I wouldn't be disappointed, but I think I'd rather have a first rounder plus Ben Sheets, then a few more wins this season, no first rounder and Ben Sheets.
I'm with you. Baseball is the very last sport where I'd root against my team in hopes of a better draft pick.
I was gonna post after they won 63 in the next couple days but I figured I'd put it out there before since I knew guys like you would be out there expecting me to duck. Like I said in the other thread, I was wrong, but anyone that is interesting in signing Ben Sheets and foregoing our first rounder......that's crazy. We should have tanked, we should have traded a bunch of these guys away for some considerable prospects and extra draft picks and we should have went ahead with a rebuild. Just my opinion though. Maybe we sign Ben Sheets and go to the Series next year. Somehow, I doubt it. I doubt we sign him. And if we do sign him, I doubt we still make it to the Series. Still need another pitcher after that......except we don't have our first rounder and both him and Oswalt are a year older.
No it isn't. Would you have traded Chris Burke for Ben Sheets? Of course you would. You do know that Burke was our #1 draft pick. First round draft picks miss WAY more often than not. I don't think we should trade away all of our draft picks, but in order to sign Sheets you have to forego ONE draft pick, you are a MORON to turn it down. Oh yeah...because I want a team that will tank it intentionally. Dumb, dumb comment. Pretty easy when you can sit at your keyboard and ignore no trade clauses and can assume that teams will just line up to give away their farm system for guys in their mid 30s. The level of genius just keeps coming. Maybe...maybe not. I personally believe that we would be in line for a playoff spot if you substitute Ben Sheets for any of the zillion of your beloved prospects that have manned our pitching staff this season. If we end the season 4 or 5 games out of a playoff spot, you really don't think Ben Sheets could have made the difference? Odd. If you can make the playoffs, it is all about who gets hot at the right time. Reference the number of wild card teams that have gone to the World Series.
Thank you. Baseball is very different from the NBA in this way. There is a big difference from just being a playoff caliber team and being a championship caliber team in the NBA. In MLB, that gap is hugely diminished. The Cardinals in 2006 are the best example of that. But even the Rockies winning the pennant last year helped demonstrate that. Baseball is a game where, more than most others, any team can win on any given day...the last place teams can beat the first place teams. So by the time you've eliminated the field and you're down to the top 8 teams left standing, that margin is even further diminished. The 1998 Astros were kick ass. On paper, that was a championship caliber squad. When you win 102 freaking games, that says enough. But they were only able to squeak out one win. The 2005 Astros were among the weaker hitting teams I've ever seen in the playoffs. They won the pennant. The point is, if you're fielding a competitive team...a team vying for the playoffs...than history shows you're fielding a potential champion. This is not the case in other sports, I acknowledge....but it is in baseball.
