I'm not trying to pick a fight, but it's still a bit ambiguous. Do you view everyone speaking out against Hardaway's statements as being 'highly superficial political correctness' or are there just certain people who may have gone overboard on the issue. You seem to be surprised that some people have condemned his statements.
I threw out a number. Would it be better for me to say I think a lot of people are homophobic? I said there are degrees to homophobia. IMO there are a lot of people who "don't have a problem with gays," but would if it personally effected them.
I think (biologically) women are different. No, that's not because I think lesbians are cool. I don't think women check each other out. Men do check out women. I assume gay men check out men. So I can understand why some guys would feel uncomfortable knowing another guy was looking at their things not with disgust but a hmm that's a 7.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/20...bkn.hardawayremarks.ap/index.html?eref=si_nba hes sorry again, and i was right, he doesnt "hate" or so he sais
Oh come on. Of course he says that now, after he's been blacklisted from the league and his damn name got taken off his own car wash. I'd buy that he just misspoke and didn't mean "hate" if he hadn't said in a follow-up interview that he would avoid any contact with a gay family member. Even Dick Cheney loves his gay daughter, and he shoots his friends in the heart.
Plenty of people hate gay people, or they would say, they "disapprove" of their lifestyle which is just a euphemism for hate. Why would anyone disapprove unless they feel threatned or uncomfortable - the seeds of bigotry and closed-mindedness. But you know what, it's ok to hate and that's people's right. If people didn't hate gays, gays wouldn't have to stay "in the closet". Instead they could live in society freely. But they can't, because of the many people who hate them. Look at this thread alone. The ignorance and fear is eye-opening. Anyway, Timmy made a mistake of speaking what should not be said. HE was politically incorrect. And if you do that, the moral righteous will denounce you and exile you. Because you have just marked yourself as toxic. For those of you who agree with Timmy, well - that's your right. And you can do that because you're nothing in the media world. No one cares what you think. But you're not any different from him.
this was a point i made before this went into the d & d. the only guys who feel "threatened" by gays are ones who fear that they might be able somehow, to be turned gay, which means that somewhere deep down inside you there are some gay tendencies that are being forcefully repressed.
I don't know about that argument. I think it's more similar to hating any kind of group. Fear is usually not based in reality but irrational emotions. They aren't fearful of their own sexuality. They are fearful of their reality being false and seeing gays empowered. It's more like a bully syndrome then anything else. I know - when I was a teenager I made tons of anti-gay remarks as jokes and as a way to put down people I dis-like. It wasn't because I was gay, it was because it was empowering and going along with the group and the social values of middle America I felt comfortable and assimilated. Thanksfully I reached a level of maturity in early adulthood to realize how wrong I was and while I do not find it appealing to me, I can accept those who do and see that they are people - often very intelligent and benevolent ones who have no desire to harm others but just want to live happy lives in peace. Hating gays, or "disapproving" of them, is nothing new. People hate all types of people for various differences. A gay-hater is no different then a racist or mysogynist.
After the way he went on and on in the initial interview, Hardaway's "I didn't mean it like that" retraction goes down as one of the worst efforts at spin of all time. Evan
Very untrue. Many homosexuals are born gay, much like we are born straight. They are simply not attracted to the opposite sex in the same manner that we're not attracted to people of the same sex. There isn't much choice in the matter. They are just wired like that from birth. There are a handful of people who like to experiment, but they're not innately gay--they're just like the adolescent dolfins in heat. Likewise, a small population of many animals are born gay. They're simply born that way.
Here's my take: I don't have any problem with gay people as long as they are open, or even in hiding about it. The problem I have, and why I think a lot of people still "hate" gay people are because there is a large group of them that will dress up as women and try to get with heterosexual men. There really isn't an excuse for those people, IMO.
I haven't been avoiding an answer -- it's just that I wanted to see whether certain sanctimonious posters would remember how they often referred to Amaechi as "manboobs." Now that he has donned the cloak of the sacred cow, no one remembers that at all.
What do his eating habits have to do with his sexual orientation? Manboobs are not exclusive to straights or gays, just fat people.
This may be your perception ... and it has some merit ... but, if you do some archive searches, I'll wager you will find jocular references not related to diet. With that, I will exit this thread. BTW, I have no problem with anyone's choice of sexuality -- but I do like to remind the holier than thou set that they aren't.
