I think if this job was offered to Cleamons,Carisle,or Eddie Jordan, they would jump at the chance, but since guys like JVG and LB think they're the greatest coaches to never win a ring, then they're looking for negotiating power from other teams or think they're they ****! Thats the problem i have with this coaching search. Personally, i don't think it was enough competition for the job. It would have been nice to see the 3 guys i mentioned above, plus guys like Kareem,Bob McAdoo and even Lenny Wilkens interviewed for this job. After those interviews, then narrow the search down. The Rocket only really seriously interviewed LB,JVG,and MD as Silas wasn't or didn't feel he was going to get the job, thus taking Cleveland. As much buzz as it was about Rudy stepping down, it has been stemmed because of the lack of real competition for one of the most coveted jobs in the nba. Why wasn't young Nelson even approached? It goes back to my thread about vision. Its hard to imagine, but for once has anyone thought it might New Orleans? I know their owners are cheap, but they have had a hard time getting people to even interview for the position. If I'm a coach like Van Gundy who wants a team that can win now and still have a future, NO is a good place also. Baron and Mashburn are signed, Magloire is coming along and probably get signed, that not a bad place plus they don't have any bad contracts.
boy, Almu is excited. This is great. I love the way NYers and LA people overplay everything, not talking about your info, but you comments about a radio man. Just a sideline as we wait...just for ****nitz fun to pass the time. So, are you talking the most respecting *media* sports figure (that would not be a radio man) or are you talking the most respect overall in sports (that would not be a radio man, either). I love it when New Yorkers get all giddy and small-townish excited.
Partner, The man does radio now. He didn't before. You don't remember him on CBS all those years? He is also on television during football season on a national show called the NFL Now at 9am. Come on, Partner. I am sure you have cable and venture away from Bob Allen from time to time, don't you? And who has to overplay? Like Jeff Van Gundys rep, you can ask around yourself about this guy. Start here: www.google.com Type in his name. See what you get. Then read his bio above. Give him a call, Partner. Dial 1010220 and talk for 20 minutes for 99 cents. Ask him yourself. And I am not excited. I am nervous. I need to know who the coach is so I can see if its gonna be worth the 150 beans to pay for the NBA package this year. Whos gonna see Dunleavy and his greasy hair on the sideline? **By the way, I was born in Jefferson Davis Hospital in Htown. I am not a New Yorker...not much anyways. But I am glad to live in the *Greatest City in America. Or is that overplay also?
<i><b>Van Gundy, Wizards Discuss Coaching Job</b> By Steve Wyche Washington Post Staff Writer Friday, June 6, 2003; Page D04 SAN ANTONIO, June 5 -- Although he is weighing an offer to be the next coach of the Rockets, Jeff Van Gundy told reporters today in Houston that he interviewed with the Washington Wizards "for a good length of time" Wednesday about their vacant coaching and president of basketball operations positions. "<b>Yesterday I spoke to the Wizards for a good length of time</b>," said Van Gundy, a former New York Knicks coach who is now a broadcaster for TNT. "<b>We'll just wait and see how everything works out</b>." http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A21238-2003Jun5?language=printer
I don't know if Rick Carlisle is in the mix since the Rockets were stupid enough NOT to interview him. Absolutely idiotic not to interview a guy who was coach of the year one year ago.
Francesca is not the most respected anything. He has a NY following, and lots and lots of misstatements. He is a travesty, IMO. He can and does get lots of 'scoops', however. BTW - most listeners, maybe. Highest share of listeners? No way. I just hope JVG is playing his hand and gets the deal he wants right here in Houston and we can all move forward with a great choice!
hehe I know you are true blue Houstonian. but yeah, I think the "Greatest City in American" is overplay. Obviously, you've never been to Galesburg, Ill. hey, I'm a proud small towner who naively thinks he moved to Texas because it's the best country in the world. or is that overplay? I know Texas Stoke is with me on that.
correct that. I meant true *baby* blue Houstonian. man, I love Houston, but when you consider the baby blue Oilers, the sunrise stripes Astros and the pajamas....do we have the worst unis ever, when taken as a full body of work. and I still think the Texans logo looks like a longhorn bottle opener. does anyone else see that. <img src="http://sportsposterwarehouse.com/warehouse/texanslogo01sl-1.jpg">
oh yeah.. that's coz those two horns are too much bent.. lol.. you can open a heinken on those horns. lol good observation heypartner.
Partner, I am just messing with you. You know you my buddy. Still, I AM NERVOUS!! Can you blame me? We are like...LOST or something on all this. Why doesn't Les just say "Jeff, here is a check. Write it and lets get to work." Why did the other coaches find jobs right away? If Gundy is playing us, can't we tell or are we stupid? You heard what he said. Its hard for him to move from this area. When I moved here, it was hard for me also. But, you weigh the pros and cons and you get yourself something that motivates you (money, maybe?) and move. So, lets show him we want him. SHOW HIM THE MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!! I can't believe I spent my two week vacation sweating the Rockets. Do things EVER change?
read a story somewhere last week that JVG may just stay in TV another year and hold out for some openings next year, like LA
Let's put these rumors to a rest: Update: Les, Van Gundy met with Rockets attorney Michael Goldberg today to talk financial deal. -via front page Welcome, Jeff.
LTF, why do you think it's a done deal? I think the only real obstacle is money anyway. Not saying it's going to fall through; I just don't see why you're so confident. Chron has it as D.C. Nets would make more sense personally. I love D.C.; I'm headed to D.C. in a couple weeks, but I can't see Van Gundy going there unless he's too CHICKEN to take on a high-expectations position with the Rockets. If you're all about winning, there's no way you pick D.C. over Houston, unless again, you feel like it's just too hard to get to the Finals competing with the big boys in the West. And if it's about money, well, I can't say I would turn down a few extra million a year, but don't expect me to welcome you the one game next season you come with your Leastern team to the new arena.
