If the Magic players with expired contracts are not renounced, then they should count against the cap until they are: 1. resigned 2. renounced 3, sign with another team They should count against the cap at a higher percentage than their previous contract, depending on their situation. Realistically, I like Mango's side. Cato and a future #1 for Fizer would be fine with me. Even better would be Cato, Drew and a future second rounder. Cato would carry a lot of weight with Jerry Krause. He needs a center of repute right now! There may even be some argument that Cato and another (Drew,KT) would get it done without any other draft picks involved. They need a stay-at-home Point Guard, and most of us here really undervalue Drew's worth. The real proof of a viable trade involving Cato will be done on two levels. One, the summer practice and roster workouts. If Collier can carry even half the defensive load (and you know he can play the offensive game) over cato, there may be speculation that we can unload Cato with hurting too much. The other thing, number two, is the level of play that everyone as a whole, gives the team at the start of the season. The call will be, not can we do without Cato, but more like can we afford NOT to trade him for some really big holes. That's my take anyway. My dream would be: 1. Hakeem goes gang busters and plays solid defense/offense for his 24 minutes every game. He is capable of it, especially now that his game has been defined, and he has a whole lot of pride in showing he goes out in a flourish this final year. 2. That Collier plays even close to what his strengths are. That he translates his college game into a pro-set that picks up where he left off last year. 3. That the "Four Horsemen" in the backfield carry that bond and confidence into a new season and cause sheer havoc with opponents. Every game. 4. That the watch word for the new season is where they will fit in the playoffs, not when they get to the playoffs. 5. That Walt consistency with the rock will not matter, because we would have included him in a trdae with someone that gives us that consistency. Mango - with Taylor and Rose going to Detroit, I think they would be going on the way up, least a little bit. Rose adequately fills the hole of Hill and Taylor would give them some much needed low post scoring. Then they still have Cleaves and Stackhouse. All they would need after that is a passable center. ------------------ No signature for you!
Would any team be interested in Hawk? If Houston would be doing Chicago a favor by taking Hawk, why would a good draft pick have to go to Chicago? Chicago scenario: Cato Brand Jermaine T Thomas Artest T-Mac a steady pg with an outside shot (Drew?) Cato + Drew = Fizer + Hawk (provided Hawk or Walt is traded) Actually Artest is redundant in that situation and Chicago could move him on. Mango ------------------ Eat more spinach! Crisco-And defense. Rose has very little, Taylor has none, Stackhouse has very little, and Cleaves isn't a stud defender. Mango-No one wants Hawkins. He's their Walt Williams, except worse. That's why I think the 1st round pick could be lowered to a future first rounder, or a conditional. And we could even keep Hawk as a mentor type for Cuttino/Francis. He's a free agent after the season. Also, throw out O'Neal, unless they trade Crawford to get him. ------------------ The more lefties on your team, the better. Collier is Seven Foot and Left Handed. But Detroit wasnt a good defensive team to start with. Even with Hill. Didnt Chicago draft like 3 or 4 pgs? Why would they be interested in Drew? Where would he get all those minutes everyone thinks he needs to become good? ------------------ No signature for you!
Chicago drafted: 1. Jamal Crawford (some say he's an SG) 2. Khalid El-Amin 3. AJ Guyton (more of an SG too) ------------------ The more lefties on your team, the better. Collier is Seven Foot and Left Handed. How can you go wrong? Trade or bench Kenny Thomas.
well thas wierd. Isnt Drew more of a sg too? If he went there, that would be one strabge guard mix to go to battle with. ------------------ No signature for you!
You guys are missing the obvious question, how can the Rockets get involved with this Hill/Duncan sign 'n trades (Assuming of course both are nice enough to let their teams get something in return). Since the Pistons and Spurs will want at least SOMETHING in return, and Magic have just about nothing, this is a great time to swoop in and work our magic. We can unload guys like Walt and Drew all for picks or players in their last year in Det/SA/Orl. Essentially set us up for next year. Alrite I'm thinking too much like Nike here, ... ------------------ Now that it seems everyone thinks Rockets blew their picks, you can start reading TDS' 2001 Draft Previews... Draftsource.net
that sounds good too, isn't dreamcasting fun? We get our big time low post scorer (Fizer), drop Walt, drop Cato, get a tough rebounder (J. Williams), all the while putting ourselves in better position for 01 free agency. ------------------ The more lefties on your team, the better. Collier is Seven Foot and Left Handed. As I said, I am no capologist, and I could be wrong, but simply put ......... The Spurs and Pistons would lose $9Million in Duncan and Hill in a respective sign and trade. The Orlando Magic can absorb that $9Million each. The Spurs and Pistons get a partial Trade Exemption. Say Orlando sends each team a pick and a player for a total of $3Million each. That's a player, a pick, and a $6 Million exemption. The Spurs start shopping. The Pistons start shopping. ------------------ "Those Rockets are driving you crazy,Dad!" ........ "Ya, I know. I have a feeling that DUncan will stay. I think he should stay, its being disrespectful to the city of san antonio if he leaves. THey did so much for him. ------------------ "I talked about what degenerates they [Mets fans] were, and they proved me right. okay, what exactly has SA sone for Duncan other than surround him with geezers and ride his back to the championship? oilee - I know Drew has value, I just think it would be strange for Chicago to draft all those pgs and bring in Drew. AND they still have Maloney dont they? Seems like Drew would go better with a team that needs a pg, like Toronto, or soon-to-be Jackson-less Indiana. I like some of NIKE's dreamcasting. ------------------ No signature for you!
