You always put things in perspective. I don't expect to beat OU every game, but 3 in a row is painful.

Honestly, the game was over when we kneeled it at halftime. You could feel it.

UT is one of the top 5 jobs you can get in college football. I think ND is the only job that is better, and it can be argued that Texas is as good a job.

Top ten finishes are fine. But, if we're gonna be ranked #2, let's play that way.

The last game I remember where we looked crisp was CU1 and Texas Tech last year.

We look like a poorly coached team. Noone can tell me that we don't have talent. Look at some of our players. As stated earlier, quite a few pro teams would trade skill position players with UT.

mduke, Young does provide a dimension that Simms didn't and he played in a more competitive football district. So, save your snide remarks.

You're going to take away about 80 percent of his material if you put those kinds of limitations on him.

I can agree with that. So, you'd be okay with a coaching change?

I'd be okay with it -- I certainly don't advocate it. I think Mack Brown has earned some time with the way he's turned the program around. But I'm still disappointed with the coaching thus far. I just want UT football to be fun, and right now it's really not. Even our wins -- I've been to all the home games for the last 5 or 6 years, and UNT and Houston this year were just two of the most boring games I've ever seen. OSU was boring too except for the fact that the score was close. We play really conservatively, don't let our playmakers make plays, play not-to-lose, etc.

I wish we'd just go get a young, creative offensive mind to be OC.

The ones suggesting firing Mack are tired of inability to lead the team in big games. A part of that lies with his coordinators. I don't want to go through OC's like RC, but obviously Davis has not gotten the job done. Some blame Davis, some blame Simms. Bottom line it's Mack's decision.

Mack will not be fired. One, we would have to buy out his multi year multi million dollar contract, and two, we would lose his recruiting prowess. Another reason Mack will not be fired is 60,000 season tickets sold and all suites at DKR TMS sold out for several years. Mack brings a lot of attention to the program...ABC, ESPN, etc.

Mack raised the bar himself by recruiting # 1 classes. We have talent. We have resources. We can't win a big game. Last year's loss in the Big 12 title game was an embarrassment. Redemption meant winning the Big 12 this year. The loss put us at the mercy of OU (OU will not lose 2 games).

Another reason for the high expectations in Austin is our rival in Norman. Bob Stoops in less time with less talent already has 1 national title and 1 conference title...more than Mack Brown in 17 seasons. Stoops now holds a 3-1 advantage over Mack, and has a 63-14 ass kicking in his records. Gary Barnett, a guy UT was interested in, already has 1 conference title. Hell, even RC Slocum has a conference title. The only guy who doesn't have a title is Bill Snyder.

Mack has shown improvement in his 4 years. His job won't be in jeopardy until he loses 4-5 games. A 3 loss season would be a disappointment, but he isn't going anywhere. When people say when will Texas win a big game, I ask them "Did UNC win a big game?"...I believe Mack's UNC team choked to Mackovic's UT team in the Sun Bowl.

I don't want a recruiter as head coach if the coordinators he delegates power to are incompetent.

And Simms failed miserably against that same team in a game that meant more. In big games Simms is more emotionally fragile than Crispin Glover on a meth binge. He doesn't just fail to execute, he completely unravels.

Do you think another coach like Mike Bellotti would not have turned around the program?

UT made a good hire in Mack, and I don't think his recruiting success or people skills can be duplicated, but any coach opposite of Mackovic could have turned the program around.

Can you please stop posting what I'm thinking? ;) We are a boring team to watch. I think a team like Marshall is more exciting.

Smokey, I think anyone with a decent disposition (not Macovic) can recruit Texas. Texas will always be on tv because they're Texas and they play in a great conference. You or I could recruit in texas, though maybe not at Mack's level. Also, even with his #1 recruiting classes, it's still subjective. I don't think there is enough of a talent gap in the top 20 teams to where a great coach can beat a decent one even if he has inferior talent.

Major is right. Mack does deserve more time. But, I wouldn't mind if some pro team hired him.

What a man like Stoops could do with the Texas players. Scary.

    Exactly.

After a 4-7 year, could UT have been any worse?

I think if you bring in Bellotti, UT is still going to recruit their fair share of hosses.

Bellotti has a claim to being the best coach in the nation.

Funny thing is Mack would use his influence to get us to hire Greg Davis.

After Mack left Tulane, as outgoing AD, he convinced them to hire Greg Davis as head coach. Davis set the Tulane program back about 10 years, and when he was fired, he packed up and sewed himself to Mack's behind. He's been with Mack ever since.

Why did we only score 20pts vs NC State? Twenty frickin' points. That was one of NC State's best defensive performances of the year.

What about the O-Line and the inability to pick up blitzing linebackers? Bill Snyder out coached Greg Davis, and we never made adjustments.

