Thats a good point. And the kinda point that’s perfect to bring up. When I watch the teams play it feels different, but I haven’t watched Orlando play much so their offense system isn’t something I can comment on. Maybe another year and the offense is more creative and I’m overreacting. I dont think so though. But I’d be happy to be wrong Edit to add: When did I call any of our players failures here? I think Silas needs to be gone and we need a different coach. I think KPJ is being hampered by being allowed to play the way he does sometimes within iso and his PnR. I think our system isn't setting up our players for success. Never called any of them a failure?
it is far different from Harden and Luka style. They had the ball a lot more than our style. Green has the most of the ball now, but not over a 30 percent usage rate like Harden or Luka
Fair, i think its because no one on our team is Luka or Harden, so they basically take turns. Let's put this another way, we seem to have several players that would thrive in a heavy motion off ball movement offense. We don't run that. We have players that need others to set up their offense, we are the worst offensive assist team in the league. Things are gonna be different next year, either player wise or staff wise.
After a pick or handoff, if your guard cannot create an advantage or refuses to pass and take a contested shot with a couple defenders on him, doesn't it practically become an isolation play? We seriously lack secondary action, and that's why many of us think we are practically playing a lot of isos, though they might be initiated with a pick or some other action.
We lack in assist because we can’t shoot - Rockets often go 2-3 for 25+ from 3. That’s a talent issue because the shots are open for the most part .. We lack shooters. It’s why when we have a good shooting game the assist are there Last year ws sucked at rebounding … this season we kill teams in the boards (that’s a huge improvement for a young team) Less Turnovers and better shooting = more wins vs competitive losses
Now you want to what if .... You do know that it's been established that the Rockets are #4 in the NBA in quality of shot selection? You guys are barking up the wrong tree, the problem isn't the quality of shot or the action that created it, the problem is players themselves failing to cash in on these open looks. Just take Jalen Green for example - he's shooting .413 from the floor and .309 from three. This is a poor shooting team .... that's the problem. They are a bunch of 20 year old kids learning to play in the toughest league in the world and you guys blame everything but their inexperience for the result. There has been considerable improvement from just about every one of these kids too .... but some act like its not happening.
I understand the team is young and they are shooting poorly. But I can't just explain the bad shooting by inexperience and being bad shooters. What i see on court is 1) KPJ's and Green's shot quality are not good 2) the other guys cannot find a rhythm and that effects their shots When what I see on court does not match a stat like you mentioned(4th in quality of shot selection), I look at the definition of the stat, because quite a lot of times the stat does not measure what its name says, or there might be other reasonable explanations why the particular stat turns out like that. Assists do not measure playmaking, PER does not measure efficiency etc. There are many ways the stats can be misleading if you don't know in detail what it measures. I could not find the stat you mentioned(link would be appreciated) but if I remember correctly from a previous discussion, it measures how the team would shoot, if the shooter shot at league average from that position. If that is the case, that is a very limited stat, that does not take into account who take the shot, closest defender, how contested the shot is etc. (again, I am not sure that is the definition, just guessing). So it is not blindly refusing a fact. What I see on court does not match the stat you mention. So I want to understand whether my eye fails me or the stat measures something that does not reflect what we are discussing. Same with the isolation plays. What i see is a lot of plays where it is what i would call plays that are not created by someones help, even though it might be initiated through a pick initially. The stat may not count it as an iso play, it essentially is. Where most guards would pass to the open man, our guards do not and it becomes an isolation play from that point on. And the other thing is, if a player, is shooting poorly from certain spots, or certain type of shots, even if the shot quality is good, you can't just say the coach is okay and the blame is on the player. The coaches should develop that shot or at some point he should take less of it. So even something is a quality shot, you can't put all the blame on the player.
Far too sensible for the current state of extremism on this site. Stats are funny. They dont always tell us what we want them to tell us. Hey it seems like you were right about KPJ so kudos. Definitely didnt live up to my expectations. What can you do though? Just spit venom and shake fists even though the reality is nothing is going to change this year? Guys mad at Silas even though rational thought would lead you to the stark realization that he isnt going to be the coach to lead this team into the playoffs? Mad that Sengun the guy who is probably the most refined out of all these youngsters isnt "being developed" ?? Is Stone the problem? The guy who gave up good assets to put this team together and who seems content to take one more shot in the draft? Amazon Prime fans dont have the intestinal fortitude to plod through a rebuild. So many obvious recommendations that are are nothing more than chasing the wind.
If the Rockets wanted to compete this season they could have attached nets picks to Wall and broughtt back plenty to improve. They want a player to slot in next to Jabari/Green/Sengun/Eason/top7 pick. That is a crazy amount of talent in 3 years. You then have the draft right for an older team until 2027. Cap space as well. Next season will surprise a lot of people I bet. I’m hoping for vast improvement.
Needless to say, if you had 2 seasons of the worst record in the league, you are bound to have better seasons, that would be no surprise. IMO the surprise would be if one of them actually took the reins and act like a leader. Not the leader who shoves your teammates. Win games because you own the paint and not because you happen to make tons of 3s.
Actually, folks here seem to blame most of it on the coaching, a bit of blame for Stone. Meanwhile, those same folks seem to think that if we had better coaching, suddenly this is a playoff team. WTF? These guys ARE getting better. Its obvious. No props for those blamed. None.
an egomaniac...MVP suggested we play more tru sengun and he probably told silas to stop playing tru sengun altogether...this mess can not be ones man fault.... both him and silas should be fired!
While it is true that we suck at shooting, that's not the reason we lack in assists. You can look up "potential assists" which is any pass that leads directly to a shot (regardless of whether or not it goes in) and we are 28th out of 30 in the league. So it's not just that we suck at shooting. We are also 26th in "secondary assists" aka "hockey assists" which are usually a sign of good system/coaching, because it means guys are ready to make that second pass and they can react quickly and know where to get the ball. https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/passing?dir=D&sort=POTENTIAL_AST
We only have 3 true creators, until Tate comes back and or TyTy gets more minutes KPJ - even tho he’s shoot first Green Sengun We have a lot of players that once they get the ball, they are usually in position to shoot Tari Bari KMJ Matthews Garuda Fernando with the Rockets system of 3s and layups… we only have 2-3 players who will make the extra pass vs taking the 3 themselves Basically think we have Ariza and PJ Tucker on court … neither of them are creators and if PJ not in corner he’s not taking the 3
