i still have dsl but i'm going to switch to twc. dsl sux, and customer care sux even more. i just moved house, and it takes them two weeks to fianaly get the internet to work. after my contract runs out i'm goign to switch. Should i wait for comcast to move in before i get cable or should i just get it?
I got this one on sale for much less, like $20 less IIRC, and it is very decent for the money. But we had Comcast first up here... and the $50 / the 24 months I've had it... I've saved a dollar each month.. and just then, no more Comcast, hello RR... So whatever floats your boat. Just be sure to get the DI-524 wireless router too.
That's funny. My parents went the other way, from TWC to Vonage, for the exact same reasons. They don't get caller ID on the TV though. As far as service, while the people are nice, they have managed to screw up EVERY SINGLE thing we've asked them to do - number porting, transfer of service, installation, removal or addition of services, billing, etc. in the past 12 months.
I had TWC in Houston, now I have DSL in Austin. The only difference I've noticed is uploads are much faster with DSL, and it's cheaper. Downloads are about the same. I don't do any gaming so I don't know how different the latencies are.
I Wanted to contribute to this thread. I moved into a house, TWC took a couple of weeks to get out there to install. They took all day and then installed everything impropoerly. During the installation they turned off the cable for about half the street. Also the crew they sent out didn't speak English so communicating to them that things were not working right was hard to do. It ended up taking 4 visits from techs to get the installation done correctly. Even though it has been a few months, the cable is STILL not buried in the backyard. After having 10 appointments and it still not getting done, I have given up. Fast Forward to this week. I just bought a new LCD HDTV, so I go to the TW storefront and get a box. It should be simple, right? Well they said they were out and I should just make an appointment to get one delivered. Well, the guy comes and installs a used box. It is scratched up, beat up, etc. He says that is all he has and the others are in worse shape. So he installs it, it is working fine. About 2 hours later the thing turns off, doesn't come back on. So I return the box for a new one, same thing. It works for a couple of hours, then turns off. I call and they say they have a faulty set of boxes, so just keep returning them until I get on that works. So now I am a tester for TW? I never had any problems with TW until I moved and the installation from hell occured. Now it seems that I am going to have to play box roulette to get one that works.
Lost service Monday and got them to come out today and fix it. Turns out they accidentially disconnected me on Monday. 4 lost days of service; 1 hour at work I have to make up, since they f*cked up.
I went to a Cingular store today to try and sign up for DSL/Dishnetwork/Homephone... I tried, literally, for 2 hours to get my service done.. I knew exactly what I wanted.. I had it all picked out, every single service and the prices too.. it was fool proof.. I was just going to walk into the store, tell them what I wanted, and walk home with my service ready to be installed this weekend.. easy right? WRONG. The people at the store didnt believe me when i told them about the services I wanted, they didnt even KNOW they existed.. when they're being offered ON their website! then once I showed them online that the products existed.. they had to call their manager up to "check current prices" which of course were off. I got so frustrated I left and went to a time warner store. I paid 99 bucks up front and walked out with my HD-DVR box and cable modem in hand and my service package set up for saturday literally within 5 minutes. EASY AS PIE. Dear AT&T, take note of this.
When you pay your bill, contact them and demand that they discount it. You paid approx $15 for those four days. Let 'em know you're not gonna pay for service that they're not providing.
As what has happened in San Francisco, when Earthlink finally sets up their blanket wireless access points throughout the city, companies like Comcast/TW are gonna start dropping prices and increasing service.
Forget about wireless. U-verse is the new hotness. I'm just waiting for the letter in the mail to announce it's arrived in my neighborhood. Hasta la vista, Comcast crappiness.
its not just you I have two TW lines here, one Biz and one residential....the cable internet service is faster than the dsl we had at the other location, and has gone out once in the time I Have had it.(less than a day, not including the day of Rita) I had DIrect before TW, and it blew, no matter how well it was aimed, when it rained, it went out...and that is unacceptable for me since I must get all of the games. even the few time I have had to call anyone in support, it was pretty easy...tho since Im a tech, I know more than the people answering the phones. btw...>Mig is right, Earthlink is th eway to go with RR, you get it a few bucks cheaper. your experience is an anomaly check the rated speeds, standard DSL lines are slower in both uploads and downloads than standard level cable. latency is also an issue with DSL vs cable.
I had no problems with their Internet service for the 8 months or so I used it. Now their TV service on the other hand, BLOWS.
rarely have troubles with it. main thing I notice is the block around 59-72 are not as clear as they should be, but Im not sure if that isnt a problem with the outside connections since I replaced all the cable runs with HD-rated cables and splitters. and from time to time, the local HD alternates(KPRC,KTRK,KHOU) dont come in well, but that really doesnt matter to me since I dont watch them(just notice it on the way thru) Dont ever underestimate how important it is to NOT use old cabling for HD signals, it DOES make a difference. For example, after I replaced all the runs in my house with new cables, KNWS is actually pretty clear,,,no ghosting whatsoever....just check the vids I do on a KNWS broadcast(the celtic one wsa KNWS)...I use the exact same filtering I do on the FSN ones
Nah...they have problems all the time. Especially with ESPN. Signal starts to break up, and you see the picture/sound crackling. Usually the problem is with a particular channel (other channels come through just fine). I've seen it happen on a few other channels occasionally, but the most common culprit is ESPN. Plus their selection absolutely blows. First you have to pay extra money just to get ESPN. And then there's pretty much nothing else worth watching. I even pay extra for HBO and all I get is recycled movies for months and then one decent blockbuster every 3 months or so. I'm waiting for U-Verse. My friend just got his order in, they'll be installing this weekend. He's got like a bajillion HD channels, a DVR that has FOUR tuners (yes, you can record four channels at once) and his internet bandwidth is ridiculous - like 12mbps down or something. As soon as the VRAD is installed in my neighborhood, I'm on it like cheese. Screw this cable crap.
Oh and get this -- he gets ALL the FSN channels -- every single one of them from every single part of the country. Who needs league pass? He gets all the ESPN stuff - ESPNU, ESPN2HD, Deportes etc.
Just FYI, I called TW yesterday to tell them with all these price increases and more competition they would need to offer me a better rate if they want to keep me from going to AT&T or satellite... I talked to ONE person and they put me on hold for 2-3 minutes and when he came back on the the line he said they are dropping my rate $50.00 a month for a year! I have internet/phone/tv+all premium channels/3 HDDVRs/Alarm monitoring and I was paying $200.00 before tax and now it's $150.00 I'm happy with that and I think it's fair, but because it's TW I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this new price will actually show up on my next bill..
That's pretty cool. But yeah.. if you had switched to AT&T, god help you with actually setting up the service. Might as well hard wire your own death ray satellite up to your roof and hope for the best.
Very nice! For those complaining about TW cable, be glad you don't live in Kingwood because whatever service they use (Comcast?) is HORRIBLE compared to TW. Lame channel selection (no VH1 Classic, Encore, or NBA channel), constant outages, weak signal, and according to my girlfriend horrible "customer service".
Tradeoff is 20/30 minutes of my time versus the $15 payback. Thus I will wait until fiber optics (Verizon FiOS) is laid in my 'hood and then get payback.
