No, they're overblowing it (freaking CNBC?) because he was the prototypical mainstream black athlete.
I think 2) and 3) main reason is because its tiger.. i don't think people care the 'hoe' was white. i think they care because the 'wife' is an amazingly beautiful blonde white woman.
Tiger's obviously black in terms of his racial makeup (he's also white, chinese, thai, etc.) and his upbringing/experiences have definitely been influenced by that fact. Tiger, Obama, members of my family, people at your job, whoever, if you have black features your race will be be an issue at some point in your life. Whether its showing up at a golf course when you're a teenager and people automatically assuming you are a caddy, or having to deal with people who want to discredit your worthiness as a candidate because they assume you are an "affirmative action" concession, or worse of all when people have consciously lowered the bar for you (even with good-intentions in mind) because they think you cannot be successful without it. That is part of the black experience in America. Black people are constantly being reminded of our race, whether its for good or for bad. Its just what it is. I agree that race adds an element to the story, but the story would be huge nonetheless. Its like pouring a cup of salt into a freshwater lake an pretending like its an ocean, there's not enough of a racial element here to change the nature of the story. Huge star, pristine image, hot wife, cheating with 1... 2... no 3... no 10+ women. * The way the story built upon itself really gave the media something sustainable to talk about. I agree that Tiger could best get through this by airing out all of the dirty laundry so that there's nothing to speculate on and talk about. *This is the point where I realized just how stupid famous Tiger Woods really is. I was going to replace him with the biggest celebrity to show how big a deal it would be for them too, but I couldn't think of anyone more well-known. I cant think of anyone I could show a picture of Tiger Woods to who wouldn't know who he was. wow
I have heard several black people claim Tiger is black because he has a black father and ignores his asian heritage. When it comes to a poor asian/black people, they don't want anything to do with them. It seems more about celebrity status than race. There are many black asian mixed people abandoned in Vietnam and other asian countries, but their black relatives don't claim them. I don't hear black celebrities making an uproar about black people in Asia and bringing them to America, even though intense racism is an even bigger obstacle in Asia than the USA. They are forgotten by their black families. It would be a different story, if they were celebrities. Even when they do come to america, they aren't accepted. http://www.mtholyoke.edu/~thantran/Amerasian.html http://www.nytimes.com/1992/11/16/nyregion/for-afro-amerasians-tangled-emotions.html
I hit submit too early on the last post. I wanted to balance it out at the end to show that some black/asian mixes are accepted. It was a happy story for some black/asians that immigrated to the Bronx.
