Judging by one of his first comments about UH:
I'm not sure if he's applied or been accepted into any of these schools (even though admission into UH and A&M is automatic and he can wait if he wants).

I didn't read the whole thread, so it may have been said already.

if you want to goto (and pay for) med school, undergrad program really doesnt really matter. as long as you make your grades, score well on the mcat, and have all the extracirricular/experience stuff you'll be ok. rice is rididulously expensive and seeing as you got a free ride to UH - I would choose there so you want be in debt for the rest of your life.

Rice is your best bet dude.

Seriously, if you haven't already been accepted to Rice, this thread will be the biggest waste of space ever.

I know right, I didnt find out until February that I had got into Rice, actually it was on my 18th birthday back in 03.

To the original poster: just do whatever you think feels right, it is a big decision to make, just don't regret you choice. A lot of people would love to be in your situation. I visited Rice a few times and had fun but it just wasn't the right school for me so I decided to go to UT. Good luck with whatever choice you end up making.

no, I haven't been accepted to Rice, but here's my app:

GPA: 4.500 - not a single B on my transcript
    Class Rank- 22, top 10%
Courses- all AP's and PreAP's, very challenging
SAT-1870, the better score will come in in 15 days
Extra: National Honor Society, Robotics team Safety Captain, Math Club member, National Honor Roll member, AP Scholar recognition, participated in research project on grasshopper nervous system under UH and Baylor College of Medicine, where I wrote a scientific paper and it was published in a scientific journal...

I am just waiting to take my SAT Subject tests (required by Rice) then I will apply..

do you think they'll say no?

    maybe, maybe no... :D

that's not mentioning my essay, which is gonna be about the adversity that I faced when I came here to the United States in my Freshman year 3.5 years ago.

yep, I've lived in a foreign, non-English speaking country my whole life before I came hear in 04.. it was pretty fun learning English as a freshman in high school in regular classes (not ESL) where very nice mature freshmen didn't make fun of me at all for not knowing what a "crack head" is.. :D

UH guarantees me a full ride (based on my GPA, class rank, and SAT/ACT score), but I have to apply before January 1st (which I will)

A&M automatically accepts me whenever I apply (as long as it's before the February 2nd deadline), but no scholarship is guaranteed (it's very likely nonetheless, not a free ride, but at least 1/4th from what I hear)

my physics teacher told me to apply to Rice and see what they give me.. he said that if I'm accepted, there's a good chance that I will pay waaay less than 30k a year because of grants, financial aid, and such...

I was going to be nice, let this comment slide, and not respond in this thread

But after reading more, I have changed my mind

Your brain is not god's gift to the world. Your SAT score is average UT/A&M level at best, 95% of people at rice have higher, wow straight A's in high school you and thousands of other kids in Htown did that. You are like the vspan of high school students. You need a serious ego check before you get to the big leagues imo.

For all I know you might go on to cure cancer, but for right now you should not be thinking that you are too good for UT, UH, and A&M.

Just cause he hates UT & VY doesn't mean he thinks he's too smart for that school...

I don't go to UT but cheered for them like crazy in the Rose Bowl, and to some extent now I can't stand UT & VY just because of all the Young jocking that goes on around here...

Funny how that works sometimes... :)

    Rockets Mac;

I know you've limited your lists to three schools but I'm going to gie you the advice that I got when I was planning on going to college.

    Challenge yourself.

And that doesn't just mean academically but in life also. Its understandable that you want to stay near home and you don't want to pay a lot for school but your next few years will be truly formative and will not be like anything else in your life. While its nice to be close to home and friends that you went to school with its also important to go out and find out about what life is like in a whole new environment. With the cost of school these days I can understand your worries about tuition but what good will it do for your own development as a person if you go to a school that doesn't challenge you academically and intellectually. From what you said about your highschool background you sound like a really bright kid so rather than settle for something that is cheap why not go for a school that will demand the most out of you?

U of H and A & M aren't bad schools but in terms of faculty and the type of students they attract there is much better. While you might be able to take the same sort of classes at those schools as at Ivy League or any other top tier school the environment is going to be far different and in college you will learn as much, maybe even more, outside of class than you do in class. The experience of a great university is interacting with the wide range of people that it attracts and at a top tier school that will be the most well known names in their fields teaching classes and the best and brightest students from around the country and the world.

Rice certainly qualifies as a top tier school how much of a challenge will that be if if you are still near your home and the friends you have known?

Like you when I was a senior in highschool I could've gone to UH for not just free the package they offered they would've paid me to go there. I also could've gone to to UT for free but my instead my mom encouraged me to apply to Cal and I got in even though that meant much more money, living a thousand miles away in a state that I hadn't been in since I was one, and a school that none of my friends from highschool were going to. Its true that it was tough for awhile and as a freshman I even thought about transferring to Rice or UT but i'm glad I didn't. In spite of being far from home and the student loans going to Cal was one of the best things that ever happened to me.

So before you decide that these three schools are the only choice for you take some time and consider a broader view. Whatever school you end up going to good luck and have a great time. To be honest I envy you as there are a lot of times I wish I could go back to being a freshman at college and while you might not realize it until years later how valuable going to college is, and I'm not just talking about what sort of degree or job you can get.

well I'm also a senior getting ready to make the plunge into college, although I plan to go into business (go longhorns!), but looking at those scores and stuff, I personally wouldn't rely on getting into Rice, its so unbelievable competitive. maybe its just because i go to clear lake where we have 27 national merit scholars this year alone...but I have a bunch of extracurriculars and am applying to rice, but i just don't see myself getting in, so I'd personally say that going to UH is your best option since undergrad doesn't really even matter in the first place.
