I don't think anyone has called Tiger Woods "Unforgivable Blackness."

Jack Johnson was a different time plus his personality was very different than Tiger Woods. Jack Johnson had an outsized personality and directly challenged the racial boundaries against him. Tiger Woods has generally tried to be non-threatening off of the golf courses and not take on the racial issues of the day. The amount of coverage that Tiger Woods is receiving I don't see as a hi-tech lynching of an uppity negro, to quote another famous black man, but a feeding frenzy over a salacious story involving one of the most famous athletes who has cultivated a clean cut image.

Word leaks that Tiger may have been cheating on Elin (Nov 24) - no one really cares or talks about it

Word hits the Wire that Tiger involved in car accident (Nov 27) - everyone wants to know if Tiger's okay

Additional details (1 car, 2:44 am, leaving house) leak (Nov 27) - everyone starts wondering what exactly went on, drinking vs spat debate begins

Tiger no comments all over the place (Nov 28) - everyone convinced something worth talking about has gone down, Tiger has sealed his fate

It's seriously that simple. Tiger comes out and says he mixed alcohol and Ambian, and it doesn't get anywhere near this crazy. No where near.

LOL, you're kidding right? Race will always be a issue. One Black President isn't going to change everything. I think the fact that we actually have a black president ignited even more racism from racist folks. The day when people don't "see race" any more, is the day we have world peace.

I don't know but if the entire country got blow jobs, it'd be a much better place.

I disagree about their being a significant black-man/white-woman taboo going here, but I do agree that this story would get less play if Tiger was doing black women. I think some of the salaciousness of the story is from subconscious jealousy people (men and women) can feel for Tiger getting to sleep with all of these women -- but white people will be less likely to covet that life sleeping with black women. In the hierarchy of coveted women, attractive white women are perceived to be at the top, with black women seen as more attainable. People might think there was a limit to Tiger's power if he wasn't operating in the top echelon of hoes. So, I think the whiteness helps the story along by helping people identify with the characters. (Aside, if Tiger were white and all the women were black, the story would take on a much different complexion -- Tiger would have some sort of fetish. But, reversed, we don't think it is a fetish. Of course, it is no accident that Tiger is hooking up with only white women.)

I wonder how much rep MoonDogg has on posts of pics alone.

Oh, and this has little to do with race. Part of the reason is that no one really thinks of Tiger as a black man except black people.

EDIT: Yes, that line from JV was so hilarious I had to put it in my sig immediately.

It's the snowball effect. The story breaks, people get interested, the media sells more papers and gets more hits; since it's selling papers the media stays on it so they can have a new headline everyday; the story becomes THE forefront of news, and people think it's the biggest story since Krakatoa.

It's the way the way the 24 hour news cycle works. But, the bigger the celebrity the bigger the schadenfreude. There are several more scandalous incidents of NBA players actually fathering children with multiple mistresses but it's not the guy who set himself up as the model of dedication; or was set up by his father to be the model of .... something.

"Tiger will do more than any other man in history to change the course of humanity. … He is the Chosen One. He'll have the power to impact nations. Not people. Nations."—Earl Woods, Tiger's father

"Tiger has Thai, African, Chinese, American Indian, and European blood. He can hold everyone together. He is the Universal Child."—Kultida Woods, Tiger's mother

Thanks Mom and Dad, no pressure.

It's not uncommon for white people not to think of famous black people as black. Oprah, Jordan, Tiger, Cosby, etc. They escape their blackness in a way in this country when they become famous enough. Archie Bunker doesn't like black people but he loves him some Sammy Davis, Jr.

    Tiger is not black.

And if you haven't been watching his country club, Stanford, Asian best friend, arranged date, Swede marrying life, let me just point out that Tiger is the whitest man alive.

What black man ends every conversation with "You got it, buddy".

I know what you're talking about but that's not what I meant when I said they don't think of him as black. People really don't think of him as a black person as in they don't see him as that color, he himself doesn't. The Oprah's of the world have just reached such an iconic status that they don't get billed as an "urban" entertainer. People know her as a black woman, just one they love as much or more as any white talk show host.

not saying your theory is wrong, but this just goes too far off into the psychoanalytical deep end for me!

i just dont see how race has anything to do w/ the attention this story is getting - of course, there are going to be some for whom race is an issue, but w/ a story like this its like a flashlight in a solar flareup.

tiger just got named athlete of the decade - he is the biggest sports icon since michael jordan - he had a squeaky-clean, family-man, dedicated & disciplined, clean-cut image - that is what he marketed himself as and he made hundreds of millions off that image. its not like this was dennis rodman or marbury.

so when it all comes crashing down in the manner that it did and you are one of the 5-10 most famous people on the planet this is the kind of media attention that i think is expected. and really, its not as bad as the michael jackson coverage over the summer was - imo, it could be alot worse.

wasnt barkley married to a white woman - and he cheated on her w/ a white woman(s) - it got attention, but not like tiger - reason being is that barkley is one, not as famous as tiger and two, has a history of getting into trouble off-court, which tiger never had.

kobe had a similar image too before the denver incident - no tattoos/family man/good guy - it all came crashing down, but he redeemed himself by his on-court play.

i always chuckle when the king of the hill where the neighbor khan calls tiger woods 'the greatest asian golfer of all time' comes on.

also, tiger could blunt alot of the media attention/speculation if he came out asap and did one press conference or interview (oprah!) - there is so much drama/mystery around the story - car crash/critically injured/unconscious on street/wife knocks out back window w/ golf club - that initial episode and then the total silence from tiger has fueled the media frenzy.

it would be a painful thing to do, but he could end all the speculation and get infront of the story somewhat. going to have to do it at somepoint so he might as well rip off that proverbial bandaid now.

not that i'm on the bandwagon of this being about but to be fair the original story didn't get a chance to blow up before the car accident

that being said, this story blew up after tiger's accident and you can't ignore that that being the driving element of the suspicion.

however, to me the one racial element maybe that elin is white and tiger is black, the other women's races don't matter, other than the fact that tiger doesn't seem to associate with any non white women. even his mother is asian, he doesn't like asian women at least?

Do people really view Tiger as black? I'm guessing black people view him that way?

I never have, and neither does he.

I think african american people are more concerned with race than anyone else is these days.

Race has nothing to do with it, Tiger is the most famous athlete in the world, Elin is freaking smoking hot, if it was Halle Berry, same thing would be happening.....

The day when people can drop race as an issue will be a happy day for the world.

    so profound as usaual

anyway, the fact that you think african americans are more concerned about race means you're concerned about race

it would be nice if african americans could drop race as a subject but since their history has been affected by their race more than any group in this country means that its going to take some time

if tiger woods was standing on some street corner and no one knew who he was I would venture a guess as to how you would view him