I'm not sure on San Antonio's team salary information, but all they'd get is a trade exception, meaning they'd have to do a sign and trade to get a free agent. I do know Detroit is very near the cap with Hill, and would be that 9 million without him. Remember, the pick doesn't count for anything capwise. The other problem, is I don't think Orlando has anymore 3 million dollar players. All they have left is Armstrong, Garrity, Doleac, and Harpring (did I miss anyone) and there can't be a "double sign and trade" (sending one of their free agents as that player in the same deal for Duncan). ------------------ The more lefties on your team, the better. I agree. That essentially is what drove him to this point. I will state again, that in my opinion, and a lot of others opinions, the Spurs are the one of the leagues worst longterm planning franchises. They have no focus to their year to year gameplan. Nope they don't have Maloney. He is cut lose. The pick-up on his waived contract last year, was for one year only. I of course agree that Drew would be a move that was way down the option list for Chicago, but Krause has to manage dollars and he does that well. If he can fill a need and a hole by moving a draftee, he will look at suitable replacements. And Drew is a suitable replacement for ANY TEAM looking for the fundamental guard that I described above. I totally agree. But watch Toronto go after a premium PG instead of a Drew-type. Tim Hardaway may be suitable but he is so injury prone .... and therefore a "no go". They do not want an aging or injured PG like Tim. Eisley would be an ideal FA pickup. Or a sign and trade with a Christie-Kevin Willis-etc... move would be feasible. (Personally I doubt Sloan pulls the trigger on a sign and trade, they don't like that type of commerce in Utah.) One of the new drafted guards is not unreasonable. Again Krause has Jamal Crawford ..... Who would he choose? To get Tmac or keep Jamal? Jamal was expensive. McGrady is the real deal. Tough decision. If McGrady goes, watch the Raptors also concentrate on a new power forward. The PF of choice for them is Fizer. MoreChicago and Toronto dickering to go. I would love to be a fly on the wall during these talks! Indiana's options may fall to Avery Johnson, especially since NY wanted Avery this past year and didn't get him, and it appears that Knick slot was filled by Mark Jackson in a one year contract. So Indiana may try AJ. But keep in mind that Zeke stresses fundamentals and the mention of Indiana and their need for a PG brings Drew to mind because of that more than anything else. ------------------ "Those Rockets are driving you crazy,Dad!" ........ so pere-[attempt of humor]Ya think maybe Zeke will want more fundamentals, and less flash, and do a trade of Bryce Drew and Kenny Thomas for Jonathan Bender and Al Harrington?[/attempt of humor] All kidding aside, Detroit and Chicago should be two of the bigger movers and shakers this offseason. ------------------ The more lefties on your team, the better. I agree. Especially with Chicago so full of it. Literally and figuratively. LOL They both may make some massive strides, though. The Hill departure will not hurt Detroit as much as Duncan leving San Antonio. And Chicago did alright at the draft for two years running. Should be interesting. ------------------ "Those Rockets are driving you crazy,Dad!" ........ "Ya, I know. Ain't it great!"
I just read Grant Hill will visit the Knicks next week. The Orlando thing is not a done deal. The Knicks, of course, would have to do a sign and trade with the Pistons in order to get him. Rumors are a Camby-Thomas for Hill and Vaught. Also the Knicks are looking to deal Spreewell. He would be a great fit in place of Wiz, IMHO. ------------------
Grant might have already set up a visit with the Knicks before he went to Orlando. Either he'll go or call it off. He and Tim have to go through the motions so that no one can say with absolute certainty that this was all decided months ago. I think his best-est situation is Orlando; and all signs point in that direction. Househunting with your wife is a big sign. Duncan? I think he might be torn by loyalty, sort of the good-guy syndrome. But he should bolt, and quickly. That team has no discernible future, except to use him to make sure the voted-for new arena gets built. A sidenote: I guess in August we'll be reading those NBA 2000-01 magazines rating each team, still using old rosters. I wish they would print those things in September or October. Question: Can we get Bo Outlaw if we "give" the 4.5 mil exception and our Orlando pick to the Magic? If they actually add Duncan and Hill, maybe they can trade Mercer and Miller to Charlotte for Eddie Jones using the exception. (If this can be done, Charlotte would be getting decent value). That would be a scary team. Maybe maybe maybe. All speculation. ------------------
True, the Knicks thing was set up before the Orlando visit, so, it could be called off. Orlando is looking to deal Mercer, so your speculation isn't that far fetched. ------------------
