hdmi video and not a optical/digital coax audio option like the one i had in my earlier post. it would be nice to be able to just switch on the fly like that

it is in the back right on the same plug/connector in that your video cable comes out of, IIRC.
