I'm as shocked as anyone about the current state of the Texans. Though I have not given up on this season and I believe we can still achieve our playoff aspirations, it couldn't hurt to begin looking at coaching candidates. Kubiak isn't a bad coach, he's just cursed. If the Texans don't go 6-0 the rest of the way there is a 99.9% chance Kubiak will be canned. That's a major uphill battle considering our schedule. Bob Stoops, University of Oklahoma, (125-31) 80.1% "Big Game Bob" is a tremendous and fiery coach who gets the most out of his players and wins football games. He's a tremendous scheme guy who always has his team ready to play. He doesn't make many bonehead calls. The one drawback to Stoops is that this would be his first shot at coaching in the NFL. Stoops is a defense first guy who likes having a dominant line that can wreck havoc in the backfield. Bob relies heavily on his OC for scheme, practically reinventing his offenses every time a new OC takes over. He's a gamble hire but he just might be worth it. Mike Leach, Texas Tech University, (84-43) 66.1% Former Texas Tech Head Coach and offensive mastermind. With the rise of the spread offense around the NFL, it makes perfect sense why NFL teams would covet Mike Leach. If not as a head coach then possibly an OC. Leach is very outspoken and does command the respect of his players. The downside to a Leach hire would be the necessity to invest heavily on a proven defensive counterpart. I don't see Mike as an NFL Head Coach but rather, an OC. Bill Cowher, Pittsburgh Steelers, (149-90-1) 62.3% This guy is number 1 on any teams coaching wish list. Intense and revered as a no nonsense coach who brings a ton of fire and passion to every game and practice. Google a pic of Bill Cowher and I guarantee you will get the "Cowher Scowl". A defensive minded coach who isn't afraid to get in the grill of any of his players or call them out for bad play. Bill Cowher is always tied to rumors of joining so and so team and nothing ever materializes. He's taken a number of interviews but doesn't take the jobs he's offered. Some could wonder if his heart is in coaching anymore. "Chin", however, is a championship caliber coach who commands the respect of everyone. Hiring him won't be cheap, but, rest assured, you're getting a winner. Jon Gruden, Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (95-81) 54.0% "Chucky" is a fierce and personable coach who exudes confidence and a deep understanding of the game of football. He is known to be an excellent game and player manager. Gruden is a good balanced coach who gets the best out of his players on both sides of the ball though, he is regarded as more of an offensive coach. Jon is a coach capable of getting even the lowliest of teams into the playoffs. Kyle Shanahan Young and talented OC, who has been learning and calling plays for Mike Shanahan and Gary Kubiak for a few years now. Has a great mind for offensive football but might not be as good on the defensive side. Despite his youth, he commands the respect of his players but comes off as being too much of a friend and not a boss yet. That type of respect will come in time. He's going to get his shot at a Head coaching position in the near future but, it may be too soon to expect him to take the reins just yet. Kevin Sumlin, University of Houston, (23-15) 60.5% This is no “Rooney Rule” interview. Kevin Sumlin is a legitimate coaching candidate. He is, hands down, one of the better coaches in college football. Sumlin is a guy that will be on many coaching wish lists at the collegiate level when the season ends. His offensive prowess and penchant for getting something out of every player 3rd string and up have him strategically positioned as a man with options. University of Houston is in position to make their 6th straight bowl appearance. The last 3, of which, have been lead by Coach Sumlin. For those who wince at hiring a UH coach..Jack Pardee was no slouch. Other Candidates Jim Harbaugh Ray Rhodes Todd Bowles Les Miles Kirk Ferentz Chris Peterson Tony Dungy
Leech is too unstable to be a HC, but I would love to see what he could do with an NFL offense as an OC. How often does the college to NFL HC move work, especially lately?
Exactly. Kyle Shanahan?!?!?!? McNair is either going to hire an established former coach, or keep Kubiak. If he doesn't hire an established coach with a defensive background, he wil need to find a DC with some hx of success. Those are the candidates we should be discussing. Not Kyle Shanahan.
Rodney Harrison: "Somebody on the defensive side of the ball in Houston needs to be fired." When Rodney "The r****d" Harrison can see it, you know you've got a problem.
The rest of your post was completely invalidated by this bit of r****dedness. Did you experience the Pardee years with the Oilers? Were you too young? It's like saying "for those who wince at drafting a UH QB in the first round..David Klingler was no slouch."
If Marvin Lewis gets fired, I wouldn't mind seeing him be DC. Or if we can't get him, how about his DC in Cincinnati, Mike Zimmer?
I don't know why I get the sense that Kubiak will not be fired after this season and he'll get another chance after this year.
http://nfltraderumors.co/2010/09/24/bill-cowher-ready-to-coach-in-2011/ ----------------------------------- Having a Hall of Fame WR and one of the best RB's in the league I think should make the Texans a top option if McNair would shell out some cash. Too bad he has to pay Kubiak the next two years but he did that to himself.
I would like to see Kubiak act like this after the way the Texans played the last two weeks. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/SWmQbk5h86w?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/SWmQbk5h86w?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> This crap that Kubiak is saying that the Texans players should be proud of themselves for not quiting. Screw that. Get angry and show some emotion.
Enough of these small-time coaches. The Texans need a proven big time coach who is respected around the league and can get the most out of the players. Cowher/Gruden Maybe Holmgren 0.o?
I think the goal needs to be a proven coach. Right now, we all *think* Kubiak sucks, but we really don't know how much is a coaching problem and how much is a talent/player problem. If you get a new unproven coach, you're kind of in that same boat. If you get a proven smart coach, you take that out of the equation. You know you're not losing because of stupid playcalling or game management. The more you narrow the potential problems, the easier it becomes to fix.
How about Parcells? A couple of parcells drafts would be sweet! If they dont get an established coach they might as well blow the whole thing up trade Andre for picks etc...But I thnk somebody with an attractive resume is going to be interested...
