If you have a chance to go to Rice, you gotta go there. I would definitely choose Rice if I could get into it. I'll prolly end up at CU Boulder :D

    Here's some important advice:

If where you went to college is still important two years after you graduated....you probably aren't doing so well. If you are still riding on your college name after your first job, you need to improve more as an individual.

So much of school is the life AT school and learning to be away from home and make decisions on your own.

So out of the choices you gave I would say A&M.....

But the full ride at U of H is a big deal, if you can't get that at A&M, I would probably take the scholarship.

But going to UH will not give you the out of town college experience, which IMO is outstanding.

For Reference: I turned down a computer science scholarship to Rice (won the State programming contest) to study sports broadcasting and pay my way to SWTSU....now Texas State.

    The reason? GIRLS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Why? Because where you go to school is mostly irrelevant unless you are going to Med School or Law School etc...post grad....

Your life, go where you want, but HAVE FUN ....it is the last time that summer means something other than it is hotter when you go to work.

Employers don't really care WHERE you went to college for your undergraduate degree...even if its the only degree you have. They only want to know that you have a degree. Go to UH, the less debt you have, the better off you will be.

When I worked for the Chemistry department there, they used to quote that Lamar has the highest acceptance rate to Baylor Med School among all undergraduate schools including Baylor.

Man, I'd go to whatever school offered me a free ride. Actually, that's exactly what I did. I point and laugh at all my friends still paying off their college loans. But at least their football team(s) were good... LOL.

i posted quite a bit on your last tread. i was the one pushing HCC :D

    no joke, i got a 35 on my mcat (13 = Phys, 12 = Bio, 10 = verb). HCC BABY!!!

but it seems like youve narrowed your chioces down to 3 schools since then...

yes, the education level is different at each of those schools--BUT, the textbooks are the same. you can go to UH and learn just as much as the students attending Rice or A&M. it all depends on how much time you will invest.

you seem a little unsurre of yourself. you say youre all about studying but then youre nervous about attending rice bc everyone there is a nerd....

seems like you still need to work out the order of your criteria youre using to pick a school...

rice and baylor have a linked medical program..meaning you can apply to it and get into rice and baylor med at the same time coming from HS..thus going into Rice would increase your chance of getting into baylor.. however baylor is prolly the most competitive med school in texas..along with UT-southwestern. I had a friend who went to UH...got a 3.6 and a 30 mcat..and couldnt get into med school the first time around...(im assuming its cuz hes from UH).. he did get in the 2nd attempt tho. and im willing to bet money that if he had those numbers from Rice it'd be a different story. if ur dead set on med...go to Rice..the other med schools recognize that school also..not only baylor...Those that say undergrad doesnt really matter have obviously never applied to med school..

As a graduating high school senior with plans to go to medical school, the decision would be easy: UH. You can save up money for medical school tuition. I attended UT, but the faculty at UH is at least comparable to Rice's.

As someone who knows friends who attended / graduated from Rice and other top MBA programs outside TX, the decision would be easy: UH. Rice is ONLY prestigious in its own mind. Few schools / employers outside TX know about Rice. Rice is a small school with limited social outlets and declining resources. The "quality education" is questionable (according to my Rice friends). Rice is certainly not worth the price tag.

Jeez...what does UH do, hand out full scholarships to every top 10% student? That makes me sick...I'm a junior transfer paying full price, and it's kind of disheartening to know that I could've gotten a free ride had I chose UH from the get-go. I LIKE UH more than Baylor anyways, the professors here may not be as open and friendly, but they're damn good and they know their stuff. I wish I could rewind my life to May '05 and plan to go to UH the fall of that year.

    Blechh. Go to UH.

    No brainer - RICE!

    Best education.
Chance for a Teir I selection to a med school.
    National recognition.
    Write your own ticket.

I dont care how much it costs, the education at Rice will pay for itself in the long run. End of story.

if you are going med school, your undergrad doesnt mean that much really. You're going to get enough debt during those years..you dont want to add onto that if you dont have to.

Don't even concern yourself with the prestige factor, it doesn't mean squat in the end, so long as you make the best and perform well.

Just do with what feels right...don't think and try to figure it "all" out so much.

personally, free education, free board...hard to go wrong with that. If you work you may be one of the few non-broke college students. :)

Damn, I'm sure glad I graduated high school 28 years ago....

If I was graduating high school today, I would barely be able to get into McDonald's burger flipping school.

You know how I can tell you are forever going to be a loser in life. You make decisions on places, people, and things without truly experiencing them.

I know you are only 18 but you need to learn to have an open mind to things you are unfamiliar with.

Just looking at how you based your pros and cons on Rice, TAMU and UT I can tell you are a douche bag who doesn't deserve to go to any of them. They are all better off without you.

To the thread starter - I don't even understand why you are asking this question. In looking at your original post, you all but declare that you want to go to A&M. So just go ahead and go there and quit acting like you are considering UH and Rice because it is apparent you aren't.

I've heard about Rice and that it has a good reputation and I'm in Britain. Not that it means much in this thread, but thought I would mention it!

Rice is definitely not better than UT and probably AM in engineering and maybe some other subjects. There are so many more people who recruit from UT for these programs. I think it depends on what program you are going into whether Rice is better or not.