And then against Stanford? Why did the Stanford offense ever get the ball back? We had the ball, and we could've and should've run the clock out. Two straight dives right into the teeth of the Stanford defense, and then asking Major to try and get ten yards in the teeth of a horrendous blitz. He did not, we punted, and the rest is history.

Blame Simms all you want, but that ignores the fundamental problem with our offense, the same fundamental problem we've always had.

We have uncreative playcalling, always have.

We telegraph our plays, always have.

We don't trust our athletes, any of them, to make plays, except versus vastly inferior opponents, or when we need a desperate comeback, and we never have trusted them.

Simms did not have a good game, he made two very bad throws that robbed BJ Johnson of a pair of touchdowns. He threw behind recievers a couple of times.

But that doesn't change the fact that the playcalling was atrocious, just like its always been. We asked our QB to perform in near impossible conditions - with telegraphed plays, and a complete fear to throw the ball over the middle for farther than 8 yards.

The Cat I don't know how you can seriously still defend Chris Simms. It's obvious to everyone except you and Mack Brown that Simms is not a good quarterback. I've been telling you that for two years now.

That reminds me, who in the heck wrote that article recently projecting Simms as THE #1 pick in this year's draft? Oooops...

Now, wait a second. You don't put up the kind of numbers Simms did last year unless you're a good quarterback. We're talking specifically about his play in big games. In games against UNC and A&M (2000) and Colorado (regular season), he's looked fairly good.

It's asinine to say he's "not a good quarterback". I think it's accurate to say he folds in big games for a variety of reasons, many of which are his fault.

Um, no one? I don't ever remember a writer touting Simms as the No. 1 overall pick.

I don't think that Simms personally performed that poorly on Saturday. I think that UT could have opened the offense up a LOT more.

BTW, it was the announcers during the game who said Simms may be a #1 pick.

No, not really. It's obvious to those who have always hated him and want to make him the scapegoat perhaps. I'm really not sure how Saturday's performance would affect his draft status. He didn't really play well or poorly.

He really only had one bad throw the entire game, which was the slant that Strait read. Of course, Shanahan quit on the route too, but nevertheless Simms never looked off it. The pick in the first quarter was the same as a punt; it was taking a big chance downfield, and it just didn't work. It's amazing how UT fans were begging for us to do that all season (acknowledging the risk of a pick) and when they finally do it the blame goes to Simms. In the third quarter, it was just bad luck. He hit BJ in the hands, it wasn't caught, and it got popped up.

He also had a couple of brilliant throws, including the one to Roy in the first quarter, and several again dropped by his receivers. Truthfully, he didn't make enough plays to win, but that's kind of hard when your primary receivers rarely run beyond 10 yards.

I really, really hope Simms gets out of this region when he's drafted. A pathetic offense scores 35 points, a below average running back rushes for 248 yards, and most plays aren't run beyond 10 yards, and people are looking at him like he's the one that lost the game. He didn't win it either, but very few quarterbacks do against that kind of a defense.

    Guys,

Simms is a decent QB, but he just simply does not have "IT" the intangibles needed to rally a team to his cause.

He does not RISE to the occasion and more often then not SHRINKS under pressure.

Simms is a one dimensional player, and until the Longhorns get him out of there and get a player that can do more then just throw the ball when he is perfectly still, they will constantly lose the big games.

I think V. Young will be the guy, he is another Michael Vick type player and it will open up SOOOOOO much with his scrambling ability.

Simms is simply a decent QB, who has a bad habit of choking in the big games.

Zero TDs and Fifteen Int.'s against top 10 opponents says a LOT about his play.

Can you name me a QB that has "it" whose receivers aren't running routes beyond 10 yards? Of course Vincent Young will be better for the offense-- he has the ability to throw like Chris, but the ability to run as well. The importance of that is more magnified in an offense where passing is very difficult. It doesn't mean anything bad for Chris; Vincent is just a more talented player.

If you'd read my post earlier in this thread, which clearly explained the 0-14 number, you'd partially understand it. TD-INT ratio is about the most worthless number in football unless you know the reasoning behind them... it's like win-loss record for a pitcher in baseball.

    Cat,

Excuses, excuses....and most of them wrong.

Roy Williams ran a few fly patterns and on that last Simms Interception, he had someone running ALL ALONE down the left sideline....he never looked.

Simms is a product of hype, he does not get it done, and will be a BUST at the next level too.

He simply has ZERO intangibles, the guy can only throw when he is perfectly still, if anyone lays the EDGE OF A PINKY on him, he goes down.

Simms is the most overated QB I have ever watched.

He is a nice guy, but he is not a leader of a football team.

    Clearly !

    DaDakota
